  1. watched the documentary yesterday. never would have considered steely dan yacht rock (and still don't). but i think that's mainly because i like steely dan and consider most of the other bands in the doc to be...not good. by the time they got to the de la soul stuff i was bored, but it was mostly entertaining.
  2. this one's been stuck in my head all week...
  3. saw james mcmurtry solo acoustic on wednesday night at the continental club gallery. obviously he can turn a phrase but his guitar chops are also impressive. mostly played a 12 string but also busted out the 8 string and 6 string for a few songs. man, that 12 string sounded good. played two 45 minutes sets.
  4. Good to see they finally opened the new lot. The last couple of times i've gone to cattail the barricade at the end of that road was closed.
  5. That road and parking lot has been closed for years. You have to park on Ross Maxwell these days, making it an even longer hike.
  6. here's a good interview with stan lynch, benmont tench, and mike campbell. campbell's comments about howie epstein are interesting. sounds like stan was the whipping boy of the group, or at least he saw it that way. https://rockcellarmagazine.com/tom-petty-and-the-heartbreakers-long-after-dark-mike-campbell-benmont-tench-stan-lynch-interview/
  7. the bonus material on the long after dark deluxe release is good.
  8. wore hiking boots when i was there last month and had no issues, even ate at a few fancyish places. no one seemed to care about dress code.

    Texas BBQ

hit up 2 places over the weekend 1. bcooper bbq on manor. it's a food truck in the back of a pickleball club...that should've been enough of a red flag i guess. brisket was dry af and tough, lots of unrendered fat. same story with the baby back ribs, tough and dry. would not go back. 2. mum foods. had the pastrami and some pork ribs. pastrami was very good but the pork ribs were remarkably delicious. perfectly cooked and great bark. some of the best ribs i've had in a long time.
  10. the "pop up" style of drain stopper that seems to be prevalent these days where you have to stick your hand into the dirty sink water in order to release the stopper. this is not an improvement.
  11. he really seems like the eric clapton of his generation in this regard.
  12. saw the black crowes last night at acl live. say what you will about chris robinson but he still sounds great and puts 100% into the show. rich seemed as unamused as ever. they were good but i don't think i need to see them again any time soon.
  13. i'm curious about that because there were several blank stars in prime spaces. i'm sure somebody used to have a star there. maybe they didn't pay their rent.

    Vinyl

i had no idea this existed until finding it in the new arrivals bin at amoeba. definitely has a steely dan demos feel. not as polished or complex as their later work but still interesting.
  15. unintentionally visted the tp&hb star on the walk of fame while in hollywood for the gilmour concert. would like to know exactly how that thing got cracked.
  16. this is true for most audiophile equipment
  17. damn, just read that la kiva closed again at the end of july with no plans to reopen. sounds like the place was a money pit.
  18. levitation next year will be sep 25-28. other than the consistently great lineup, the cool weather and halloween vibes were the best things they had going. maybe there's a great reason but i don't understand the move.
  19. it's not like pizza and beer is a unique idea, but it's truly amazing how much pinthouse ripped off pizza port. from the picnic tables and arcade games to the ocean theme and children running around everywhere. it was like being in austin except in san diego.

    Pink Floyd

i settled on this one just because it's so incredibly weird...and it has the hollywood bowl dates on the back. the rest of them looked like they were designed in a junior high photoshop class.

    Pearl Jam

finally found PJ20 on vinyl at amoeba hollywood for a resonable price. i love that record store, always have to set my spending limit before i walk in the door.
  22. Levitation: Thursday: Mdou Moctar: basically a taureg jamband. they were fine, didn't do much for me. Black Angels: i've been a bit underwhelmed the past couple of times i've seen them but this was a really good set. played all of phosphene dream plus some others. sound was great and the new bass player fit in really well. Friday: Death Valley Girls: completely different lineup than the last time i saw them 6 months ago. they no longer have a guitarist and instead have a saxophone playing the guitar leads. they also added a trio of backup singers. it is not an improvement. thought they were borderline bad with this new lineup. Osees: great as always. so much energy. Saturday: Iguana Death Cult: garage rock/psych from rotterdam. they were very high energy and quite good. reminded me of the viagra boys. their drummer was excellent. Wine Lips: more garage punk/psych with strong osees vibes. fun set. Sunday: The Well: local power trio with sabbath-like riffs and a good dark sound. played a couple of new songs, hopefully a new album soon. Rickshaw Billies Burger Patrol: was great to see them on the big stage at stubb's and clearly a lot of fans turned out. crowd was going nuts during this set. still think they're the best live band in austin. Pentagram: it's a cool backstory but i'm not really into them. they were fine but dragged on a bit. The Sword: hell yes. hope this wasn't just a one off show for them. they rip so fucking hard.

    Pink Floyd

yeah i was at the show on the 29th. the acoustic addition at the end of high hopes was awesome. sorrow was also incredible. loved when he busted out the lap steel for great gig. knew going in that fat old sun would be the highlight and it definitely was. the crowd in my section was really good and quiet. man, he had some terrible merch.
  24. phil & friends at bonnaroo 2002 is really what got me into the dead. immediately downloaded a shitload of GD shows after that weekend and went down that rabbit hole for a long time. don't listen to them as much these days but still good for a few sessions a year, and tonight will be one of them. thanks, phil.
