  1. On European Super League point..........point taken, and we clearly live in times where the collective conscience may be divided on how they view the pure capitalism behind such decisions. But are we Europe and is college football king in America the way the various 1st division soccer leagues are in Europe? I would offer that I run into a lot of "Football" fans that say they love and watch the NFL, but not as much college ball, the explanation most-oft given being that college football has "too many mismatches" of the Texas-UTEP, Bama-Citadel variety. I think part of what we're all witnessing here is broadcasting partners asking themselves what product they're paying literally Billions for and wanting to have more of a say in what their investment looks like in the future, especially in a "cord-cutting" era
  2. Until the Joker walks in the room and drops a 2x4 on the floor and says "We're having tryouts"
  3. And if I was king of the world, and if it was determined adding UNC and/or Virginia was a must, contraction of "existing" SEC programs would definitely be on the table. I'm not naming any names here, but one candidate might rhyme with "Chandlerbilt"
  4. Only thing I'll add to your points: I would imagine traditional TV (and new streaming) partners want elite matchups as often as possible and care less about the "massive potential backlash" you alluded to arising from too much exclusion. Now the broadcasting partners' collective legal teams?..........
  5. Florida State and Clemson.........welcome. UNC and especially Virginia.........piss off. And somebody get me Miami on line 1, and if it must be 4, VaTech please. Disclaimer: These comments were made without few, if any, consideration of TV markets and wholly from the perspective of keeping SEC football as elite as possible.
  6. When I compartmentalize all of this realignment talk in my mind, Oklahoma State is near, if not at the top, of the list of potential programs left behind that deserve better. I'll say this, if we're talking about the line forming to get into the club, Oklahoma State's place is closer to the front of the line than Iowa State's (since The Cyclones seem to be a popular topic of discussion the past few pages). Oklahoma State simply has more sex appeal than the ilk of ISU, more consistent success over a longer period of time (even if it hasn't been "ultimate" success), but their obvious problem is being the 2nd program in a small market state. It's just a matter of how many schools this assumed "new College Football Power league replacing the current NCAA" ends up taking. If there is a line, I would say Oklahoma State finds themselves behind the likes of Oregon, Washington, Stanford, Clemson, Florida State, Notre Dame, but join a "next group" of schools that includes the ilk of UNC, Miami, Colorado, Utah, BYU, West Virginia. I oft hear Kansas placed in this "next group", but their football program really makes me wonder about their place in these discussions. Iowa State?..........I would think they're in a tier below this next group, perhaps even SIGNIFICANTLY below this group.
  7. Last few years…..Iowa State football really turned it around, competed, contended for conference titles. Before that? Two decades consistently being one of the worst football programs in the 5/6 major conferences akin to Baylor pre-Briles/Griffin. Apart from this, Iowa State’s problem is the casual fan isn’t going to tune in to watch them play the way they would a blue blood plain and simple. That leaves your base and unfortunately The Cyclones’ base is the 2nd most popular program in Iowa……..not exactly what Madison Avenue is looking for. The Quad Cities have a larger footprint than many on this board might understand, but it’s still a 2nd tier footprint which is why it doesn’t have major professional sports and is barely even mentioned in that realm. What the Cyclones are selling just doesn’t move the meter for the power brokers moving the pieces around on this chess board. Sucks, but it’s true.
  8. Let the Untethering begin…..
  9. Can we get someone with some balls at FOX and/or ESPN? Someone to stand up and demand a little contraction to go with all this talk about expansion?
  10. Honestly, I’m a little surprised we haven’t heard these kind of stories more since realignment picked up steam again last year. The ghost of Ann Richards performs a silent clap
  11. Yeah, and to expand on the ACC, I seem to recall that the conferences "football" members were irked that the decisions on their conference's future were being made from the basketball-centric interests of the Duke's and the Carolina's. This was rumored to be one of the reasons Clemson and Florida State were exploring a move to The Big XII at that time. I'm guessing those sentiments will soon surface again. Hell, they probably already have
  12. Too bad this is about TV markets and not ticket sales
  13. Actually, one of the results of the realignment period of the last decade is it appeared the major conferences all scheduled their new TV deals at that time to expire at roughly the same time to give them the flexibility to secede from the NCAA and take control of their futures once those conference TV deals expired. Those conference TV expiration dates are now upon us.
  14. Just focusing on "one" of your mentions above: I don't really see how Duke has a seat at the tables we're discussing unless UNC "brings them with them" UCLA-style. Small, private school that was irrelevant until a guy named Coach K came along and ferried the university into "basketball" relevance. Marginal "at best" at football and historically in the conversation as one of the worst football programs in D1, AND that Coach K?.........he's departed for the parade to the afterlife as might the Duke athletics program
  15. Well, we know which Mega Conference would be winning every single national championship, every single year.....
  16. One thing's for sure, Notre Dame finds themselves in one hell of a bargaining position.......as usual. Leverage plays all over the place between the ACC and Big Ten with repercussions for the rest of the landscape whichever direction they ultimately choose to go in. Notre Dame could precipitate the dissolving of the ACC with a simple decision to join the Big Ten. And once the Irish lions leave the carcass, the jackals move in to pick off what's left. Sucks to be 'almost famous' in this landscape.
  17. And most importantly LARGE MEDIA MARKETS. SF/SEA.
  18. Been listening to various of the regional CFB insiders weigh in on these latest developments for a few hours this morning. My general impression is no one knew this was coming, and in general they are all reacting and “guessing/speculating” what might come next. Obviously everyone is looking at the likes of Oregon, UW, Stanford, Clemson, Florida State, Notre Dame types for their next reactions while also wondering if the SEC might want some of that west coast TV money. A lot of speculation of a “remaining” Big XII/PAC 12 merger as a preemptive action the commissioners of those 2 conferences could explore. Talk about Big Ten/SEC members looking at new broadcasting deals that would give member schools $100million per while acknowledging that there’s not much the remaining conferences could do to come anywhere close to that so there may not be a “3rd Conference” when the dust settles or conferences at all for that matter. Other speculation about a soccer-type “relegation” model for the have-not’s, though this seems a little more tricky to me even if I kind of like the concept.
  19. Didn’t give that tweet much credence earlier, but if Oregon and UW truly are applying for the Big Ten, then we’re looking at Pac 12 implosion and I could certainly see something like this on the table. Guess it would be the MWC for Oregon State and Washington State then
  20. The obvious answer would be more teams per conference…..more games on the schedule. Has always been a lot of resistance increasing # of games, but perhaps NIL puts that on the table now
  21. As this develops, I’ve always wondered if some conferences might consider “shedding” dead weight to add better programs, increase their prestige and thus broadcast revenue, while not continuing to add more schools than they can schedule for?
  22. Honestly, I have no doubt that the Big XII might “try” such an aggressive move, but my money would be on The PAC 12 poaching The a big XII, perhaps Okie Lite or BYU
  23. So what happens next? PAC 12 looks to poach (perhaps Okie State, BYU)?
  24. If PK’s lost that championship feeling, he need look no further than across campus beeches cause’ weeeeeeee are the chaammmmpions…….of the world…. https://tower.utexas.edu/2022/05/10/light-the-tower-longhorns-win-2-national-titles/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=UTAustinSocial&fbclid=IwAR3bo5TSSPPh9uz4tz1i3qiFYgPtDy06KXZ9K-GkK_iXlDRYt_7fkmPgh2k
