  1. Before we're all too quick to pass judgement, I'd like to remind y'all that many of you also flagged Javonne Shepherd as a character risk.
  2. Where's O'Neal?
  3. In the second half, I was definitely thinking it's a good thing sark actually means it when he says we won't let up on offense. Everything about the tech game followed a Tom Herman script except that we didn't turtle up when we got up a couple of touchdowns. Little doubt in my mind that if Herman had coached that game we would've ended up tied 35-35 in the 4th with tech having all the momentum from their comeback and us hoping that Dicker could save us with 48 yd attempt as time expired.
  4. Patterson is a good coach and knows their fans are obsessed with beating Texas. They had a bye just before smu and came out looking completely flat and unprepared. Recall that Arkansas looked completely flat against rice, and it has been stated here that they started prep for Texas during the rice week. While I get that smu is a dfw rival, Gary gets that his ceiling is winning the big 12, which beating smu does not help you do. All that to say, they will be ready for us and it's at their house. I say all of that is good. I want to play against a well coached team and see how we do. Were rice and tech just really that bad, or have we really improved that much? Hopefully tcu will help start to answer the question ahead of the rrs.
  5. Hell, other than Florida last season, I've mostly heard them celebrate regular season losses. I'm not sure they've been as proud of any wins as they were of staying within 2 tds of bama and Clemson for a couple of years.
  6. Yeah, but we all no Bama's defense isn't exactly up to Colorado's standard, soooooo...
  7. They've positioned it as bring in both briles Sr and Jr for a period so briles Sr can set things up and hand them off. They've said these things as though bringing in briles Sr only for a short transition period somehow makes it a less disgusting choice. Thankfully their admin will never, ever go for this. You fired your most successful coach ever for supposedly locking a kid in a dark closet for a little while. You can't really go from that to ignoring briles past.
  8. Just a reminder that Jimbo publicly said this summer that they're going to kick bama's ass, and that Saban was so concerned about it that he ran to the portal looking to fix his broken team. I cannot wait for this epic showdown. I'm sure Saban hasn't leveraged any of this for bulletin board material/extra motivation.
  9. "He's still our guy because of the contract" is going to be the aggy mantra for years to come. "Ran out of buyout money" might be the first accurate usage of "ran out of x" ever by aggy.
  10. aggy would prefer not talk about the moxie of case McCoy.
  11. Because I hurt my foot and I'm not allowed to leave bed this weekend so I have nothing better to do, I broke down his critical comments on offense and defense below. It's roughly paraphrased from only his opening comments (I'm not listening to all of it). Shades of Mack Brown defending Greg Davis when the offense was clearly the bigger issue. They held Arkansas to 20 pts and only scored one touchdown, and most of the blame seems to fall on the defense not helping enough with field position despite not letting them score much. If I'm Elko, I'm taking all of the calls right now. Critical comments on the offense: We get down to the 30 yard line with a shot at a good field goal, miss a block and lose 8-10 yards there Missed one block on a play we felt really good about We'd get to midfield and get stalled with a mistake or a penalty Critical comments on the defense: They were scoring hot, so it was important for us to match tds, fgs, or something We gave up too many big plays They had 300 yards in the first half We didn't tackle well They hit big plays They had 7 completions and 212 yards Had three scoring drives and went up 17-0 They made one nice stop on the 4th and 1 We didn't give up points in the second half but we were still giving up drives We had them pinned inside the 25, inside the 20, and we let them pick up some big first downs They'd punt it and we'd end up with a long field offensively We didn't feed off of each other and win the field position battle in the second half We could've shortened the field and got some more points
  12. Real question...with this new contract for Jimbo, if they continue to crater, what options do they really have? Does he have any reason whatsoever to walk away with less than what they've guaranteed him? Why negotiate the most lopsided agreement in the history of sports unless you intend to hold those rubes to every last cent? When I heard they just extended Jimbo and gave him a raise, my best guess was that they had to in order to modify the contract to at least be laughably equitable. Nope. Just gave him more guaranteed money and time with the same terrible terms. Do they really have any choice but to ride this out given what they've put on the table? How hard is fsu laughing at aggy right now?
  13. Highlight of the post, IMO: So, paraphrasing: During a period of rampant cheating we actually experienced some success, but that immediately stopped when the cheating was punished. Had the rampant cheating been allowed to continue, we could've really been something. Never change, aggy.
  14. Just fucking perfect. Even if he does sound more like Boomhauer than Milton, this is still just way too appropriate.
  15. That'll do. Still some work to do on defense, but if you were looking for clear improvement as a team from game 2 to game 4, not sure you need to see much more to feel optimistic. Yes, our next two games will be better opponents than tech, but we don't need to win them all by 35. These coaches are doing work and it's showing up. Now let's just shore up that defense and we'll be rolling.
  16. Play calling. Rollouts, screens, misdirections, QB runs, run plays that don't run directly into the worst parts of our line on fourth down... Basically try anything to help a struggling line...most of which we decided not to do against Arkansas for reasons that I'll never understand. A weak oline is going to be a challenge no matter what, but you can certainly try to minimize the impact by anticipating they'll struggle with concepts they've shown they can't execute. Changing out personnel would be high on my list as well, but we've seen the depth chart so my hopes aren't high for that.
  17. I'm not sure if we'll win given we've been incredibly inconsistent, however if we lose the Sarkisian honeymoon period will 100% be over. There are a lot of reasons you could rationalize the Arkansas loss: perfect environment for them at home for their super bowl, card not playing well in his first true road start, coordinators still tinkering with what we can/can't execute well in our second noncon game, etc. Lose this game at home to tech after seeing and having time to coach around our obvious deficiencies, and it will become clear we're in for a real rough time in conference this year. It will also cast serious doubt on whether this staff has improved the team over where Herman left us. I don't particularly care about beating tech, but I care about beating tech as a signal that we've improved from game 2 to game 4 and have a chance to compete with the better teams in conference.
  18. Texas may not be coming back, but Taylor Hamm sure as hell will be coming back... next week, to clean and add chemicals to the pool.
  19. No, but I did wonder how long he's been waiting to use his super clever "from Alabama with love" line for Keilan Robinson. You could tell he was very proud of himself for it
  20. Thanks for sharing. Haven't watched any of their games. Saw lots of pressure from their dline, so this will be a better gauge of line improvement than rice was. Also saw a more aggressive passing attack, which makes sense from cumbie and is a test our defense hasn't really faced yet this year. I can't bring myself to expect the mudhole predictions being thrown around here, given Arkansas is the only team we've played so far with legit P5 talent and they ate our lunch. I'm excited for this game mainly as a measuring stick for how much we've improved since that game, both players and coaches, building off of the weaknesses revealed. If we look great against tech, I can start getting excited about competing with TCU, and possibly ou. If we see the same issues we had with Arkansas popping up, it's going to be a long season in conference play.
  21. We pitched a shutout and the only posts in the defense thread are bitching. They're not wrong, either.
  22. Obligatory "don't sell her short" joke.
  23. When coaches take over a flailing program, they say it's not really their own team until year 4. I assume you can say the same for when coaches take over a dominant team. It really is bizarre how extremely talented this team is and how much they're struggling. I'm sure there's an Oregon hangover, and they'll certainly run away with this one at some point just due to depth, but Day has some work to do this season.
  24. It's kind of like assuming Texas will have a horrible oline every year. If history repeats itself enough times, you start to assume it will continue to be true until proven otherwise, even if it feels improbable.
