Had a roommate in college that insisted that walking was a right and driving is a privilege and that pedestrians had the right of way. This was all well and good until one day we were crossing 21st between Moore-Hill and Roberts and he blindly walked into the street to only be hit by a motorcycle.

Quattro. This reminds me of a story from the mid-80s. A buddy of mine hired some day laborers to dig a trench in his back yard. Being that it was summer I was home from college. I rode with him in the morning to the location where all of the laborers would gather for any potential work that day. We pull up and ask for help to dig a ditch. This one dude steps up and says, “Quattro”. My buddy says “Yes, Quattro grab two of your friends and let’s go”. At the end of the day my buddy hands out the cash for payment. Quattro looks at the money and says, “Quattro”. My buddy says “Yes Quattro, that is it”. Again Quattro says “Quattro”. My buddy, sensing a problem, says “Quattro, you have been paid. What is the deal?”. Again Quattro says “Quattro”. I finally realize what is going on and I tell my buddy, “You dumbass. His name is not Quattro. He wants $4 per hour and you only paid them $3 per hour.” My buddy, “So his name is not Quattro?” I reply “No. Pay these guys another dollar per hour.”

Recommend the Grand Canyon and just hit the overlooks for the visual splendor. Other options is to go to Sedona and then up to Flagstaff and on to Sunset Crater National Monument and do some easy hikes in some volcanic lava flows and around the rim of the crater. There are also multiple Native American ruins to visit in the area too. Will be cold and a snowy in the area. Or, Head south to Tucson and visit the Pima Air Museum, Desert Museum, Old Tucson and/or even drive over to Tombstone and the OK Corral. The weather would be warmer there.

Going to be there at the end of this month and in to early November. Hopefully it will be cool by then. Would also be nice to see some Fall colors in Oak Creek Canyon with fall coming late this year.

But why? I learned another lazy slang the other day. HOCO. After asking around I found out it means “homecoming”. Some kid had made a sign, placed it in a front yard to ask, I assume, his girlfriend to go to homecoming with him. -
Ummm...typos?

I don’t pucker up but I do get around them quickly. A few years ago I got stuck beside one of them because the vehicle in front of me decided that they were ok to cruise along beside the 18-wheeler after catching them on a hill to only loose the advantage going back downhill. There was a car behind me too that thought we were going to get around the truck quickly. The 18-wheeler threw a tread and took out my right front quarter panel, RH light and my hood on my 1-year old pickup.

A follow-up on my insurance saga of my damaged truck caused by an inattentive driver (you get one guess). I finally received approval to get my truck fixed. The other driver's insurance company sent me an email providing me with a reservation number for a rental car. So I take my truck to the body shop and then go to the car rental company. Two people are working the store. One is checking people in and the other guy is out pointing out all of the features of the rentals to the customers like he is a salesman at a car lot. He takes about 10 to 15 minutes doing a walk around with each customer. People are getting impatient inside. I finally get to the counter and tell them that I want the "express service". I give them my reservation number. The employee types in the number only to tell me that they do not have a car for me. Naturally I ask "why?". She tells me that they had tried calling me the previous week to confirm the reservation. I told her that I never received a call so I asked for the number that they called. Come to find out they did not call my primary number (cell) or my work number. They called the third number listed which was my daughter's number to call in emergency. They did not even leave a message for her when she did not answer the call. So I launch into my Seinfeld inspired argument about the meaning of "reservations", even referring to the fact that this felt like a sitcom situation from said comedy. Unfortunately there were no other cars at the site. The best that they could do is to have a car available two days later. I show up two days later to get my rental. They take me to the lot only to find out that there is a Mitsubishi Mirage waiting for me. I tell them that that car is not acceptable and that I am not into driving Little Tikes Kozy Koupes. I told them that I should be getting a "like" vehicle similar to what I drive which is a Chevy 4-door Silverado. I was told that is what the other insurers reserved. Again, there were no other cars on the lot to opt out to. They tell me that they could have something different the next day if I wanted to wait. Mind you all of this is taking up precious time that I really do not have to spare. So I tell them to give me the car. The guy begins to tell me about the car. I interrupt him to tell him that I rent cars all of the time and that I do not need the grand tour; just give me the keys and I will be on my way. He reluctantly concedes and I am on my way. Fortunately I received a call late this afternoon from the body shop advising that my truck is ready ahead of schedule and that I can pick it up tomorrow.

I did a two week trip up to that area back in early June 2022. I had been to that area numerous times on business trips and had only spent a day or so there at a time in the past. This was my first extended stay. I drove from NE Texas up to Teddy Roosevelt NP. I stayed off of the main highways to avoid traffic and to have a more relaxed, casual scenic drive. Along the way I drove the Outlaw Trail through Nebraska, parts of the Lewis & Clark Trail, across the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Reservation Native American Byway, parts of the Buffalo Trails Tour, Yellowstone Trail, and through the Little Missouri National Grasslands. While in ND I also visited the Fort Union Trading Post NHS. After TRNP I traveled down to Rapid City taking parts of the Theodore Roosevelt Expressway. Once in Rapid City my girlfriend flew up and we used Rapid City as our home base. We visited Mt. Rushmore during the day and went back at night for the patriotic lights and video. Also drove over to see Devil's Tower. Went through Spearfish Canyon, Deadwood (must visit the cemetery), the Peter Norbeck National Byway and the Needles Highway. Hiked parts of Custer State Park. Visited Jewel Cave and Wind Cave. Road the steam locomotive out of Hill City/Keystone. Drove through Bear Country USA. Visited the Crazy Horse Monument. Went to the Wall Drug Store tourist trap. Went to the Minutemen NHS and hiked parts of the Badlands NP. After the Rapid City stay the GF flew back home and I drove back taking in Agate Fossil Beds NM and Scotts Bluff NM along the way. It was a fantastic trip. The weather was nice, it even got cool at night. The mud (Bentonitic clay) was horrible at parts of TRNP. The crowds were light everywhere. Many of the hikes that I did it was just me and nature. Would do the trip again in a heartbeat.
