  1. I’m not surprised that Gruden is a dirtbag or that he’s foolish enough to put his terrible worldview in writing through an official and easily accessible medium. That’s no surprise, but why so chatty over email?
  2. A rising tide lifts all boats; with no boats, there would be no need for a rising tide; removing the boats would eliminate the rising tide. QED
  3. Just so we’re clear by this logic, inter-species romance is ok as long as it’s opposite sex. So if I’m lonely and my dog starts looking appealing, it’s ok as long as my dog is female; otherwise, it’s gay.
  4. Oh, I'll take a vet over an MD any day. They gotta be able to cure a lizard, a chicken, a pig, a frog all on the same day.
  5. Anti-vax trolls that want to play the God/Jesus card should remember that the wisdom from above is “first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.” If you’re claiming a position of faith and batting below the Mendoza line in checking those boxes, you might want to reflect on the source of your wisdom.
  6. *According to whom?
  7. We need to run the TD play or the 8:00 minute TD drive play.
  8. Did we withstand the surge?
  9. Streameast.live is really reliable. You have to click through some things but the streams are always good.
  10. That Flynn plagiarized satanic prayer thing is a deep cut. That’s the kind of education that keeps me coming back here. Honestly, the seven rays and legion thing are the least satanic sounding parts of that prayer.
  11. It’s fair to distinguish between CRT as an academic term and CRT as a popular term. The problem is that popular CRT is based on a false reality, not simply a misunderstanding of or different definition from academic CRT. Popular CRT rips academic language entirely from its context to make it say anything and everything, makes up and exaggerates stories about what is taught in schools, and mixes it all up into a moral panic to create this impenetrable web of grievances. It’s anger in search of a cause. The anti-CRT arguments simply create a false intellectual basis to justify the pre-existing anger. It convinces parents to advocate against the education of their children, which is madness. The things anti-CRT advocates claim are happening in schools aren’t an accurate reflection of reality. In a country this size, you can surely find examples of anything, but that doesn’t mean that those examples are a reflection of what is broadly happening. That assumes that those examples are fairly and accurately reported, which is rare. There’s also a disconnect with the meaning of the word teach. This discussion uses the word “teach” in almost religious tones — the Catholic Church teaches transubstantiation; Mrs. Sweeterson’s 6th grade social studies classes teaches world religions. Those should carry very different connotations regarding the level of advocacy, but they are often treated as the same when race and culture are involved. A teacher could (they largely don’t, but they could) teach CRT — whatever that actually means — without ever advocating for all the things (falsely) attributed to it. It’s just a tool for understanding our culture, not a religious belief. You can teach a perspective without advocating for or against that perspective. To argue otherwise is to embrace the wokiest parts of cancel culture.
  12. My wife really wanted the sock, so we used it pretty religiously for the first year. It went off two times in the middle of the night, which two times led to a panicked race to wake up a confused and annoyed kid. Once the fit was right, it didn’t really fall off that much and it seemed to work pretty easily. I didn’t find it all that annoying It’s pretty expensive, but I guess it might be worth it if it helps a parent turn off that lizard brain fear that something terrible will happen in the night. If it brings a little more sanity into the house, it’s good; stay away if it seems like a source for more madness. I could see it going either way.
  13. Education is political in the sense that it’s a public good as well as the sense that a good education engages that culture, which is inherently political. It shouldn’t be partisan and it’s severely damaged when partisan actors make it into another battleground. Education is increasingly become a partisan battleground, largely thanks to the actions of dishonest self-proclaimed conservatives and those they dupe. It’s bad for everyone, including the angry conservative marks who have become experts on CRT or whatever the latest boogie man becomes based on an education provided by their pastor, Facebook, and right-wing media. It hurts them and their children (to the extent that they have children). That North Carolina American-hagiography is just the latest example of this madness.
  14. What kind of odds can I get on Charlie Strong winning a Super Bowl this year?
  15. My local hospital is finally below 100% capacity for the first time since July. The ICU is still 100% full of unvaccinated COVID patients. I’m personally not all the worried about catching another breakthrough case and having it go bad, but I am a bit concerned about receiving sufficient medical care for my family in the event of some other medical emergency. I’d also prefer the person caring for me or my family to not have the stress of a constant 2-year crisis, one that is now preventable. That seems bad for all of us. I don’t worry about drunk drivers getting me drunk; I worry about them crashing into me.
  16. Petition to change the thread title to: man finds himself after night of heavy drinking.
  17. With the very non-American "jabs" rather than "shots" entering the anti-vaccine lexicon, that's just another bit of evidence that this whole movement is being spurred on by foreign actors. Somewhat related: https://www.relevantmagazine.com/culture/tech-gaming/almost-all-of-facebooks-top-christian-pages-are-run-by-foreign-troll-farms/ Also somewhat related: https://www.technologyreview.com/2021/09/16/1035851/facebook-troll-farms-report-us-2020-election/
  18. We should punt more often
  19. I think most of us have a pretty good idea of what the Catholic Church will let priests get away with.
  20. Ethos is Greek, so ethi would be a false latinization (same as octopi). Greek plurals would be ethe or ethea. Tell me you don’t roll coal without telling me you don’t roll coal.
  21. Obviously drivers shouldn’t endanger others on the road and at least from the article, the kid deserves some consequences. But cyclist vs. aggressive diesel pickup truck is a conflict between probably the two biggest menaces on the road. Whenever there’s a dangerous situation, there’s a good chance at least one of the two are involved.
  22. That “mushroom where it happened” line is pretty clever.
  23. One of my colleagues will work a sample problem on the board right before a test (and leave it up on the whiteboard), give out the test with the same sample problem (still up on the board), and then laugh at all the students who miss it.
  24. I’m genuinely surprised that he didn’t label both.
