  1. I wanted us to go for two, but I also thought there was a higher probability of Rattler turning it over in some disastrous way than Sam.
  2. If every up and coming coach at a small program translated that succuss at P5 programs, we'd have a lot more top tier coaches. For every Saban, Dabo, Meyer, there's 10+ who pan out more like Sumlin, Herman, or Strong. It's why I think we can't dip into the star on the rise well again. We need to go after someone who's already made the jump successfully.
  3. You could write a similar list of reasons why Urban isn't coming. I hope it's him, but odds are probably against it. If it's not Urban, I'll stand by thinking Patterson is at least a good option. All of the pressure you mention at tcu is as much a reason as any to consider it. If you're under pressure at little old tcu, you might as well look. In how many past searches has cdc been involved in trying to bring him in? Have to think that could have an impact. He's not perfect, but after Meyer the list goes downhill pretty quickly. Cristobal probably isn't leaving Oregon, dabo and saban arent even worth discussing, and I'm not as enamored with malzahn, mullen, and franklin as some. Personally I'd rather have someone who knows Texas and knows our conference, hence my interest in Patterson if the dream candidates don't emerge.
  4. Seen him mentioned a few times, but can someone who knows, convince me his resume isn't similar to Strong and Herman at the time when we hired both? Up and comers seem I'll prepared for the pressures of Texas. I want someone with P5 experience and success. No more promising up and comers we hope work out.
  5. Just ignore, he's aggy and quite possibly Figurelli.
  6. I'll play along. First, I'm all in on Meyer. I'm irrationally convinced this whole thing, down to Ash and Yurcich hirings, set us up perfectly for this to happen. But he very well could tell us no, so... Had a conversation with someone earlier today about who is realistic if we can't get Urban, and if there's no one clearly better would we actually just keep Herman as the devil we know. I'm not a huge fan of his style as a person, but I'll submit Gary Patterson for consideration. Reasons for: He knows the conference and how to defend it. He punches above his weight (joke fully intended) in recruiting and is solid with talent/fit evaluations. While it used to be a fault, these days he has been proactive with his coaching staff changes where needed to address deficiencies. His teams are the anti texas - they play above their recruiting rankings and compete against better athletes due to excellent fundamentals and scouting/scheme. He's won conferences before where he had talent parity or advantage, and only hasn't when he has a clear athlete disadvantage. He has a good working relationship with cdc which can't hurt. Reasons against: He looks, sweats, and complains like a third trimester pregnant woman. Again, I'm all in on Meyer, but if he's a no, we could do worse than Patterson.
  7. Oh, I know you're right, but it won't stop me from rationalizing that they just don't want to announce until Urban's deal is done and that's the only reason we haven't heard the news yet.
  8. I don't feel like it should take three weeks to pack up an office, but if that's what it takes so be it.
  9. All fair, but just recognize that when your barometer of success/failure is making the playoffs, you've got some first class problems that we'd love to have. Also, whatever system he runs sure as hell seems to work.
  10. Should we just change the title to "gtfo" now? I think the winning part has been put to bed.
  11. Man, you're out of your element here, Donnie. What Texas fans wouldn't give for minor quibbles on player utilization on the way to a 12-1 record and #4 ranking to be the primary gripes we have about our coaching over the last 5 years. Rough life, I'm sure.
  12. Sigh. Mea culpa. If you don't think it could have been a serious question, though, I'd like to introduce you to our fan base sometime.
  13. Not sure if serious, but... If I remember right, he had some serious staff turnover to work through and also some investment issues we were committing to make good. Both of those are now resolved for him and we're a much bigger clusterfuck than we were then. Really no reason for him to make that jump. I have no idea if any of the above is at all true or pure 9.95 fiction, but I believe that was the story at the time.
  14. I would actually like to know what the statistics say about the likelihood of a coach with Tom's track record at this point in his tenure ever winning anything meaningful. CDC should call Herman in for a conversation and have a binder with those stats ready to reference. After all, you can't really argue with the binder.
  15. I'll contribute to anything we choose to go with, but the focus should be on ousting Herman, not Urban Meyer. I want Urban as much as anyone on this board, but don't conflate the issues. Herman needs to go.
  16. Honestly it was obvious when we couldn't push around utep. I rationalized it as us choosing to focus on breaking in a new receiver group, but clearly we're just incapable of moving anyone off the ball.
  17. They were also subbing in inexperienced guys in favor of trying to get more height against our receivers. The price you should make them pay for that is confusing their inexperience to create mistakes. Instead, we did nothing to make them pay for it, ran simple routes right at them, and allowed their height to offset the advantage we were hoping to create. I imagine both Grinch and Riley were shocked how much our strategy just played right into rewarding the risk they took.
  18. The given reason was a tweak in warm ups. It did happen the day after he supposedly wiped a bunch of Texas stuff from his social media. Who the fuck knows at this point.
  19. Because instead we can try for a low percentage 40 yard pass to Robinson on 3rd and 1 at a critical moment in the game, obviously.
  20. Imagine going 5 wide with Whittington, Moore, Smith, Eagles, and Schooler. Whittington can sub back to rb if needed, since he knows the position, or you could trade in Robinson and have him play rb or flex out where he's a reasonably good pass catcher. Sam can rush as needed, into lighter boxes thanks to the spread. I'm sure the main argument against this pass first approach is that our oline is swiss cheese, but how much have the extra blocking surfaces really helped with that? Also, is there a reason we hate trying to use screens, flushes, or misdirection to slow down the rush? They seem like such obvious solutions to our oline problems and yet we never really try them.
  21. He fixes the c̶a̶b̶l̶e̶ p̶l̶u̶m̶b̶i̶n̶g̶ Texas head coach?
  22. He should start asap, but only on evaluations and recruiting, nothing involving game coaching. By the end of this season, he'd know what he's dealing with from a staff and personnel standpoint, and have already impacted 21/22 classes. That's the best case scenario.
  23. I'm being serious, and there are some reasons starting Meyer right away would be a bad idea, but transfer portal fear feels really low on that list. Now, my opinion on this changes a ton if it's pretty much anyone other than Meyer. If it's him, it's to your advantage to announce it and get him involved asap. If it's not, you play things much differently/more cautiously.
  24. Eh, coaches have said they intend to stay with a school "for a long time" hours before being fired or taking a job elsewhere. What else can they say?
  25. Hey guys, we're firing Tom Herman and replacing him with Urban Meyer. No wait, please, don't everyone rush for the transfer portal at once. Isn't anyone going to stay?
