  1. Top picture is Dad (left) with Tony Crosby (50th Reunion). Middle is Pre-game KO of the UT vs OU game waiting on the coin toss results in ‘63. OU was #1 vs UT #2 going into that game. Dad is on far right with wrist wrap and hand on hip. Bottom is from the 60th Anniversary in 2023. Hook’em!!!
  2. I’ve told my Dad’s story before, but it might’ve been pre-Surly. He “played” FB for the Longhorns 60-63. He met Tony Crosby (Kountze) at either a HS basketball tournament or Spring track meet, as Dad being a pretty good athlete, but at a small school (Sour Lake) and played every sport, and found out that Tony was going to Austin to visit with the UT staff the Spring of their Senior year in HS and asked if he could ride along and maybe ask to “walk on” if needed. Coach Royal put Crosby on full scholarship, but Dad was offered a “partial scholarship” back in that day, but with certain requirements for his partial that include room/board, but only like 40-50% tuition help and etc. Dad grew up dirt poor and the oldest of 4 siblings, so he jumped at the opportunity. His first Fall, Freshman weren’t allowed to play in Varsity games and they had their on Freshman team that played 6-8 games like within Texas. They were referred to as the “Short Horns,” the Fr. team. Upon arriving on campus, he found out that his “requirement” for the partial scholarship included working in the Athletic Dinning Hall. So after practicing with the rest of the Longhorns all season, he had to bust his ass to the showers to report for dinner. Back then the team meal was served “platter style” and he was like the wait staff helping bring in the food to players that he was on the practice field with about an hour prior. After everyone left, he’d bus the tables and sometimes help clean the kitchen or do pots and pans. He wouldn’t get to his dorm room most nights until around 8 or later. By his Sophomore year Coach Royal still kept him on the partial, but relieved him of any Dinning Hall duties. He was basically a “Scout Team” player his entire tenure on the 40, and because the rule back then that you actually had to play as a statically recorded ST player (kicker/punter), Offensive or Defensive snap in a game to “Letter” as even though having played for two seasons on STs KO coverage/return etc, he hadn’t lettered yet through his Senior season. It wasn’t until about 3 min left in the Cotton Bowl (NC) game vs Navy that Coach Royal asked him on the sideline yet if he’d been in on offense or defense yet? Dad said no, so DKR said next stoppage of the clock you run in there and replace a lineman. Dad asked which position? DKR just said I don’t care just get in there! For the Longhorns’ 40th Anniversary of the ‘63 National Championship, they hosted Arkansas that weekend. For the reunion dinner/banquet, with Frank Broyels (UA AD) at the time I think, but previous UA HC from the 60-70s, DKR asked my Dad to speak in front of those in attendance (only about 2-3 former players), what it “meant” to be a Longhorn! Here was a guy that didn’t play meaningful snaps on the first UT NC team, but DKR loved Dad. As a child we’d go to Spring practice annually and visit with DKR. He’d always tell me that if he’d have had 30-40 Mickey’s each year, they’d never lost a game. Then we’d visit Rooster’s (mandatory) going to Austin from Dallas to buy real UT stuff. Rooster was on the Training staff while Dad was on the 40 and loved the little man, even though he was a “hard ass” on them working out under the West side back in the day. DKR attended my parents wedding in ‘67 in Deer Park, as Dad was coaching there. I think DKR was recruiting the Houston area that week, but he actually attended the service. Dad is 82 now and seems to lose teammates annually from his era, but they met for the 60th Anniversary the previous season. So proud of what he did at UT. 4th from the left - Top row. Mickey Riggs - 1960-1963. Hook’em!!!
  3. Been drinking but IMO a good CSB. Early 2000s and my McNeese squad was scheduled to play Nebraska. As a “small”donor, my football buddy and I bought a ticket to fly with the Cowboys, maybe four months prior. Living out of Lake Charles and a pharmaceutical rep, I’m in Lafayette and my buddy calls me saying we were not only leaving early, but TODAY at 5:00! There was a hurricane in the Gulf and the school wanted to be ahead of any possible delays. Frank Solich was the HC of Nebby back then and he couldn’t have been more hospitable to an arriving opponent. He/himself gave us a tour of the locker/weight room and opened the gate to walk on the field. We flew to NE a day ahead of schedule so with the team hotel/bus etc we went to see “Red Dragon” the Hannibal Lector movie and had a great time. Went to a Lincoln steakhouse afterwards and lo and behold comes some Nebraska Band members and cheer leaders to welcome us to town with their fight song and cheers. Great game that Saturday, as it was probably Solich’s worst Nebby team. Pokes were really in it to the end, as the sea of red helped keep us out of the EZ towards the end. Our SS “ear holed” their RB in the 1st Qtr and he never came back. That SS was Hadley Prince, the brother of Dooley Prince, Catcher for the ‘05 NC Baseball Team. I was on the field post-game and Coach Solich walked up to Hadley and said “Son you could play for me any day!” Hook’em!!!
  4. My Sophomore year, my Dad (varsity HC) wouldn’t put a Fr or Soph on the Varsity. Small 3-A school, so there was only 22 of us to run the Scout Team my Sophomore year. Me and a couple other DLs used to beat the OL (guards) to submission each day, as we were stronger/heavier. They were “pulling guards” weighing 185-195 (late ‘80s) and their OL coach, our JV Coach, would get on their ass after about every other play. On Defense, we didn’t really run the scout team (opponent), as he and my Dad just wanted to wear their ass out in practice. There was only 22 of us, so Dad got red skull and crossbones decals to adorn our silver helmets. Hell, we were better than the Varsity and it showed in practice! Yes, we’re talking practice. We called ourselves the Suicide Squad - roughly 1985-86. Hook’em!!!
  5. It’d be nice to know how she squeezed that MFer on. Ain’t no way by that picture. Hook’em!!!
  6. Son is an ER Nurse in downtown SA. He’s told me that he’s seen “sleeved” fingers where it was just the bones/skeleton remaining. He said it occurs once just about every two months at his place. Hook’em!!!
  7. OP - “Vertigo” gave a pretty good roster breakdown going into 2025. Spring portal - will Sark and Co. fill needs where they think they need a “stop gap,” prior to a youngster filling that role? We can only hope that the pieces are being placed to surround Arch in his 1st year starting. So much is already expected of him. Hook’em!!!
  8. It’s so “amazing” to an older guy how these young EEs can get a head start into Spring FB. It’s so much more beneficial than just showing up in August for Fall Camp. The Strength/Conditioning, Food/Meal program, but the best part is participating in Spring Ball. When the season starts, it’s almost like they’re not Freshmen. Hook’em!!!
  9. That’s going to have to be cut off for removal - if needed? Hook’em!!!
  10. It’s amazing how some take to “coaching,” coupled with Strength and Training programs that turn that 3-star Coal into a Diamond. Gary Patterson was the best at that over the last two+ decades. Hook’em!!!
  11. Hudson wore the Burnt Orange, so I’ll always tip my cap to him. Just the same as my “favorite” Horns while they were struggling during the mid-late ‘80s - Britt Hager and Eric Metcalf for example. Hook’em!!!
  12. Dan Marino (HOF) got the Dolphins to the SB his rookie year. He got beat by Montana and the 49ers, but most thought his time would come. Never made another appearance in the SB over roughly two decades of being a good QB. Some lesser QBs just happen to not have to “be the man” to get that SB opportunity and victory, like Dilfer, so it truly is a system and/or team that does it. Hook’em!!!
  13. Dad was my HC and we only got a football sticker for a victory (Fr to Jr years), starting from the numbers on the back, to hopefully making a stripe across the top. He didn’t like filling helmets with stickers (OSU), but liked a clean helmet. Senior year he did away with the weekly stickers. I did get the request my Senior year to get black Nike cleats, because I thought the 5-8 big CFB programs that used them looked cool. He always thought they, black shoes, made you look slow, which we were anyways! Talking 87-88. Hook’em!!!
  14. With all the returning starters for 2024, as well as a potential Heisman Top 5 RB entering the season, what in the Hell happened to the Pokes last year? With the two departures, I for sure thought that they, along with ISU and BYU, were locks to contend for the B12 title. Hook’em!!!
  15. His new nickname could be “Cool Hand Arch,” as you can tell that he’s been PR trained. Hook’em!!!
  16. Well, Marty does have a show on ESPN, plus he’s on the CFB networks/SXM, so I think the “Manning’s” thought it’d be OK to do a Marty Smith 1 on 1 - IMO. I actually enjoyed the 17 min and loved Arch’s responses. Hook’em!!!
  17. No but I believe that could be the Saints plan for 2026. The “Manning Family” wants Arch to have 20+ college starts, therefore 2 years as a starter, at a minimum, then “maybe” go to the NFL. Cam is right on the “tanking” thinking, just wrong team and a year too early IMO. NOLA Boy playing where Grandpa started the family football lineage, Hollywood can’t wait! And he hasn’t even had a full season as a starter yet! Hook’em!!!
  18. Can’t root for the “ELGSES,” so it’s all about CO and X helping make history. Hook’em!!!
  19. Sark is helping build a machine that ends up producing at the next level. Many of it it situational based, as AD Mitchell was producing for the Colts, but he didn’t know two weeks out who his QB would be. Sweat and Murphy implementing their roles as rookie DL on day one was impressive! J Whitt benefited early with some main WR injuries early in the season, but he made his mark early and often. The switch to ST benefited him during the last half of the season helped grow his stats to be All-Rookie. So proud of all of our Longhorns in the League and wish nothing for the best for them and may they stay injury free. Congrats on great rookie seasons! Hook’em!!!
  20. I hope X Worthy gets more screen time than her. Hook’em!!!
  21. JK, but she’ll most likely get roughy 5-10 min of TV screen time tomorrow evening in a Chiefs suite. Hook’em!!!
  22. It was a creation of the Mike Slive (SEC Commissioner) back in the day to keep an 8-game SEC schedule, while other conferences had gone to 9. Plus the fact that most teams had gone from a 10 game schedule to around 11 or 12, depending on the season. The Slive rationale was that if each SEC scheduled a “cup cake” in either week 2 or 3 of November, the conference was guaranteed an additional home game, but also a victory in those weeks, while 50% of the country experienced a LOSS during that timeframe, so individual rankings of SEC teams wouldn’t be impacted close to the end of the regular season. It was “glossed over” by the media pundits, because of the rough and tough SEC regular season. While teams in the B12 for example played each member throughout the season. Pretty smart and the SEC got away with it until now, as with the addition of UT and OU, it almost mandates that 9 game schedule in conference. The only ones balking that idea are the ones complaining about losing that additional home game and cup cake victory. Hook’em!!!
  23. “Go Birds!” too. Hook’em!!!
  24. ELGSES Fans should be making shirts this week! Hook’em!!!
  25. I’ll give you an example of unfortunate fandom. Wife and I moved to Lake Charles, for her job, prior to the ‘96 Football season. The local Fox Channel covered both the Beaumont(TX) and Lake Charles(LA) markets, based in Lake Charles. If there was a “conflict” of Saints and Cowboys playing their games in the same 12 or 3 window, the local Saints fans were forced to go to the LC Civic Center to watch the “free” telecast or find a place/sports bar with satellite telecast for the Saints. This situation lasted for at least two seasons before better cable/online access occurred so one could watch the Saints at their home. Hook’em!!!
