  1. They were going to lose that fight anyway. Republicans aren't going to vote for those subsidies.
  2. They really, really, really want to protect the filibuster. Sad!
  3. Maybe the public will start treating Trump's America like an emergency. Probably after football season.
  4. How did you think it was going to play out. Two more weeks? Through Thanksgiving? Christmas? The Republicans would have passed it without Democrats anyway. That's what I wanted to happen.
  5. Me? I'm not OK with it. I do, however, understand it. They were always going to lose. The government was going to open with or without them. They chose with.
  6. Also, the internet is the worst.
  7. Decent breakdown if you want to understand more of the politics.
  8. Good article. I love Harper's.
  9. Here's all you need to know. The people who are most pissed off at the Democrats right now are Democratic voters. They are extremely online and well-informed. They know you're pissed, but what are you gonna do about it, vote for a Republican? A third party candidate and throw away your vote? Nah. You know how this country works. You're gonna vote for Democrats. Because you're trapped in a duopoly. Murica.
  10. They want them to renege. That's part of the strategery.
  11. I vote. That's all they're ever going to get.
  12. It means legislation needs 60 votes to get to the floor. Both parties love that power when they are in the minority.
  13. They won big on Tuesday and kept the issue in play for next November. From a purely political standpoint, they didn't get nothing.
  14. They can't without Republican votes.
  15. They were going to lose this fight no matter what. Being in the minority sucks.
  16. More cynicism alert: that is great news for Democrats up in November. For Americans, not so much.
  17. Yeah, but the sad truth is, they were going to lose no matter what. The government was going to open with or without them.
  18. And they get to own it for a whole year. From a purely cynical standpoint, Democrats never wanted those subsidies to pass. Now they can run on it.
  19. They were never going to get anything. They got through last Tuesday, won big, and now they have the healthcare issue saved for the next election. Oh, and they saved the filibuster, which is very, very, very important to senators. Isn't politics fun?
  20. They know it's going to fail. They want it as an issue for the mid-terms.
  21. This will be, too. Democrats were never going to win on the subsidies. The government was going to open with or without them. Now they can take partial credit for getting SNAP back to families who need it and for getting federal workers paid. They also get to keep healthcare as an issue for the mid-terms. That's the political thinking anyway.
  22. Not for nothing. They cleaned up last Tuesday.
