I'm surprised they don't have backup generators to run their refrigerators and freezers. I know several grocery stores in coastal areas do because of hurricanes. Guess it's cost prohibitive if inland.

Yeah, most of the newer HEBs in the Houston area have generators. For those that don’t, they bring in big ass units on trailers and have them hooked up and ready to go when there’s activity threatening in the Gulf. Obviously, in this type of situation they didn’t have a long enough lead time to bring those trailers in.

Starlink Mini on the Roam plan which is $1 per GB. I simply pause service when I don't use it. And I just carry the entire setup (Starlink Mini with power bank) in my laptop bag since it takes up just as much space as a laptop.

It really is the best connectivity device to have in outages like this week, any dead spots when road tripping, and high cellular network congestion during large events.

Plus, you get to support fascism!

Totally agree, which demonstrates how difficult it is to do. They know logistics better than anyone I can think of. They should run FEMA.

There are mixed reports on whether she sang for 3 mins or 45 mins. I'm going with 3 mins feeling like it took 45 mins.

Watching 22 seconds of that felt like 45 minutes.

I understand that they can't just "temporarily" take all that stock to other stores to keep from losing it, but I kinda wish that they had a system to look at the clock, realize that all that stuff is gonna hit critical temp in, say, 4 hours, and call the foodbank and say "come grab what you can - you have two hours."  Hell, even if they used an HEB refrigerated truck and volunteer labor to load it.  Just seems a shame to lose all that food when people are in need.

Agree, but unfortunately it’s just not that easy. My FIL is a retired ag economist who has spent his retirement years working tirelessly on hunger issues. He is primarily responsible, although he would never take credit, for the success of the food bank in his community. One of the things he works on is getting food to food banks that would otherwise wasted. We’ve had long conversations about this exact type of scenario and how frustrating it is to see food get wasted. The logistics of getting this food out of the grocery store, into temperature controlled transportation and into storage at a food bank all during what is an irregular operations situation is highly difficult. Not that it can’t be done, but there’s still inevitably going to be waste and it’s not as simple as calling up the food bank and saying “come and get it!”

    Not a good analogy.

You son goes out to work on an oil rig first day on the job.  Are you going to worry about his safety or whether he was thinking about whether he is secretly biased against his African American coworker?

I can remain committed to equality and opportunity without using the specific jargon of equity and diversity.

I can't be committed to safety without following safety guidelines.

Finally, there are built in financial disincentives to not following safety policies let alone the finality of death or dismemberment.

Your term lip service is appropriate. I think DEI in lots of lip service in many private firms.  To me it almost hides issues of opportunity.  We remove that veil then after this administration is done we can work on the real problem and not put the veil up again as lip service.

Netted out I see it as an opportunity if discourse and the quality of legislators ever improves.

Do you not understand how having a bias against your coworkers on an oil rig could create a safety issue?

The ABA is one of a very few national law dog organizations for "general purpose" law.  Most others are either "practice-related" (e.g. American Intellectual Property Lawyers Association, American Trial Lawyer's Association) or more or less advocacy groups.

Therefore, it made sense that it would weigh in on nominees.

I think their ratings were pretty fair and they'll still be able to do them on the basis of publicly available information.  That a judge nominee doesn't make herself available to the ABA on a voluntary basis should be a black mark against them (it won't).

Most information about judicial nominees, including the questionnaire they fill out for the Senate Judiciary Committee, is publicly available, as is almost their entire judicial record, if any.  So, this is, as usual, pretty performative.

They very well may be able to sue over this as it is clearly viewpoint discrimination.

So the usual response of “this is all pretty normal, nothing to be concerned about here” from the lawyers who keep saying our judicial branch is a-ok!

Pussies. Plenty of delicious foods out there. If you’re not willing to make a sacrifice for your country, you suck.

Two other questions ask how applicants would improve government efficiency and about their personal work ethic.

Responses must be 200 words or fewer and the memo seeks to prevent any cheating. “Applicants will be required to certify that they are using their own words, and did not use a consultant or AI,” the memo says, referring to artificial intelligence.

The 30-page memo, from White House Domestic Policy Council Director Vince Haley and OPM acting director Charles Ezell, implements President Donald Trump’s executive order ending diversity, equity and inclusion in federal hiring.

The order also required that the government prioritize hiring people “committed to improving the efficiency of the Federal government, passionate about the ideals of our American republic, and committed to upholding the rule of law and the United States Constitution.”

But Trump is also reshaping the US government’s workforce in other ways, overhauling the civil service system by giving him power to directly hire and fire as many as 50,000 jobs previously reserved for career federal employees.

“What we’ve seen is an overwhelming effort to cow the workforce and frankly ensure that there’s a loyalty to the president of the day more than anything else,” said Max Stier, president of the Partnership for Public Service, a nonpartisan group focused on improving the federal workforce.

Asking the new questions is “deeply problematic,” he said.

“Bluntly, it’s an almost partisan and ideological overlay without understanding the responsibilities they’re hiring for.” For example, there’s no reason why a dental hygienist at the Department of Veterans Affairs should have an understanding of Trump’s executive orders, Stier said.

Beyond the content of the questions, Stier said adding four essay questions to an already burdensome federal hiring process can only make it more difficult for the government to hire the best workers, calling it “a recipe for dysfunction.”

But OPM says the questions aren’t much different from those any employer would ask to make sure that a prospective employee fits with company culture.

“It is a best practice in hiring to ask all applicants the same questions,” said OPM spokeswoman McLaurine Pinover. “The answers can then be evaluated by the hiring manager and agency leadership to evaluate whether the candidate would be a good fit for the role.”

The federal personnel agency said the plan’s overall goal is to reduce the length of the hiring process to less than 80 days and create “a federal workforce that reflects the highest standards of merit and service.”

The memo also implements new skill-based assessments, consisting of at least two tests of technical skills for many jobs, and eliminates unnecessary college degree requirements for many positions.

CDC will do whatever TV tells him to do. He’s their bitch and he knows it. That’s not a knock on him. It’s the same for every other AD in the country. It’s delusional that you think otherwise.

  13. The posters here who still get irate about kickoff times and demand that the athletics department put their foot down and dictate night games crack me up. They would schedule games at 4a if ESPN told them that’s when the game is going to be played. The person holding the purse strings holds the power and, in the case of college football, that person is TV.

I think somebody mentioned it above but I'm surprised that Tejas completely fell out of the top 50. That was a top 10 place not that long ago and from what I can see online, Scott Moore is doing the same things he's always done and is even introducing specials that look pretty good. He hasn't commented on the list coming out online that I've seen.

That was one that stood out to me. I haven’t been out there in a couple of years since it’s pretty far out there for me, but it’s one that I’ve always had as one of the top tier in the Houston area. My wife has been bugging me to go back out there (and to Snow’s - ha!) so we might need to get on that to see what’s up.

Wonder how much mix affects that avg Tesla price? More model 3s in the mix now vs more model Ss before?

I mean I know the market is making a statement but I still wonder about mix.

Tesla doesn’t even break out sales of S, X or Cybertruck due to the number being so insignificant. Those high dollar models are a drop in the bucket. They only sell about 50k of those combined.

I know half-a-dozen people who died from covid over the span of 2 years and it's probably a bias of some sort because I'm pushing 50 and so my aunts/uncles/older in-laws/friends' parents are all in their 70s-90s so I knew a shitload of senior citizens/elderly.

But on the isolation thing, help me out here, I'm not trying to be a dick or insensitive, but when you say "isolation" what are you talking about? We were never stuck in our homes like the Chinese were and I'm always curious when I hear people talk about "isolation".

In my case, my family, weather permitting, were out walking or biking every single day, walking around parks or just down the creek, we were driving out to pick up food at various restaurants and grocery stores (whose employees were obviously coming in), we were getting stuff delivered from Amazon, Walmart, etc. I was on Zoom 2-3 hours or more a day, my kids were on Zoom 2-3 hours a day with classmates.  We had multiple evenings during the week where we were on Zoom with my wife's Sunday school group playing games or just shooting the shit.  I had 3 different zoom calls setup every week with various parts of our family where we'd have anywhere from 5-10 family members on a call, plus I had a regular zoom call going with about 20 high school friends (and prior to that our interaction was the occasional text or facebook message or like).  In fact, I spoke with some family and friends far, far more during COVID than I did before or after.  I mean I had a calendar on the wall listing all of different things we had going on every single day or night in terms of zoom or phone calls or online gaming with friends (Roll20.net was amazing).

So when I hear people talk about "isolation" during COVID, I'm always curious, because I was arguably more connected with family/friends and some people I did some freelance projects with during COVID than I ever have been before or after. In fact, our older relatives that we rarely talked to, we were talking to every week or two for an hour or more, and checking in on them, etc. Now it drove me crazy that my kids and wife were home all the time, but that was just a lot more family time than anticipated.

I will say it did affect kids in school at certain ages - that needs to be studied, although many have seemed to have bounced back or even forgotten about it (depends on the age of the kids).

What I'm getting at, is what kind of "isolation" did those people go through, that died?  I freely admit that I've joked about how all of the preppers who had their bunkers or survival closets stocked full of Jim Bakker 'Bucket of Mashed Potatoes that will feed a family of five for a year' were melting down that they couldn't go to SuperCuts or eat in at Chili's, but what did isolation look like for the people you are talking about?  Because I always felt like we were never fully isolated - we could still get out and walk or drive around, or put on our masks and go stand 6 feet apart in HEB.

Man, 100% this. We were so much more intentional about making connections with friends, family and neighbors during COVID. We would drive to Austin just to sit outside on my parent’s back patio to have dinner and wine and then grab a hotel downtown. We had weekly driveway happy hours with an open invite to all the neighbors to bring their camp chairs and drinks where we would stay up late BS-ing, laughing and drinking. We had scheduled Zoom calls with friends in other cities. I had a weekly Zoom happy hour with my group of seven closest friends. Our schedule was full and we never felt isolated because we got creative and made it a point to have social interaction. There are definitely some parts of that that I miss.
