  1. The idea of a tuned mass damper is that it DOES reduce the amplitude of the sway. The bottom part of the graph (m12,k2,c2) is the TMD...when it moves, it effectively dampens out the motion of the mass m1. Here's a good video showing the principle. The smaller orange mass vibrates at a frequency that cause the frequency of the larger mass (the structure) to damp out and stop swaying.
  2. Wait...what's SUPPOSED to fall off??
  3. My son in law is from Polson, MT at the south end of Flathead Lake. I've never been but the pics I've seen from my daughter are amazing...
  4. So, you think that if J&J has to pay out a lot more than $2 billion that there won't be layoffs? And layoffs from the rank and file that had NOTHING to do with anything involved in this case? Maybe that's true. But, generally when companies have a lot of extra expenses, they have to find ways to cut costs elsewhere. And many times that's with RIFs... I have ZERO problem if people that lied and hid information are punished. And I DO understand that some punishment HAS to come from the corporation. But, I also realize the corporation is made up of a lot of people that don't deserve punishment.
  5. Feeling sympathy for employees of J&J that may lose their jobs despite having nothing to do with wrong doing != Feeling sympathy for J&J the corporation
  6. I NEVER said anything like that. A corporation that does bad things SHOULD face punishment and the people in the corporation that were deliberately party to those bad things should ALSO face punishment. But, should Bob the janitor, Alice the Office Admin, Elizabeth the IT tech, Juan the midlevel Engineer, etc lose their jobs and retirement funds/pensions because of it?
  7. I understand the concept of liquidating companies...But, I've always thought it ended up punishing a lot of people that don't deserve it - all those employees that lose their jobs/pensions/etc during the liquidation. The VAST majority did nothing wrong. They just went to work every day to earn a living and hopefully be able to retire. Liquidating the company eliminates that for a large amount of them.
  8. Haha...fair enough. Nah, when I did this, both my GF and I got the SWA Visas and got CPs. The thought was that she and I would go on mine if we took a trip with just us, but then we could take couple friends on other trips - so, me and one friend and her with the other friend. Didn't really look into the rules beforehand. My bad. So, now my GF and I are looking at several trips this year with just us, but then taking a few trips with one couple and some more with another. If I have to switch back and forth for each trip it would make it difficult to actually do the plan.
  9. Question about Companion Pass on SWA since I've never had one.... I've seen that you can pick a Companion and then change them up to 3 times. But, could I set Companion 1, then book trips in April, June, and October, then set Companion 2 and book trips in May, July, and November? Basically, I would be switching companions between trips without going through the process to switch it multiple times...
  10. That's awesome! PM me the Apache pilot's name and I'll see if my guys knew him. Apparently, it was a pretty close knit community.
  11. This is SO true! I've worked with LOTS of helo pilots. Nick Lappos (Lead engineer for the S-92, he's in wikipedia) was AWESOME. The stories he told were badass. He had over 900 combat missions in Vietnam. He made the comment that he'd fired around 1 million rounds during his flights. And the test pilots I worked with had badass stories, too. Some were of combat, others were about training but holy shit they were funny as shit. I work with several Apache pilots now and they have some quite interesting stories of Iraq and Afghanistan...
  12. IMG_0587.mov Apparently I can't drag and drop from my MacBook photo app into here. Again...turn down the volume. This makes loud helicopter noises.
  13. Yes. Here's a video from when I was doing FTE work. NOTE: Turn down your volume.
  14. It appears all 3 carry 12 pax. Both are good designs. I'd almost like both to win. But, still biased towards the V-280.
  15. It's cool. Just pointing out that it's still in the competition phase now. Again, I admit to my bias for the V-280. The V-280 is smaller than the V-22 and the V-22 has no problem with LZs for the Marines so I assume that won't be an isse. I don't know if they have a wing fold version (see below) of the V-280 right now since the primary customer is the Army so they don't need to be on boats as of now. The Defiant is cool, with the contra-rotating rotors and pusher prop, but it can't achieve the speed of the V-280 (the 280 is there in the name for a reason). Helicopters always have that big issue with the reversed flow on the retreating blade and approaching shock waves on the advancing blades. The tilt rotors don't have this issue. I assume the Defiant slows the rotation of blades at higher speeds to help with this issue though. I doubt the Defiant is any more complicated than the V-280. Tomato Tomahto BTW, it's hard to believe that the V-22 is "40 year old tech" now.
  16. Well...they haven't won it yet. It's still between them and the Bell V-280. I'm a little biased towards the V-280, though...
  17. Yes. Losing a rotor would be VERY bad. You'd lose anti torque AND half the lift - but only on part of the aircraft. So, you'd either pitch up or down and start spinning... Yeah...hard to believe that the only thing holding the entire rotor on the aircraft is that one nut... And since we're talking about them, here's some cool videos of one:
