  1. just saw that google lists guzzi up in alpine as permanently closed. that sucks, place was good every time i ate there and was one of the few places that was consistently open.
  2. yes, just take it slow and you'll be fine.

    Texas BBQ

this has been my experience as well
  4. think i bought their entire discography for like $20 in college and rediscovered them during the pandemic. all of their albums are pretty bleak with depressing lyrics but there's a refreshing honesty to them as well. really feels like someone exercising their demons. all of the songs have interesting arrangements and great production. think i appreciate them more now than when i discovered them. have that same turntable that i also bought off craigslist, but from a guy in pflugerville.
  5. Dark beer weather. Delicious.
  6. Flaming Lips were way better than the last couple of times I've seen them. Played 2 sets...Yoshimi in its entirety then another hour and a half of songs. As always it was a visual spectacle, and it was mostly the same stuff as the last time i saw them a decade ago. I did find it slightly distracting that all of the lyrics were on the giant screens, was like watching a concert with closed captioning...couldn't help but read them. Wayne Coyne still can't really sing and is a real applause whore but he's likable and the band sounded great. Glad I went.
  7. flaming lips playing all of yoshimi tonight at acl moody. been a while since i've seen them.
  8. looks like he played a couple of concerts this year, lafayette and fayetteville. and there's this: https://www.pbs.org/video/hardly-sound-jandek-preview/
  9. for those in austin looking for WS gear...academy didn't have shit and dick's still had plenty of shirts and hats around noon.
  10. saw jandek in 2005 at the scottish rite theater in austin. read about him in college and one of my buddies ordered like 50 albums for $50 and we still listen to 1 every year on a roadtrip to colorado. most of it really isn't even music. the live show was exactly what you would expect, fucking weird. i read an account from the backing band at one of his gigs and they basically said they didn't even meet him until right before the show and he just told them to improvise.
  11. marfa burrito is average at best, have never understood the hype. it's a place you have to eat because nowhere else is open.

  13. djunah- chick on guitar/vocals and a dude on drums. they had some interesting songs and her voice was good at times, they were kind of all over the place in terms of style. interested to check out what their studio work sounds like. rickshaw billies burger patrol- still the best live band in austin. played several new songs that were super short and heavy. new album "big dumb riffs" coming out in february. crowd showed up for them despite the rain/cold. pigs pigs pigs pigs pigs pigs pigs- english psych/doom metal. lead singer was engaging and had good energy. i prefer their newer songs that are shorter..the old stuff drones on a bit much but they were good.
  14. Militarie Gun- too much blink 182 for me. Not enjoyable in the slightest. Amyl and the sniffers- insane energy as always. Crowd was nuts. Great set. Ghost funk orchestra- psychedelic jazz/soul. Vocalist was great and the horn section killed it.
  15. High on Fire and Uncle Acid were both loud as fuck. Had never seen either of these bands, was a good night.
  16. ecstatic vision- they were trying really hard to be the stooges but they sucked. a lot of noise. dead meadow- been a while since i've seen them. didn't blow me away but they were solid and definitely have their own blues/psych sound. felt like the vocals were kind of buried compared to other times i've seen them.

went last weekend and it was good. thought the dishes were more interesting than aba. the menu was confusing and didn't really give a great description of what you were getting...we got one thing that ended up being a fish taquito. we sat outside but the inside did seem very loud and the service was quite slow...we were there for over 2 hours with a table of 5.
  18. won tickets to dead meadow on thursday night so i guess i'm doing 4 nights in a row of levitation.
  19. she was only around for the 1st album. my understanding is that she didn't really know how to play any instruments and just memorized what keys to press for those songs. she's still friends with the band, i think she might be a photographer now.
  20. as much as i love the black angels, they have a history of playing my least favorite songs from their albums. i always enjoy it but leave thinking that it could have been much better with different songs. personal preference though, i get it.

  23. i was at the fair when the shit went down on saturday night, it was pretty wild. we were in the midway by the ferris wheel and suddenly a stampede of screaming people was running towards us. immediately assumed it was a shooting and we ducked behind a coupon booth while all the panicked people ran past. we didn't hear any gunshots and the panic died down after a few minutes...but then the sirens went off over the PA and it started all over again. we couldn't hear the announcement from the PA due to all the screaming so i have no idea what they said. there were people still riding all of the rides and the screams from the people on the rides would periodically set off another stampede of people thinking something was happening. police helicopter was circling the whole time. eventually we found a cop and he told us it was safe but everyone should evacuate. definitely got the adrenaline pumping for a few minutes. the aftermath of abandoned wagons, baby strollers, midway prizes, etc was post apocalyptic looking.
