This can be a revelatory thing for a lot of people. And it's in tension with the notion that your feelings deserve respect. They do, but they often don't deserve action or even to exist for long.
It seems absurd, but if you can reach a point where you can just dismiss negative and intrusive thoughts, like literally "go away," that seems to be a turning point.
Exactly how you get there can be another thing entirely.
For example, the last time I got sober, I finally got to a point where I'd walk by the cooler case full of beer and think "fuck you" instead of having cravings, or anxiety. It's a bit like observing something dangerous or repulsive, just "nope." This has occurred to a greater or lesser extent with a lot of negative thinking patterns. I guess a big part of it is just recognizing it for what it is. It's like you pick it up, examine it, and determine whether it's useful or not and discard it if not.
