My grandfather, the one who gave me the 1968 Riviera, was terrible at maintaining cars. Grandpa graduated from medical school in 1923, so even during The Great Depression he had money, or at least was paid in eggs, and meats and things. I even have a pool table from an old Pittsburgh pool hall because the owner needed to pay grandpa for a surgery.
Anyway, the Riviera was bought new and for some damned reason, at some point in the late ‘70s, the Great Earl Scheib painted a good portion of the car. Now, I think there was no attempt at matching what was a beautiful color, Olive Gold Metallic, which was only on the Riviera in ‘68, no other General Motors car.
Well, it was an absolutely horrible paint job and just looked like shit.
I got the car in high school, and like an ass I had the car painted black (ugh) and had the original vinyl top taken off. The original was lime green, very sharp with the Olive Gold. Thankfully, after I graduated from college, a few years after I had it all stripped and taken back to the original Olive Gold and found a sharp vinyl top, sort of a grey/slate color.
I have no idea how Earl Scheib ever grew past one location. It was awful.
