I hear you. It's fucking hard. I'm at breakdown point basically all the time right now because of the fear and uncertainty going on around. I have some faith, potentially misguided, that we'll get financial assistance programs to those most in need. I'm mostly worried about whether they'll come quickly enough or not. Either way I know that lots of people are already feeling this in a very tangible way and we need people who can help to try to help wherever they can until the government actually provides systematic relief. I have two little kids and read something about how young kids won't likely remember much about the details of coronavirus, but they may remember what your house was like over these months. That's really the thing that's rallying my family right now, is we're committed to making this something that when our kids learn about later in life, they'll say they had no idea how bad things were or the stress we were under at the time. Sometimes it's easier to hold it together for someone else than for yourself.

I'm the midst of all this madness, there are some things coming out that remind you that people, and people acting as companies, can be at their best in trying times like this. I've seen things like quest offering free internet to any kids expected to do home learning who don't have net, and zoom making their enterprise solution available to schools for free. In Frisco, one guy started a fb group designed to help at risk folks get supplies, and there are now hundreds of volunteers with the city broken up until zones being covered (it is now expanding into all of North Texas). My own personal experience started with my work today, where the first thing they said on our leadership call (all remote as everyone is now wfh) is that we're obviously evaluating business impact and how to plan for this new normal, but leaders should focus first on their people and themselves personally and make sure everyone is personally doing ok and make unusual allowances for people where needed. Then we forced my 67 yo MIL to call into the child care center where she works and tell them that she really can't come in for a while. They're staying open for now, so we figured they'd fire her. Instead, they told her they understand and offered her a leave of absence with the option to come back when things settle down. Most amazingly they apparently called a couple of the oldest ladies who work there over the weekend and told them they should not try to come back for a while for their own safety. It's a strange world to wake up to right now. Most days I'm awake for only a minute or so before I remember what's happening. In the middle of that, nice to see some real signs of human goodness happening.

For those of us with the young kids, what are you planning to do while they're home? My wife and I have been making a list, so wanted to share here in case others have ideas that we should add on our list. We are taking this really seriously (thank goodness she came around, she was pissed at my suggesting she stop taking the kids to play dates until I made her read articles about Italy and how it spreads). Our kids are 1.5 and 4. Here are our ideas: - My wife got a bunch of craft stuff, so she'll do some kind of craft every day with them - I just bought the 4 year old a couple of soccer goals for the yard and a football, once it stops raining it's time for him to learn the games - Our almost 2 year old is way behind on speech development, so we're going to work with him on new words every day - He also has recently started taking interest in us going to the bathroom, could we come out of quarantine with two potty trained? - I bought the 4 year old an Xbox with Kinect and introduced him to his first video games this weekend. Trying not to show him any that aren't Kinect/active play for now. I know the time will come... - The 4 year old is really close to being able to read. We don't want to buy any books and have them delivered right now, so we'll find online beginning reading stuff for him to read on the tablet - Both kids like their bikes/trikes, so we'll do daily walks in the evening with them and the dog once this rain eventually clears - We just got a bunch of games at Christmas like connect 4 and operation, so I expect those will get some good use. As for the wife and me, we're looking at projects around the house we've been putting off that we might as well do when we're stuck here. Cleaning out closets, fixing things that need a little love, and boring stuff like that. We also have been trying to learn some new stuff, foreign languages, instruments, etc. No better time than now. We're looking at what we can do for date nights to keep from getting beat down. Grilling steaks and opening an expensive wine instead of going out. We both like board games as well and have some we haven't brought out in a while. Plenty of series we've meant to binge and never have. We've also already been on a home workout routine, and it will be hard to argue we don't have time to keep up with that now. This all might sound a bit ambitious, and maybe it is. I'd rather have plans for what we want to do with the time. Otherwise I think we'll go crazy, or worse, not stick to the self quarantine. We're going in with the mindset that this is a few months not a few weeks. I don't think this will be done quickly, so we can take our time on this stuff. Would love to hear other ideas any of you have, particularly for the kids. This won't be an easy time, but I'm focused on coming out the other side feeling like we made the best use of the time we could rather than laid around lazy and wasted a few months.

There's a girl on my FB who pretty regularly posts pictures of herself on her couch with a glass of wine on weekend nights saying things like "lazy kind of Saturday." Last night she posted pictures out with a group of friends in Dallas and added the hashtag #socialdistancing. I swear some people are intentionally going out right now just because they've been told they shouldn't.

My MIL is in her mid 60s and works at a childcare center that is not only staying open but starting to accept drop ins from kids out of school. I understand that this is very necessary when you consider people who don't have the option the stay home, particularly healthcare professionals and emergency services. That said, we made her call in Friday and she will be telling them on Monday that she will either take an extended leave or she will quit, their choice. We've already told her we'll either cover her rent and expenses or break her lease and have her move in. I do not take that statement lightly as there are few things I'd probably rather have happen less. One of those few things but is having her catch this at her age and health, so here we are.

My 4 yo has had a hacking, dry cough for about the last 10 days that I would really like to go away. I take his temp about 3x day just to be sure, but totally normal. He also seems fine, other than a bit tired some days from the coughing at night. Your kid having a persistent cough while this stuff is going around is no bueno.

That's the kind of great, substantive reply that deserves a well thought explanation. I'm not claiming to have the answer on how to set up the infrastructure to support extended isolation if that's actually the best answer for preserving as much life as possible. I'm simply saying we should find the best plan to stop the spread and preserve life, and then put all resources against how to make that happen. Any other decision is consciously choosing to prioritize comfort, stability, finances/the economy, etc over life which just isn't how I would approach the problem. Clearly you disagree, so carry on bitching now and I'll step out.
-
I get that. My question was more if there are problems being caused by unwarranted hysteria. Yes, there will be lots of issues, many economic, with this. I'm just not pretending there are preferable alternatives. How people weigh priority of financial concerns and protecting public health will be interesting to observe as this goes on.
-
How? Other than being annoyed by people talking about this or buying all of the tp, what is the problem being created? I'm not being sarcastic, I genuinely don't see the tangible problem being created here. Also, if it seems worse right now, hang on a week or two and that perspective will change. I generally disagree with most of this. We absolutely can isolate for an extended period of time. It's not normal, and would require some pretty unique programs between governments, banks, businesses, etc, but simply dismissing that as possible is wrong. If that is literally the only way to contain this until a vaccine or other solution is found, we should 100% be focused on how to make that reality work rather than why that reality isn't feasible. I think trying to find answers to this within the context of what we consider normal day to day life is a mistake. The best answers to this will likely involve shaking up day to day life in ways that will feel abnormal and uncomfortable for potentially an extended period of time.

Leon decided to run out of time a little early I guess

I live in Frisco and just read the comments on a local news story about the case discovered here. We are fucked. It's really frightening how ignorant most people here are about what is going on with this across the world. What's worse is the narrative that anyone encouraging changes in behavior to avoid catching and spreading this is gullible and caught up in the media frenzy. These people really believe there's nothing to see here, meanwhile other countries are implementing unprecedented quarantines of huge numbers of people. Any hope I had that this could be moderately contained here is just gone. Idiots are going to be idiots and make sure this thing spreads like crazy, and only once people they know start being impacted will they realize it was more than just the media. Unfortunately that will be about two weeks too late to hope to to anything about it. General lack of awareness about what goes on in the world has always been pretty embarrassing for a lot of Americans, and for once it's going to bite us in the ass. There's plenty of evidence to go off of at this point in terms of the severity of this, but reading these comments you wouldn't know it.

Long time ago, but my old band was scheduled for a CMJ festival showcase in NY in mid September 2001. Granted, unlike this there was really no doubt about whether that had to be shut down. I remember the surreal conversation confirming that it wasn't happening and we weren't going. As much excitement as there had been building up to it, by the time we talked about it officially being cancelled I'd forgotten it was even supposed to happen. Tell your kid not to worry, he won't make any less money making music now than he would have if he'd played the showcase.

They're just going to hang this in that spot now:

Yep, that's him

Even this works. Lots of talk. Nothing to back it up. Runs away seeking greener pastures when they can't win. See?
