  1. You think it's because I care about the party. I don't. I care about the policy. I would be perfectly happy with a different system that didn't have the parties.
  2. You have stated, repeatedly, that the party interest is deserving of representation coming at the expense of community interest representation. Cornyn, in that he represents national party and national party financial interest exclusively in the legislative process is just a pure form of the outcome you've defended in discussions of gerrymandering. Sigh…. I didn’t want to do this, but I’ve had few beers so I’ll go against my best judgement and get into the stink that is the politics board here. I support POLICY representation throughout the state. For lack of a better system, the parties end up being the closest thing to get to a proxy for those policies. Texas is majority conservative. This is based on the proxy of the Republicans holding every statewide office and both Senators being Republican. So, I think, based on the above, that the majority of the state representatives in Texas, both in Congress and in the State legislature, should be represented by a majority of conservatives. Again - the best proxy we have for that is party (sure, the argument that parties suck is fine, but in this case we don’t really have much else to use). So, in this case Republican. Cornyn votes much more for conservative policies than his opponent would. So, a majority conservative state would likely elect him, barring some issue unrelated to policies (see Rob Moore in Alabama in 2018). So, again…it’s not “party” that I support it’s “policy”, but “party” is in the vast majority of cases the best way to get those “policies”. NOTE: My view is the same regardless of the state. I think California should be represented by majority liberal representatives (Democrats as proxy) based on their statewide elections. As to communities of interest, I don’t think that was ever really fully fleshed out in our earlier discussion with regards to drawing districts. For instance, Dallas County. There’s probably 50 “communities of interest” just in that county, many of which are right next to each other - take Oak Cliff and South Oak Cliff for example. But, many of those communities have certain things in common, such as being majority liberal or conservative. Other than having 50 representatives, lumping the conservative areas together and the liberal areas together (to get the Dem/GOP party proxy) is about the best way to deal with it… Now…maybe we need to have LOTS of more districts and representatives. That might help to break up the parties as being the major proxy. But, until then…here we are. (As to the book of Matthew, while I did grow up Lutheran, I'm not Christian now. I'm a deist.)
  3. True...Luby's always has been the after church place to go (except when I was a little kid visiting my Grandma in SA and we'd hit up Tip Top since it was only a few blocks from church and house). And that REK gag was based on truth. That house WAS literally across the street from the Presbyterian church. A couple of my friends lived there back when they were in school. Too bad that whole area has been bulldozed and rebuilt...
  4. Yes.
  5. Again...you've gotten my position incorrect.
  6. Where are the Presbyterians going to go?
  7. I really don't want to get sucked in...but I do want to point out that this is an incorrect representation of my position (which was in regard to gerrymandering so bringing it up on a Senate thread is odd).
  8. Not going to drag me back in the cesspool with unfounded claims... Carry on...
  9. Beach is open on NPI except for the Bob Hall area (because it is going to have to be torn down and replaced). But, I know we were expecting a clusterfuck here. It didn't happen though...
  10. @justhookitHow's the beach up there in Port A? I'm pleasantly surprised that our beaches here aren't just swamped with people. Much more sparse than earlier this year. Now...Corpus planted a shit ton of cops on the island to deal with what they thought was going to be an onslaught though...so be careful if you're driving after having a few on the beach. And it looks like they're dismantling that oil rig that blew...
  11. Yeah. That would be really cool getting up there in the air and looking down would be badass.
  12. Phantom 4 has around a 1 kg payload. A drone with a 5 kg payload is considerably bigger than that. We have some that have 5 kg payloads here at the office and they dwarf the size of a Phantom. But yeah those fishing drones are cool. I keep telling my boss we need to try that sometime. BTW, that smoked Amberjack dip at Giggity's is AWESOME.
  13. Lots of money? The Port is one of the top revenue ports in the US already. If VLCCs can come in it'll make a LOT more money for the area. Maybe then they can fix a fucking street or two...
  14. Yesterday was interesting on NPI. Sounded like a jet was taking off all day long. Turns out that the Magellan rig right off shore had a gas blowout and was venting all day...
  15. This is also good. Maybe add a little Limburger for some extra punch!
  16. They did NOT have that when I was in school...those fuckers.
  17. Gorgonzola and brie...
  18. Well, apparently SOME parts of NPI are opening back up to vehicle traffic. Access Rd 5 and Windward (and I think Whitecap). But, it's still closed south of Bob Hall due to clean up from Hanna (and PINS is still closed, but heard they might open later this week). Access Rd 4 is also closed due to sand from Hanna.
  19. The also have surprisingly decent pizza...
  20. Well, just drove out to Whitecap. Cars parked on it from Windward to the beach and they've still got barricades up. Oh well...
  21. I may go drive out and check it in a bit. As far as I know, we're still on vehicle lockdown. But, y'all at least have the excuse that you have your own PD. We're still part of CC and mainland CC only cares about us for the insane amount of taxes we send them...
  22. 6 feet is for when you're walking past someone. The distance should be larger for people who are seated and in proximity for a chunk of time. That's not what the CDC says https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/social-distancing.html#:~:text=Social distancing%2C also called “physical, both indoor and outdoor spaces. But, let's please not turn this into a Rona thread...
  23. BTW, I recommend Jacala off West Ave for Tex Mex...My dad grew up literally 3 blocks from there (off Santa Barbara). It's been there since the 40s and is pretty damn good. It's our go to when I meet my Dad in SA.
  24. I grew up in SA in the late 70s-mid 80s, too. I didn't mind SA...big town with small town feel almost. But I don't even recognize it now. My folks moved to Lakehills (Medina Lake) after I graduated HS (Madison). So, I drove through Helotes a ton back then. Holy Shit, I was just back there a few weeks ago and it was like I was in DFW. Almost got completely turned around it was so different. Still, it seems like a pretty cool place to live now.
