  1. Actually, my posts were even nicer than 956's. I didn't denigrate NYC, just said that many other cities have much more to offer of things I prefer...
  2. While that IS funny...even though I'm an Aggie, I am not THAT dumb.😀
  3. Watch yourself on the NYC comments...I said essentially the same thing on the NYC thread and was attacked mercilessly😀...
  4. Oh. Didn't realize you were the only one allowed to define "welfare". You should tell all those people in the federal government to run statements by you before they make you look wrong. https://www.cbpp.org/research/family-income-support/temporary-assistance-for-needy-families#:~:text=Under TANF%2C the federal government,as defined by the state. First, TANF spent $31B in 2019, so it was obviously not capped. https://www.pgpf.org/blog/2021/04/what-is-snap#:~:text=Totaling %2463 billion%2C or 1.4,week) per person in benefits Oh yeah, don't forget SNAP. That's just $63B.
  5. What in the absolute blue fuck are you talking about? http://federalsafetynet.com/welfare-budget.html This is the left leaning site I was criticizing and even THEY have Welfare at $847B.
  6. So, over the summer, NPI got a Guajillos restaurant. Apparently it's a second restaurant from their first SA place. Serves "Mex without the Tex". I've heard really good things but I've been gone so much for work over the summer I haven't had the chance to try it out. And, on my drive home today, I saw a sign that says we're getting a Las Palapas which is apparently an SA chain sit down restaurant. Heard it's good, though. So, more options here which I like.
  7. Wait. Aren't you supposed to be in the front????? Who's flying the plane?
  8. His link has defense at $1.1T. The government says $762B. That's a difference of $338B. Which, in the the federal government is known as a rounding error, but for the rest of us is a. BIG FUCKING NUMBER.
  9. Ok...I'm back home in Corpus. So, to start: Yes and no. They work so closely that there's a lot of incest but they ARE separate. And what do you mean by "the defense industry"? Do you not realize that means tens of thousands of companies all over the US? EVERY industry has a lobby, Lockheed has one. Planned Parenthood has one. PETA has one. So, I don't know where the fuck you got that graphic, but is terribly wrong. Here is the actual data from the US government. https://datalab.usaspending.gov/americas-finance-guide/spending/categories/ Defense is $762B. "Entitlements" are $1.9T I have never claimed that. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expenditures_in_the_United_States_federal_budget#:~:text=Most mandatory spending consists of,Federal government benefits or services. I called it "entitlements" because that's what they're called....
  10. I'm tired tonight, but when I get back to Corpus tomorrow I'll try to remember to respond to all the points you made here...
  11. I'll give you a hint. It's neither. The Aerospace and Defense Industry gave us that technology. DoD and NASA set requirements (very poorly) and the A&DI supplies the technology.
  12. Yep. You have no idea about the A&D industry. You remember that one quote from Ike and run with it. Now, you can blame the politicians for getting us in wars, but that's separate. Do you think the A&D companies started the wars or something? They just provide products that are requested by the Feds. Guns. Missiles. Planes. Rotorcraft. The requests come from government. BTW, just remember that entitlements are the biggest driver of budget deficits - they're double the DoD spending and have been for a LONG time.
  13. Just because you dislike the military does not mean it's been a net negative. BTW, the A&D industry also includes commercial aerospace...which still is subject to a large amount of government regulation (Fuck you FAA)
  14. That's a whole lot of words to say "I have no idea how the A&D industry works"
  15. Dammit! How will I high five anyone watching our game tomorrow.
  16. You're wrong on part and right on part. WRONG about the parts not being made anymore. That didn't matter. What mattered was that COTS solutions were NOT ALLOWED until the past 15-20 years. So, you're RIGHT that "so everything had to be custom designed and manufactured. Which with a limited run is rather expensive. Even for a fucking toilet lid." But, that was because the government regulations MADE them do that. In many cases they could have found a COTS solution to the problem but were restricted from implementing it. They did that for tooling in many cases too. Need a wrench? Nope, can't buy it from Sears. You have to make it. Oh, you only need 6 of them and the tooling to make the wrench costs $24K, well, looks like you've got some $4k wrenches. And while 3D printing is good for some things, my firsthand experience with it in NUMEROUS applications from large simulators to small UAS it's not the end all be all solution to a lot of issues. Don't get me wrong, 3D printing CAN be really useful. We print a lot of smaller things at my current job. Some are good, some are meh - the carbon fiber ones tend to be better, but more expensive. I spent 30 years in Aerospace and Defense before moving to a small UAS research center so I've seen this shit for a LONG time.
  17. OOOOOOOOOHHHHH...Burn. You sure got me on that one. Damn! You can go tell all your bros how you burned this Aggy on Surly!!!!
  18. Oh yeah...they're doing it patriotically..... But, how would I know if the market had set the wage or the government? Or if the government had raised the market wage higher due to external forces... If the government was not trying to manipulate the market, then maybe the market could actually set the labor clearing price.... But, then, I'm not the most fiscally conservative person here like you...
  19. I see you've never worked in that industry...smdh
  20. The reason for those $1200 toilet seats was due to government regulations... The OEMs could have EASILY made them for much cheaper. Luckily, they government has FINALLY realized that moving to COTS is better for ALL parties (government, contractors, taxpayers, etc)... they still impost too many scope creep requirements that it damps that out, but...it's better.
  21. Ah yes...fiscally conservative. I guess you really don't care if artificial forces (government) place an arbitrary barrier to the clearing price based only on political whims and it could hurt someone. It IS, after all, the economy, stupid. I'd say a fiscal conservative would oppose those artificial barriers, since only the labor market knows what the clearing price is...(BTW, while I oppose the MW, my quote only was that I wouldn't tip if the MW was $15/hr - that hasn't changed, I won't) But, I'll agree that you could easily be the most fiscally conservative person on here, since the vast majority of the posters here are left of Marx...kinda like being the tallest person in a room full of midgets. And...now I head back to food and travel where it appears the BODU doesn't do its cancel culture. Peace!
  22. BTW...I was lurking a couple weeks ago to see if the CR was still a burnt orange DU (it is) and I came across your post in which you stated that you were (paraphrasing) the closest thing to a libertarian on Surly... I got a good belly laugh out of that. And then you post this thread to shame people who are against a minimum wage (because all libertarians are DEFINITELY in favor of the government forcing an arbitrary wage on businesses)... Thanks for the additional chuckle...
  23. You're becoming quite odd in your old age...
  24. What boycott? I've never advocated for those...
  25. I flew into KCRP at 1600 yesterday. A little bumpy but only about 20ish kt winds. The drive to NPI was nominal. Wife had prepped our outdoors just in case so now I've got to move a shit ton of lawn furniture back into place. She said it was a tiny bit of rain. I was expecting my flight to be cancelled based on the initial reports.
