  1. Would actually strongly disagree objectively, but yes agree that’s literally true as it’s his perception. He won’t go anywhere.
  2. I have noticed that most native Californians I know have considered leaving, for obvious reasons. Unlike transplants, they invariably stay because family and, well, California, but also they fear if they leave they’ll never afford to return.
  3. Welcome! You just missed 90s in the city, otherwise a spectacular summer so far with no June gloom in sight.
  4. Congrats, where in the Bay? Your dilemma is a common one.
  5. Lol no he pays >$3k a month, that’s just the sad math everyone does at that point.
  6. Jon Tester, Kay Hagan, Blanche Lincoln, Mark Pryor. Idk about that.
  7. Probably just due to hurricane season. Aftermath of Ida dragged out a month last year.
  8. Now we’re talking. But that’s probably a little too far for tourists. I didn’t mean to start a redwoods fight, but I just find SF tourism confusing in that many of the tourist places are adjacent to superior places but are inexplicably absent of tourists. I love people experiencing my city, but just wish they could experience the best of it. Like, Ghirardelli Square is packed, but Ft Mason is just over the hill. There are mobs at Lombard Street, but a few blocks over Ina Coolbrith offers arguably the best view of the city. Battery Spencer and the whole Hawk Hill drive? Avoid the traffic and hike off Rodeo Beach. Muir Woods is certainly beautiful when not crowded, but as someone who hikes Marin weekly it’s not where I go for my redwoods fix.
  9. Yes, this is long but regardless of what you think about the argument, it completely captures the factual background that led to the recall. Nellie Bowles pissed off a lot of folks in town with this (mainly because she’s married to Bari Weiss), but shes’s native a San Franciscan and Californian aristocracy and this has carried a lot of weight.
  10. You become a California snowflake so quickly, right? I always feel bad about whining about 70+.
  11. I don’t know that any sports bars will let a minor in, but I think they can sit outside if the bar has a parklet. Original Joe’s in NB should have the game though, they have a good bar area for game watching.
  12. Well, you should go to Reinhardt Redwood Park in the East Bay, but if you really want to hike through redwoods in Marin you can totally avoid the clusterfuck of the main Muir entrance and park off the Panoramic Highway (or take the Dipsea Trail) and take trails through redwoods with none of the crowds. Just a local’s tip.
  13. Most overrated thing in the Bay Area. You can easily see redwoods in other places nearby, and you can even access parts of Muir through Mt Tam hiking trails - absolutely no reason to deal with those crowds. Main thing is in July, but I’ve had friends up there for events in the past few weeks.
  14. Pics aren’t loading, but guessing Maru Sushi on Powell? One of my favorite sports bars, Last Drop Tavern, just opened across the street. Beautiful weekend to head into the Bay. Recommend hitting up a park - Washington in North Beach, Alta Plaza in Pac Heights, Crissy Field or Baker Beach. Also will plug the new park that just opened up near Ghirardelli, Francisco Park. One of the few days of the year you can wear flip flops in the city.
  15. Yeah but no AC during heat waves is brutal.
  16. Congrats, Monterrey or Carmel? Would love to live in the peninsula but always assumed the market was ridiculous.
  17. Oh, absolutely. You’ll see that appear most strongly in the housing debate. But that wasn’t the case here. Over 1/3 of the city turned out for a special election to recall the school board in the most childless city in the country. Boudin’s recall was specifically triggered by the Troy McCalister case, viral videos of folks walking out of stores with bags of merch, and his failure to prosecute (and expressed empathy for) the Honduran gangs running the open air drug markets in the Tenderloin that contributed to over 1,000 overdose deaths during the pandemic. [Edit: Should mention rise in Asian hate crimes played a huge role as well.] In other words, indifference to a perceived sense of lawlessness. This wasn’t the typical progressive lapse into NIMBYism, but rather the confluence of several long-running developments in SF politics that I won’t get into but can be summarized as “people getting pissed off”. I’m sorry if I gave that impression. As I imagine it is in LA, “the homeless situation” serves as shorthand for the city’s inability to control - and perceived normalization of - lawlessness. Homelessness and crime certainly shouldn’t be conflated, was just being lazy.
  18. I don’t think “too liberal” is accurate. George Gascon, his predecessor, was also a progressive. Chesa wasn’t elected by majority, but I think most San Franciscans - and most Democrats - would agree that mass incarceration has failed and we should seek evidenced-based ways to reform the criminal justice system. In practice, when the pandemic hit property theft spiked, and frustrations about the homeless situation came to a boil as criminals could break into garages or steal from Walgreens with impunity. Quite simply, Chesa sucked at his job. I could go on at length, but the recall was the culmination of the manifestation of voter frustration with the performative politics of progressives during the pandemic. In a span of six months, we recalled three members of the school board following a series of national embarrassments, shot down Chesa’s former chief of staff for state assembly in favor of a YIMBY, and finally gave Chesa the boot himself - all overwhelmingly. To be clear, “progressives” are a distinct group within the factionalism of San Francisco politics, and San Franciscans are generally annoyed with city leadership as a whole, but they have generated the most visible controversies. As for Chesa himself, I think Annie Lowrey summed it up best in the Atlantic:
  19. 60/40 right now, fantastic. Thought we had lost momentum with this dragging on so long but folks really turned out.
  20. Yeah JFC I think I’m old and I was listening to Boosie and Webbie 20 years ago in high school. Hell, I was listening to Savage Life last week.
  21. Bacchanal is the GOAT imo. Bayou Beer and Wine Garden and Bulldog uptown are our defaults otherwise, with Columns, Val’s and Courtyard Brewing as honorable mentions.
  22. Cafe Amelie closed, RIP. In the FQ: Palm and Pine, Sylvain, Italian Barrel, Justine’s, Domenica is across the street. CBD/Warehouse: August, Herbsaint, Josephine Estelle, Gianna, La Boca, Couvant (just reopened under new ownership though and I haven’t tried it yet) Marigny/Bywater: Bywater American Bistro, the Franklin, Paladar 511 Uptown: Tons of places…Coquette, Lillette, LPG, Saffron, Avo, Gautreau’s, Costera, the Bower
