  1. I don't remember my first silver (probably a Mercury dime though), but my first real numismatic/collectible thing was this $20 note from the Republic of Texas. I think it cost me $25 in US dollars, 40 years ago or so.
  2. When I have had something like this happen, I have been accidentally pressing the volume control on my headset.
  3. The sun looks like a black hole, at least to me. It just looks completely wrong and impossible. The brightness of everything is just broken. It is hard to explain until you see it yourself.
  4. Mecca will also get about 5 min 10 sec of totality in 2027, to add another religious site.
  5. No, it depends on exactly how close the moon and sun are, which vary in complicated ways. It never gets close to an hour but it does vary a lot. About 3-4 minutes is pretty typical.
  6. Sydney will get a total eclipse for about 3 minutes 50 seconds, at about 2 pm.
  7. Sorry about your luck. If you don't get a good look at totality, you miss the good part. A total eclipse is like nothing else you have ever seen. That includes any pictures you have seen before, which just don't capture how unreal it looks. All the leadup where the sun turns crescent, things get dark, is cool but not unreal like the eclipsed sun.
  8. I think these are called solar prominences? I saw an orange dot and did not realize what it was until you posted these photos. Thanks! I'm not sure why they are red/orange though.
  9. That eclipse will not be longer than 5 min 15 seconds anywhere. A little bit longer than this one. That doesn't mean you should miss it though!
  10. Do you mean the Confederation Bridge, in Canada between Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick? That is a long one, and the one time I drove it was during a hurricane, albeit much weakened by the time it got up there, but still windy enough that trucks were not allowed on it at the time.
  11. I'd forgotten how alluring the letter Y can be...
  12. Yeah, if visibility is really bad, why isn't that a good idea? Especially if slowing down well below the official speed limit as it has become so hard to see.
  13. Distrito Federal, aka Mexico City, or the semi-state that most of the city is part of. (Kind of like DC in a way.)
  14. He said nomination, so Democrat/Republican leaning doesn't matter. There is still no chance though, primaries are winner-takes-most enough that no other R candidate is going to win any state where Trump is on the ballot. If they did this in half the states Trump would still win the R nomination, as other candidates will split the rest of the votes.
  15. They call it Peruna I think. Unfortunately I know that.
  16. Texas has a subpar record of winning Big 12 championships in football, so that is what matters.
  17. This is a totally different research group and 'superconducting' material, btw. These people who got their work into Nature (until it got yanked now) also claimed high temperature superconductors, but they had to do this at extremely high pressures, like between the faces of two diamonds pushed together at the maximum possible force. It would still be a big advance but it would be a long way from the normal conditions that LK-99 was supposed to work in. There was already talk about their results being questionable and having papers retracted, before the new guys claimed the LK-99 stuff that would work at normal room conditions that made much more news. So two independent sketchy high temperature superconductor claims.
  18. I would be surprised if this is even possible, other than the obvious way of asking the current website owners for the data. I would think that all the accessible records of the traffic are on the hosts which the current owners have. Of course the ISP's have records that could be found but not without a court order or being NSA. I'm sure plenty of people pretend that they have this data but my guess is that they make up/'estimate' most of it. I have never tried though, curious what is actually possible.
  19. The Disney posts were half-coherent. Mainly it took the cruise ship to make him coherent. (I think he may have done IT for a cruise line, before working at Disney as a half-retired gig, IIRC.)
  20. Except when the subject was cruise ships running aground. In that case Phlegm's posts were completely coherent.
