Thanks.  Belmond is probably top of the list.  Decent rate with Sapphire points.

It seems like there are only a couple hotels in that area (Belmond and Hacienda de las Flores).  Is that the part of town you definitely want to be in?

It was a good spot. because it was in the middle of it all. Rosewood is really nice and bigger, but is also further removed. Could walk to everything at the Belmond.

    Thinking July or August.

We went around that time. I think August and keep in mind that some of the restaurants close anyway since it is low season. We stayed at St. Christopher and rented a car through the hotel. I would suggest renting a car anyway. Allows for trips to the grocery store and you can enjoy all of the beaches. It's fun to drive the island.

  3. We went over the weekend and had a fucking great time.

Friday Jazz Fest and meals at:
    Cochon
    Shaya
    Stanley’s
    Commander’s Palace
    Doris
    Cavan

All of them were great meals and we did our best to mix up the cuisines some. But passed on these:

Is there a main area to stay near for the most shopping, dining and night life?  Gustavia?  Like the St Barth’s equivalent to staying on the strip in Vegas or on South Beach in Miami?  Or am I not looking at the trip right?

And speaking of night life...how’s that?

Also, I know it’s French but do most places speak English?

And how well versed do I need to be with Euro Dollar exchange rate?

A lot of these questions depend on the time of year you are going. Summer is offseason and Winter is high.

Tenth Anniversary upcoming and strongly considering.  Tell me what I need to know.  Hurricane ruin it?  If not, is it back to being somewhat normal again?

I just checked some of the top hotels and most are still not taking reservations.  Hotel Christopher is though.  I don't want to waste a trip there if half the places are closed or boarded up or if the place looks like shit.  Or is it possibly the best time to go for some great deals?

I think there were some regulars from the other site and I just went over and read the thread on it.  But I have a feeling a lot has changed over the last few months.  @Johnny Sack?  @wild_turkey?

When are you going? Highly recommend Hotel St. Christopher. We booked on JetSetter.com and got a solid deal there.

  6. Details around the SPG and Marriott Program merger:

    https://thepointsguy.com/news/details-unified-marriott-spg-loyalty-program/

    • The new program will have one unified loyalty account with Marriott-style points, meaning SPG points will be converted into the new program at a 1-to-3 ratio. You’ll use this one account to earn and redeem across all three chains — Marriott, SPG and Ritz-Carlton.
    • There’ll be a single new 8-category award chart with bands for standard, peak and off-peak times of the year.
    • Elite status will be streamlined into one system, but you’ll still have the option in 2018 of earning toward status under the current SPG elite system.
    • Airline transfers are staying, with all the old airlines available (plus some new ones) and a transfer ratio of 3 points in the new program to 1 airline mile. And yes, there’s still a transfer bonus.
    • New credit cards will be introduced by both Chase and American Express, including a brand new premium card with fee credits and an annual free night.

Since you have a home office, I assume you have mostly 1099 income?

Make sure to be aggressive on business deductions. That may add up. As long as you show a profit and pay some tax, your likelihood of audit is extremely low.

No, just a remote sales/manager  (salary & commission).

Anyone have recs for a Saturday Jazz Brunch in May?  1PM flight Sunday so probably cutting it to close to try to do then.   Currently have a reservation for Atchafalaya but open to other ideas.     Also, thoughts on R'evolution for Friday night dinner?  That is current reservation.  Saturday night dinner have Peche which I've been to before and a big fan of.

Actually looking for the same. Right now I have a reservation at The Court of Two Sisters. A bit touristy, but it is quintessentially NOLA.

  9. So procrastinated for 4.5 months and sat down to do my taxes today. The outcome was that we have to pay a sizable amount this year (over $15k) and I wondering if I am missing anything. At this point, I think I may file an extension and consult a CPA, but I am not sure how much help they will be after their fee.

So I thought I would consult shaggy Surly on what might help lessen the blow here.

    Details and Deductions:

    • Dependent and Childcare (minimal due to income)
    • Charitable Giving (we gave, but not much)
    • Mortgage Interest
    • Home office
    • HSA
    • Maxed out 401k(s)
    • Property Tax
    • Sales Tax

Am I missing anything here? Are we just fucked because of income? Thanks in advance for you help or witty asshole responses.
