  1. I am admittedly a helicopter parent. Part of that is just my personality, but I was definitely affected by an experience I had early in my parenthood. When my first kid was 3 months old, she got rsv and was really sick, so we took her to Dell Childrenโ€™s. While in the ER exam room waiting to see the dr, there was some scuttlebutt out in the hall. Directly across from our exam room was another room, where I watched thru the window as a doctor and social worker pulled a young woman in to tell her that her child was dead. The scream she let loose is something I will never ever forget, and I will also never forget seeing the woman sitting on a bench outside the hospital sobbing when we left, with an empty stroller next to her. I found out she was coming out of a Home Depot in south Austin and the child walked out into the parking lot and was run over by a truck. The driver had to be chased down because he didnโ€™t even know heโ€™d hit anything. Anyway, ever since that experience Iโ€™m a total fucking freak when it comes to my kids walking by themselves, especially in busy areas. My 9 year old has always been super responsible and Iโ€™ve trusted her since she was 5, although I have never left her alone, mostly because of her younger sister. My 6 year old has the personality of a butterfly and still does not ever look before walking somewhere; I doubt she will be allowed to go anywhere alone until sheโ€™s a teenager. I think itโ€™s ridiculous to arrest a mother for leaving a 10 year old unattended for a short time. A poster above nailed it: 5-12 is when itโ€™s acceptable to start leaving a kid unattended or โ€œfree rangeโ€, but context should always be considered.
  2. That med took a long time to get approved due to having difficulty showing effectiveness in trials (13 trials showed it was not effective before it got the 2 positive trials required for approval). Thatโ€™s not to say itโ€™s not worth trying if other things arenโ€™t working, but I wouldnโ€™t hold out much hope that it will be the answer. I 2nd Trophโ€™s recommendation for ketamine for treatment resistant depression, especially if thereโ€™s suicidal ideation involved; the feedback on that has been very encouraging, and if my depression/suicidal ideation flares up again, that is what I will try. (I am not a doctor and everyone should consult their doctor instead of getting medical advice from the internet.)
  3. wtf are YOU talking about? Your comment literally said โ€œat no time since her announcement in 2019 has she been the driving force behind any policy ideas or political shift. Never a whiff of substanceโ€, bringing forward the idea that she lost because she wasnโ€™t the driving force behind any policy ideas and substance, as if that fucking mattered.
  4. I really wonder what kind of info Elon got on Trump when he bought Twitter. He and Putin probably have the same dirt.
  5. LMFAO thinking Harris lost / Trump won because of fucking policy. Dems played loser identity politics. If theyโ€™d ran a white male under 80 who kept quiet about trans and brown people, they would have won.
  6. Iโ€™m dead serious McConaughey could win the presidency in 2028. The Dems need one of the following: a younger version of Al Franken, Straight version of Mayor Pete, or White male version of AOC.
  7. Crypto douchebags are just the descendants of Dutch Tulip investors, pets.com hodlers, and MBS speculators. Talk shit incessantly on the way up, then disappear when the bubble bursts.
  8. Negged unfairly? The motherfucker continually circumvents the ignore feature and posting rules by creating countless usernames. Fuck him and fuck you.
  9. Another factor in my longevity is the fact that my job is sedentary. I realized recently that this year marks 20 years of having jobs that have me sitting at a desk for 40+ hours per week, and for the last 10 years Iโ€™ve worked from home so Iโ€™m not even commuting or walking around an office to socialize. Thereโ€™s a lot of recent research that shows thatโ€™s a significant risk factor, even if you control for exercising and maintaining a healthy weight (and a recent article said standing desks arenโ€™t really the answer). I probably only have another 7-12 years of work left. But I have been thinking more and more about changing careers to do something more active (although Iโ€™m not at all sure what that would be).
  10. Great thread and timely as the bulk of the posters on the site are transitioning into being olds. I consider the 5 pillars of longevity to be genetics, sleep, exercise, diet, and stress. So I focus on the 4 of those I can control while being aware of the implications of the one I canโ€™t control. TLDR: I am good at maintaining a healthy weight thru diet/exercise and getting plenty of sleep. I am bad at stressing out over little shit and eating too much junk food.
  11. I like Breggy, but Adames is the better baseball player when projecting 2025-2030.
  12. This might sound really stupid, and I think it might be, but I think the next Democratic nominee for president should say the word โ€œfuckโ€ and its variants a lot. Nothing would wipe away the stigma that Dems talk down to people faster. โ€These rich motherfuckers like Musk are fucking us! They been fucking us and they wonโ€™t stop fucking us until we take back control from the motherfuckers. Itโ€™s time to show these motherfuckers we are not fucking around!!!โ€
  13. Dems need to abandon identity politics and do a better job of making their message about class vs race and gender. They also need to be much more aggressive about demonizing rich people. The deficit issue is ripe to seize back the narrative because the GOP hasnโ€™t and wonโ€™t do anything about it. Same for immigration. Like yall said, the takeaway from Trumps wins is that you can either be in the right, or you can win, not both. Sad as it is to say, America is not ready to focus on gender issues, and race issues are still fragile. You have to get the idiots to think theyโ€™ll be richer with you in office, because that is really all they care about. I have no faith the Dems will fix their problem. They donโ€™t appear to have anyone in their bullpen who appears charismatic enough to do what has to be done. If Mayor Pete were straight, heโ€™d be a contender. But a gay man or minority woman will not win the presidency anytime before 2036.
  14. Fuck whoever that poster was who incessantly posted that GA was in the bag for Harris.
  15. Iโ€™m so mad at you right now. I fucking trusted you! Somebody needs to shut the fuck up. Might be the Pollyanna motherfuckers who had their trip to fucking Chilis all planned out before shit even started.
  16. Fuck that bitch who said Harris was winning Iowa
  17. I donโ€™t understand how Barack Obama won in this country. He mustโ€™ve caught errbody off guard and all the sexists and racists woke up and theyโ€™re never going back to sleep.
  18. Best case is 2020 with NC flipped. That is not the rebuke of Trump we needed. The motherfucker tried to incite his followers to overthrow the fucking government.
  19. This is not what you were saying would happen
  20. This is so fuckin depressing.
  21. Calling Florida this early wipes away any hope of a great American redemption.
  22. I have read a bit about The Great Wealth Transfer, itโ€™s one of the top 4-5 things I think will define American society over the next 20 years. Iโ€™ve already seen several people close to me have their lives significantly altered by being included or excluded in a will; these arenโ€™t even rich people or people with rich relatives. But even to a middle class person, a $100k+ windfall can be enormous. For me, I just reslly really really hope everyone older than me who is close to me lives long enough and lavishly enough to die nearly penniless. Money does crazy shit even to good people. And even to people who donโ€™t need or care about money, getting fucked over in an estate affects all the relationships involved.
