  1. Yeah, I think Israel is making this one up.

I mean, that's exactly what this is. They're only playing because they're hosting. Usually the Cup goes to countries whose citizens (and athletes) actually care about the game, so they fare better in the matches.
  3. That was my initial thought, but here's the the only statement that address it from the linked article (translated so disjointed, but you'll get the point): "The head of the Intelligence Division in the IDF, Major General Aharon Haliva, said today (Monday) at the INSS conference in a conversation with his predecessor in the post, Tamir Hyman, that Iran is considering "interfering" with the World Cup games in Qatar, and said that "the Iranians are also considering hitting the World Cup in Qatar - and the only thing stopping them is how the Qataris will react." Still vague, but clearly they don't just mean "taking their ball and going home". I still don't see it. No way.
  4. Dammit, I zoned out after the 1st game and forgot to switch channels. It's not that I missed anything, but I was forced to endure 15 seconds of Skip Bayless before figuring it out.
  5. Well they can't be happy about their teams stance (or performance).
  6. Or, to put it another way...
  7. Ticketing app issues mean hundreds of fans miss start of England v Iran

...But nobody has gay sex. Right. Suuuuure.
  9. I have. Once. 30 years ago. That was all it took to ensure there was no 2nd time. Steel soap? Gloves? I feel like I've taken crazy pills!
  10. Are you fucking serious? I can pick, peal, and dice an onion in about 15 seconds. Why double the time getting and putting on gloves? Should I wear onion goggles too? Fucking A.
  11. I think that's a reasonable position. Reporters should ideally strive to cover the story, but careful not to become it. I think that's a reasonable position too. Qatar has openly and repeatedly stated that LGBT folks were welcome. To take them at their word and wear a symbol of support (we don't know that he's a member of the LGBT community) shouldn't be assumed to be an intentional provocation.
  12. From the NYT Article: Well isn't that a coincidence... https://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/fifa-president-gianni-infantino-has-moved-to-qatar/47267300 I wonder how much he pays in "rent".
  13. Big NY Times article dropped this morning. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/19/sports/soccer/world-cup-qatar-2022.html
  14. South Africans? Weren't them the fuckers with the vuvuzelas? Never again.
  15. Here's the after story conversation:
  16. Here's a short clip from Real Sports years ago. If you have HBO Max I'm sure you can find the whole story. I remember it being pretty disturbing.
  17. It all depends how you're cooking the books. If you die from falling from scaffolding in the stadium onto the field, Qatar is going to count that. But what about the Nepali who died building an access road? Or all of the people who died of respiratory failure from the pollutants. Or the people who died from the poor living conditions (bad water, shotty electrical, etc). They die of those things in their own countries too, but they're only there because of the World Cup jobs. So do you count those folks or not?
  18. Oh fine. The number basically refers to all immigrants who died in the 10 year period of World cup build out. Qatar says that's pretty standard mortality rates, but it really isn't. Qatar officially lists the deaths at about 37, which is widely regarded as bullshit, but we're never really going to know.
  19. Sure. TLDR: Context matters.
  20. I posted both the story that reports it, and the fact check that explains the context.
  21. Gopher, I don't prefer his casual homer style either, but sheesh.... there are a whole lot of people who listen to him weekly that love him.
  22. That's a questionable number (there have been some estimates as high as 15,000) that was originally reported by The Guardian. https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2021/feb/23/revealed-migrant-worker-deaths-qatar-fifa-world-cup-2022 Here's a decent fact check of that and other various claims: https://www.dw.com/en/fact-check-how-many-people-have-died-for-the-qatar-world-cup/a-63763713
  23. https://boingboing.net/2022/11/16/world-cup-fan-village-being-compared-to-disastrous-fyre-festival-video.html Qatar has been prepping for the FIFA World Cup for 10 years, building stadiums, a new airport, new roads, and much more (to the detriment of at least 6,500 migrant workers, who have died since the constructions began). And their latest project? A "fan village" of shipping containers and tents, each that cost around $200–$300 per night, that will accommodate 60,000 out of 130,000 soccer fans expected to attend, according to Yahoo! Sport. But oops, someone posted a sneak-peek of the "deluxe" accommodations on social media (see video below), and now commenters are half-jokingly comparing the village to the disastrous Fyre Festival.
