  1. Seconded, for myself.
  2. Littlefield Fountain for anyone who went to the University.
  3. As usual, Burns knew whom to interview. Douglas Green (Ranger Doug) has written books on the singing cowboys, Bill Malone has written often about the whole genre, and Ray Benson is an expert on Bob Wills and Texas Swing. I noticed the second episode seemed to have longer song clips, which I find a positive.
  4. "Silver Haired Daddy of Mine" was co-written by Gene Autry and Jimmy Long. "T for Texas" aka Blue Yodel No. 1 was written by Jimmie Rodgers, the Singin' Brakeman. Rodgers was Threadgill's musical hero and he sang and yodeled in Rodgers' style. Threadgill used to perform for free on campus on occasion in the late '60s and early '70s. He performed regularly at the Split Rail on S. Lamar. A documentary was made about him called "Singing the Yodeling Blues." http://imgbox.com/N3S4cUY3 Mr. Threadgill at Willie's first picnic, July 1973. Unsure why link isn't loading picture.
  5. I think so -- football player from my class. Not sure as I was in Austin by August of 1965 and never again lived in Big D. Checked Texas births on Ancestry.com. Yes, his father was a football player in WWS class of '65.
  6. His third wife, Nelda Cain Pickens, was a junior Cheerleader my senior year in high school (1965, W W Samuell, Dallas.) I only casually knew her (not the same circles) and haven't seen or talked to her since. Two siblings made good, as her sister Nancy married Jeffrey Marcus, of the Nieman Marcus family. Upper atmosphere society for a couple of lower middle class SE Dallas girls.
  7. Last man standing...
  8. CIA guarding new shipment at Mena airport.
  9. How you know I'm old... I have since accepted it, but for the longest time, I had a problem with the common use (workplace, tv, etc.) of the word suck. Everyone over the age of 12 (and many younger) should have guessed it was derivative of cocksucking. So It became okay to say "you suck [cock, implied] in any given situation. I have nothing against cocksucking, but find reference to it inappropriate in most public situations, no matter what language. You work with a lot of old farts? Rant over.
  10. My son had this album when he was a teenager. Overall, I wasn't impressed, but thought this song was really good, if a bit repetitive.
  11. Contemplating one's mortality as one ages: And a less serious approach.
  12. Just finishing up. Very thorough account, with serious research and documentation. I found it a slow read, but probably largely due to my age and difficulties keeping up with so many people.
  13. We buy these when a vegetarian niece is coming to a family gathering. Tasty, even for an old carnivore like me. I think only available at Central Markets, however.
  14. Watched King Lear. I had never read nor seen a performance of Lear and was very impressed with it. Anthony Hopkins was really great as Lear (no surprise), but I also really enjoyed Jim Carter as Kent. It's done in modern dress and trappings, but Shakespeare's dialog. I found it much easier to follow with closed captions on. It's in widescreen format, so the captions were not over the film view. And Emma Thompson was highly believable as a vile MILF.
  15. I fly the US flag, the Texas flag, and alternate the Longhorn flag and the Port A Strong flags. I also have a copy of Sheridan's San Jacinto flag (see my avatar) but haven't flown it yet. Maybe next April 21.
  16. Agree on AF&F. I buy their heavy duty US and Texas flags for use at the coast. I think it's called TEXTUFF or something similar. Usually have to replace due to fading before fraying. I get the 3 X 5 and don't know if they do 5 X 8 in that material.
  17. It wasn't? I would have voted for Ry Cooder over Steve Vai anyday.

    The Blues

A little note for those who don't peruse the Movies/TV threads. Netflix has Remastered: Devil at the Crossroads and Amazon Prime (and Youtube also, I think) has Can't You Hear the Wind Howl? for any of you fellow Robert Johnson fans.
  19. Put on my watch list. Reminded me of the Danny Glover documentary called Can't You Hear the Wind Howl? from '97 that I think I saw on PBS back around that time. Checked around, found on Amazon Prime and added to that watchlist to see again.
  20. Grandson is going through his ordeal for OA ( Tonkawa Lodge) this weekend. I'm going out on Saturday to watch the ceremony and have dinner with him. Looking forward to it.
  21. All seven seasons available on Britbox. Not sure where else.
