  1. Yeah, and if the next pandemic is anytime soon, half the population will refuse to take it seriously and we will get fucked. Major bank failures and pension fund insolvency are probably more likely in the short term than another pandemic or nuclear war but the suspense is half the fun!
  2. When you put it that way, why should any human like making widgets?
  3. Legally. Glock switches were mass produced in china and sold on Amazon for something like $25 as recently as 2021. The switch replaces the cover plate on the back of the slide so it’s a trivial install. Oh hey! You can apparently 3D print them, too.
  4. So they’re citizens, adults, they can serve in the military, they can vote for politicians that vote for war, they’re more likely than any other group to be a victim of crime, but they can’t own any gun until 25?
  5. The arguments I’ve seen are all budget (resources) related. Something like, “we can’t do <insert random expensive thing> in the US, but we can spend how much in The Ukraine?!”
  6. We don’t need F16s getting shot down over Ukraine. They would and the negative reaction it would generate in the US would out weigh the tactical advantage they’d provide. F22s are fun to imagine though
  7. something tells me Ukraine will get fuel. what usually happens when invading armies get stalemated? The only hope Russia has is if they can drag this on a few years and the west fatigues. the battle for crimea could drag on that long simply due to the geography, but the rest of Ukraine? nah
  8. It’s gone from relatively stagnant lines to Ukraine stuffing literally anything Russia throws at them and even hitting targets inside Russia. Even if it’s mostly symbolic, it’s big. There are also clear adversaries developing within Russia: Wagner vs Putin and militia groups vs Putin … Russia lost this special operation almost immediately but it’s now looking like Ukraine will actually WIN.
  9. Man the momentum really seems to have turned. a big takeaway from this for me is how quickly we’re going to deplete our advanced weapon systems in a conflict with an actual near peer. That war is going to become a ‘dumb’ meat grinder in a hurry.
  10. It’s a disadvantage playing on turf in football and baseball. The surface is too perfect. Teams that play on grass come to our fields and it’s easier than what they’re used to. We go to their fields and it’s harder for us.
  11. LMCI implied? Hadn’t heard of that one. link for convenience https://www.kansascityfed.org/data-and-trends/labor-market-conditions-indicators/
  12. Jimmy is a hack that spends too much time here, so he projects politics and takes offense on behalf of his political team when there’s absolutely no need.
  13. This was discussed about 50 shit posts ago so here’s a chart for context
  14. I wanna say I read they have like 800 of the SS cruise missiles and France has around 500. They’re pretty old tech that they’re designing a replacement for so it makes sense to use them where they have high value.
  15. I didn’t say anything about the tea party’s true motives. It was just relevant, humorous reference point in time. It was nearly impossible then and it’s truly impossible to balance the budget today. and I don’t care if it makes sense to you or what you think the future holds, our annual debt servicing is dramatically increasing and significantly eating into the budget. Look it up for yourself
  16. MLB laughs at your salary cap argument. I wager you’d have immense difficulty balancing the US budget while funding the things you care about without wrecking our economy. If it was going to happen, the time to try to balance our budget was when the Tea Party was a thing. With todays elevated interest rates, mandatory spending + Debt Payments = 100% of tax revenue. Every dollar toward discretionary spending is deficit spending. In other words, with a balanced federal budget, even if you spend $0 on US Defense, you have $0 for additional healthcare and education spending. Actually it’s even worse, you still need to find like $900B to cut. Without a massive technological break thru and productivity bump from something like AI, there will be extreme financial pain in our lifetimes.
  17. But by following the tax code, with its deductions and incentives and all, isn’t he paying into the system in a legally fair proportion? What specifically about the tax code needs to change? i sweater gawd so many of these discussions could be quick and legitimately productive if we could debate the actual laws rather than our feels
  18. Maybe I’m the only one that doesn’t know your story, but can you expand on this a bit? Maybe some specific examples of what tilted when? Congrats!!!
  19. Are there any serious, detailed proposals to modify the tax code in the pipe? I thought the inflation reduction act had some?
