  1. I like winter camping in the BWCA too, and I've enjoyed your posts about it- but this is kind of a weird comment. Winter travel in the BWCA is far more inherently dangerous than other seasons. That's a huge reason why so few people dare to do it. Furthermore, the vast majority of those who do winter camp up there are either super experienced and well equipped, or opt to use local guides, as you have clearly (and smartly) done. Between 150k and 200k people visit the BWCA every year between May and Sep. Deaths are very rare. That's why it's particularly tragic and notable when it happens. Bugs, crowds, and heat are all legitimate reasons to prefer late fall and winter over the spring and summer. The relative risk of injury or death (even by drowning) is not.
  2. Had a good week with the guys up in the Boundary Waters. Lots of lake trout- perfect eaters. Caught (3 out of a baker's dozen- all about this size) Smoked (rocks, fire grate, very large piece of wet birch bark) Trout Cakes (from left over smoked) Fried
  3. And fast. In fact, the picture I posted itself brings up a good example. This was the first week of what was supposed to be a four(ish) week trip along the border. It was cut short after one of the guys (the one taking the picture here) broke his ankle badly in week two. We had to get him out in what was a very long day. Ultimately we opted to finish the trip the following year instead of continuing without him.
  4. Really sad situation at a place I know well and love a lot. https://www.mprnews.org/story/2024/05/21/heavy-rain-hampering-rescue-efforts-for-missing-canoeists-in-boundary-waters I was actually in the Boundary Waters last weekend when this happened, but on the other side of it. I do recall seeing a float plane fly by on Saturday or Sunday, which is always a bad sign up there. I have traveled through that area though a few times and that's a pretty unforgiving area. Big water, and the falls themselves are pretty vicious. The full story is still trickling out, but apparently the two boats were at the top of the falls fishing, I think anchored. One boat started to drag and the other attempted to save the others. There's no definitive word whether they were wearing life jackets, but life jackets have been found and two men still have not. Here it was in the fall of 2020 when I was there last. That was in the fall. It's much worse this time of year.
  5. Yeah, that isn't going to go well. Chaos might as well be listed as the main character in this show.
  6. https://www.kark.com/crime/former-crawford-county-deputy-pleads-guilty-to-use-of-excessive-force-2/ FORT SMITH, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — A former Crawford County deputy changed his plea during a hearing on Friday to guilty and will now await sentencing for using excessive force during an arrest in 2022. Levi White pleaded guilty to deprivation of rights under color of law causing bodily injury and has chosen to be sentenced by a magistrate judge. Former Crawford County deputy Zachary King pleads guilty to use of excessive force His sentence will be no more than 10 years in prison, no more than $250,000 in fines, and no more than 3 years probation. White along with codefendant Zachary King were accused of allegedly using excessive force while arresting a man in Mulberry in 2022. The deputies and a Mulberry police officer were seen in a viral video posted to social media beating a man while handcuffing him. The deputies were suspended and later fired. Arkansas State Police investigating arrest in Crawford Co. after video shows apparent beating of suspect A federal grand jury returned an indictment charging White and King with federal civil rights offenses for using excessive force on the man. After today’s hearing, White was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals until sentencing which could take up to 4 months. White’s lawyer tried to argue against incarceration but was denied by the judge. However, the judge said they could appeal his decision. King pleaded guilty on Monday to one count of deprivation of rights under the color of law. He could face up to one year in prison, and a $100,000 fine.

  11. If it's a game thread, you're watching it on DVR and still in the 1st quarter. They've cleared it already. Just kind of cleaning up now.
  12. It kinda is when both sides want to do it.
  13. Parody becomes reality right before our eyes. I hesitate to link this because I really don't find it funny, but It's amazing to me how much that "bring us food" clip (with the dude in a belly shirt no less) mirrors it so perfectly.
  14. Eden Prairie is great. Good schools and good sports. There's no austin comp for it, but I'd say it's kind of like the Woodlands to Houston? Great Outdoors it is not, but you don't have to travel very far to get it.
  15. As far as restaurants go, I don't have much for you with the exception of Maynard's. The food won't blow you away, but it's right on the lake and is a staple for those who live in the area and play on the lake.
  16. When you said "partner track in a law firm" up thread, I figured western suburbs right away, so Minnetonka certainly fits. Of course it comes with all of the trappings of an upper/upper-middle class community, but Minnetonka is a very nice place, and Minnetonka public schools are arguably the best in the state. The area around the high school is very established and has a good mix of newer houses, and renovated early 80's era 2300 sq. ft. homes. Of course even the latter is still going to cost >$500K, but values, I think, will hold really well over there. On a good day, you can get downtown in about 30 minutes from there, but bad weekday mornings and afternoons can see double that. For recreation, there's no shortage of things to do around there- Lake Minnetonka in particular is the biggest draw, for people with the means to enjoy it.
  17. Plenty of money next year for free agents.
  18. Denver for sure would have. I have no doubt they were the other team on the phone. Fucking Payton.
  19. That's what he gets for chasing the $$$. Anyone who pays you that much doesn't know what they're doing.
  20. Byron to the Vikings at 23?
  21. Nope. No way. He didn't do anything wrong. The birds did.
  22. um. wat?
