  1. Explain exactly why? And please don't CR your answer...I self banned myself from that shithole and I'd like to know your answer. BTW, when you get to the truly rich in the country, income equality is not really the term you should use with them.
  2. I pointed out that I don't even NEED a cell phone for work. Most people really don't NEED it for work. It's an AWESOME convenience, though. House phone bills tend to be cheaper. But, tying this to the topic of the thread, I don't think that the poverty situation in the US will be a driver. Compared to POOR countries, as someone above pointed out, our poor people are the 1%. The poor have a LOT more to lose by our country collapsing than the rich do. But, then, I've seen dumber things happen in the US...we had the TV show Tiger King for god's sake...
  3. I disagree it's a necessity. I have one. And yes, I have my work email and Teams/Slack loaded on it for communication with work. But, I do that for convenience, nothing more. If I didn't have my cell phone it would not hamper work in any way shape or form. And 90% of my phone use (and probably most people's) is just fucking off - surfing the net, games, memes, etc. People have just gotten so used to the ubiquitousness of cell phones that they confuse convenience with necessity. Now, I'm sure that there ARE numerous jobs that the cell phone is a requirement. But, I'm doubting that those ~12% of households with food insecurity are in the majority of those. BTW, the cell phone is just one example of the misplaced priorities of many Americans.
  4. I didn't try to refute a gap. I pointed out that we in the US have different priorities. (and I was referring to that specific example, not all examples) As a couple posters above commented, it's viewed in the US that having a cellphone is a necessity. I don't think that it really is, even if its utility is very helpful like in the examples they gave. Especially when that utility is valued over food for the family.
  5. Part of the issue in the US is that we often have misplaced priorities. For instance, approximately 97% of Americans have a cell phone (https://www.pewresearch.org/internet/fact-sheet/mobile/). Which means that the majority of those families suffering from food insecurity were making sure that they had their cell phone bill paid. So, a non-necessity was more important to them than a necessity. NOTE: I'm not saying there aren't poor people in the US and that there aren't problems. Just pointing out one of the issues that we have here.
  6. I was listening to an Intelligence Squared debate on the issue. One of the people arguing against the wealth tax leaned left, but pointed out that implementing a wealth tax has been done numerous times with the results never achieving the stated goals and ultimately those countries repealed those taxes. She said it was a very inefficient way to redistribute wealth... I think it was this one: https://intelligencesquaredus.org/debates/its-time-redistribute-wealth Also, income/wealth inequality isn't necessarily bad all by itself although it CAN be bad. But, just remember that the easiest way to eliminate income/wealth inequality is to have a bad recession/depression.
  7. Yodelodelayheehoo! Und...Und... Und Beck's? UND BECK'S!
  8. I'll have to admit I'm really jealous. I lived in Germany from 1969-1973 and only have a few memories of my times there. I've told my GF that I'm making 2 trips back there when I retire. One in the summer and one in the winter (not over Christmas Day, though - we'll be in the Caribbean). The winter trip is expressly to go to the Christmas markets and Der Schwarzwald. As a side note, apparently, when I was about 3, I went to East Berlin with my folks. We were in West Berlin and apparently my dad knew someone that had a car with diplomatic plates and we got to go on a tour of the soviet side. However, the driver took us places that usually aren't allowed, but because of the diplomatic status, we were good. I don't remember the trip but it's a cool story at least.
  9. Oh...I understand... But it's like saying, "This trip to Mexico City is epic. And for dinner we're going to our favorite Philly Cheesesteak restaurant"😉
  10. I know when I think about food in Berlin, the first thing that comes to mind is sushi...😅
  11. There's a chance that this Lia Thomas could break some of Katie Ledecky's records this year...that would be a travesty.
  12. How about having 2 divisions, similar to how we do it now, except that the divisions are: OPEN (anyone can compete in this one, including trans or women) and WOMEN (only biological women can compete in this one). This allows the trans to still compete, but without disrupting the biological women's sports.
  13. My growing up didn't involve a whole lot of chains. I lived overseas until I was 10. But, we came home every other year. I remember as a kid that one of my big excitement things was seeing the McDonalds sign: 110 Million Served 323 Million Served 857 Million Served. (OOOOOOHHHHH. When are they going to hit 1 BILLION?????) That kind of thing (big spreads since I was gone 2 years at a time)... I remember eating at McDonalds in London and looking weirdly at all the Brits eating their burgers with a fork and knife. But, when we came back, we stopped in NJ (Mom's family) and SA (Dad's family) and we'd occasionally go out to eat. Only really remember my SA food trips though. I do remember Son of Sam was going on the last time I was in NJ before we moved to the US. Then, living in SA...we had Godfather's Pizza and Taco Cabana that were serious gotos once I got mobile. I went to Madison so I lived WAY out at the edge of SA then.
  14. Maybe white supremacy? Will that work?
  15. OK OK OK!!!! We get your point!!!!
  16. Most of them will give you an idea of what it can power in your house in their specs. Not just BTUs, but real world values like heating 2 150 sqft rooms and powering a fridge and freezer or some shit like that.
  17. Tip Top Cafe in SA used to be excellent CFS. Used to get it all the time as a kid. But, haven't lived in SA since 1986 and when I DO go in that area, it's to get Jacala tex mex... Hope it hasn't gone downhill since then.
  18. When you get to Dallas, get on I-20 and drive west...past Ft Worth. Past Weatherford. Get off in Strawn. Go to Mary's. It's not hard to find. There's only a few places in Strawn. Order the medium (don't order the large unless you're Joey Chestnut). You're welcome.
  19. I'm a deist. So I don't have an Orange God, Trump. Why are you lying about me? And shit posting. And trolling. Especially since this is MY FUCKING THREAD! Why are you here?
  20. Yep. Completely sane...
  21. Wait. SHE is a liar? Who woulda thunk?
  22. You gave me more than 20 neg reps on MY thread that is about ME with me not saying a thing to you. Obsess much?
  23. I don't "repeatedly" post incorrect information. In fact, I posted information on this thread that was was posted on here from another poster. Then, Penelope said that was incorrect. Maybe that's true. Maybe she's lying. I don't know. Considering her repeated attacks on me on Surly, I wouldn't be surprised that she lied. But, I won't call her a liar because I don't know for sure. BTW, I posted my views on that thread. And they were not liberal views. So I got hammer fucked. Just because you don't agree with my political views does not make me a liar and whomever is attacking me a saint...
