  1. It was directed at DalTx, and all the other posters who suggest more incarceration as the solution to gun violence every time there's some hint of something a shooter did or threatened years earlier, but was still a free man. It was not directed at you, and I'm sorry you lost your mother that way. Access to treatment for mental illness in this country is a disgrace. I'll just note I was responding to an article about vague threats the shooter apparently made in 2019, which were responded to by law enforcement, and presumably not mental health professionals Whether had he received adequate mental health care, including possibly involuntary commitment three years ago, would have made any sort of difference, I don't know. There's nothing in the reporting to date to suggest the shooter here had anything diagnosable on the DSM, as opposed to just being a horrible human being.
  2. Interesting that the same people who think every American has the right to concealed carry an AR-15, also thinks the solution is to throw people in prison for a vague threat to "kill everyone," presumably without any jury trial or evidence of an actual criminal statute that was violated.
  3. We're playing Calvin ball with the law that protects the rights of women and brown people. And you should buy AR-15's just in case we decide to also play Calvin ball to get rid of firearms, despite rulings that make clear we will gut the already existing gun control laws on the books. That's I guess the argument from your side on it. Cool cool.
  4. I have family that lives a few blocks from there. Fuck.
  5. I did one a few weeks ago on Celebrity. I don't think it's my preferred way to travel. A lot of people, and I really just wanted to stay in port and explore more. That said, scenery was gorgeous, it's hard to get to these parts of Alaska any other way, and it's hard to have a bad time hanging out with a group of friends on a ship with scenery, food, drinks, pools, etc. As others have said, avoid Carnival, although I have no personal point of comparison. I've also done a Nile cruise, which was amazing. But that was basically a floating hotel, with maybe 100 passengers, and most of the time spent in port at Luxor and Aswan, with just a few hours in transit.
  6. Even if he was armed so what. Or is the so called constitutional right to concealed carry only afforded to white people?
  7. Of course republicans won’t care. But why are dems letting them set the narrative. Make ginni testify under oath or take the 5th
  8. And apologies for the typos in this and my prior post. But gd autocorrect on my stupid fucking phone. But why aren’t they asking Kennedy about the pressure (blackmail?) for his resignation. Completing the fbi investigation on Kav that trump quashed and impeaching him. Possibly impeaching gorsuch for the stollen seat. The GQP is still screaming nonsense about Hunter Biden and the dems won’t even investigate known corruption that’s real.
  9. The dems should be pounding the table that Thomas must resign. They should have long ago subpoenaed Gianni about her role on 1-6 bad called on Clarence to testify about why he was still ruling on cases about 1-6. Hell, he should have been impeached the second that info came out. I get that the debate wouldn’t convict. But the dems should be yelling and screaming and holding these corrupt assholes feet to the fire. Make them Testify under oath about their corruption.
  10. Sure. But how's that rationally going to happen. The Dems get 2 more Senators, abolish the filibuster, and pass a law saying Marbury v. Madison was wrongly decided, and SCOTUS no longer has the power of judicial review? Good luck with that one.
  11. Why does it have to be one or the other? Congress is fucked up. It's filled with a bunch of wackos or checked out long termers in safe seats due to gerrymandering. I don't think anyone here disagrees with that. The Supreme Court is also fucked up and is rendering batshit decisions sounding in Calvin Ball.
  12. Yes, in part. But do you really want to get on a passenger jet that was certified for commercial flight based on guidelines developed by a group of laypeople that includes rocket surgeons such as MTG as opposed to engineers with flight experience at the FAA?
  13. Money and power. They keep making money, with no oversight of their fraud, and no regulations they have to follow. And they live in their private fortresses, without worries about the safety of their own tap water. Meanwhile, 2024 comes around, with air pollution, unsafe drinking water, no workplace safety measures, and on and on, and the rubes who are either brainwashed by Fox or paying attention only to the Depp/Heard trial but are pissed about their family being killed by toxic "medication" no longer subject to FDA approval, votes for the GQP, while other votes are being suppressed.
  14. It's not as obvious a point as with Roe, and a lot depends on how extreme SCOTUS is in its decision, though no reason to believe they won't burn down the government. But the executive's regulatory authority is huge currently, and most safety and health safeguards would potentially be gutted. For example and off the top of my head: Anything to do with the environment, emissions, pollution Workplace safety--OSHA and Div. of Labor safe food and medicine - the FDA EEOC And on and on. It'll be a shitshow.
  15. If you do head back to Chicago, there's a Holocaust museum just outside the city in Skokie, which I think is at least as good as the one in DC.
  16. And more ruined vacation plans. I was supposed to visit some family for the first time in ages over July 4th weekend, but they tested positive Monday. And then I made alternate plans to head to the beach with a friend, but she tested positive yesterday. Everyone fucking has it now.
  17. I spent a week in Quebec City and don't speak French and had no problems. I've also been to Montreal with no issues, but one of the friends I was with on that trip is from France
  18. Montreal and/or Quebec City Also, Florida in August will be brutal. I'd wait for the fall for that one.
  19. Most divisive president in our history.
  20. I still can't get over the fact that Dotard's SS code name was "Mogul." I mean I know he's a delusional narcissist, but wow.
  21. Huh. Weird that the House GOP thinks the Federal Rules of Evidence on admissibility in Federal trials somehow applies to Congressional testimony. Maybe we should take them up on this and have her testify in court. Are they conceding this is a criminal matter?
  22. I have such mixed feelings about this witness. She is clearly brave, and at 25-years-old showed more courage than anyone else in trumpworld. But she's also proud of her "legislative accomplishments" on behalf of the trump WH, presumably including such things as separating brown babies from their mothers and getting ACB on the Court. She's done some vile things that should transcend politics, had one of the "political parties" not gone completely off the rails in fascism.
