  1. They’re pretty close to this
  2. Yes. It's not like there's one magic moment where you abruptly transition from a free society to a fascist state. It's highly likely the 2022 and 2024 elections will not be free and fair. The rural areas have tons more voting power than where people live, already, and there's already extreme gerrymandering. We currently house about 20% of the world's prisoners, but have 4.2% of the world's population. We spend about as much on our military as the entire rest of the world combined. The only country with a higher budget for policing than us is China. And we have way more guns per capita than any other country in the world. I'm not sure why you think a fascist state looks different from that, other than noone is censoring facebook yet.
  3. 30% want a fascism. There's another 30% who will go along with the fascists for a (perceived) tax cut.
  4. You should renew before it expires. Most countries won't let you in unless you have at least 6 months remaining on the passport.
  5. Deeply disturbed by the adulation and attention this misguided kid who killed two people (whether criminally liable or not) is receiving.
  6. Quoting you, because there's no fucking way I'm quoting Sack. But absolutely it's the publicity that would be valuable. I have no doubt Rudy if he still has a law license or Lin Wood or some other nutjob would take this case on. But Kyle has no damages, unless he's claiming he didn't get enough money in his go fund me to pay for his criminal trial.
  7. Your list needs some Kavanaugh
  8. To clarify, Order things should have been done in: 1. 1/6 committee requests documents from National Archives by 11/12 at 6 pm 2. Trump files suit asserting executive privilege 3. Judge issues ruling, denying trump's assertions 4. Trump files motion before trial court to stay its decision pending an appeal 5. After stay is denied, file appeal of decision on the merits and appeal the denial of a stay pending appeal 6. Circuit court order on whether a stay is granted, and if not, then the documents will likely be released on 11/12 before the Circuit Court ever gets to a decision on the merits. If a stay is granted, then the National Archives can't release the documents until the appellate court decision on the executive privilege suit. Order things were done in: 1. 1/6 committee requests documents by 11/12 2. Trump files suit 3. Trump files motion before trial court seeking a stay of its decision, but the trial court hasn't issued its ruling yet. The trial court thus denies this nonsense motion. But it's not an actual decision on the merits, it's just an order saying basically why the fuck are you seeking a stay of an imaginary order that hasn't been entered yet. 4. Judge issues ruling. 5. Trump files appeal, including seeking a stay of the trial court ruling, but there was never a decision from the trial court on the stay issue, other than the one that was denied because it was filed before a decision was rendered. So there's no order to appeal from regarding the stay, and the appellate court can only hear issues that were litigated below. So while there's an appeal pending before the Circuit Court, it's highly unlikely they will decide the issues before Friday, and trump hasn't properly sought to stay the trial court decision such that the National Archives won't just release the documents on Friday anyway, mooting the entire lawsuit. 6. Trump seeks a stay from the trial court of its decision. If nothing else, trump's legal team must be pissing off the law clerks.
  9. It may have been intentional, because none of this makes sense, but they had the motion ready to go. Hell, they filed it prematurely before the decision, and it was denied already because of the incorrect filing. So they (1) made the judge rule on a premature motion taking precious hours away in an "emergent" application in which they needed a decision from her ASAP and (2) Delayed the subsequent filings by at least 12 hours. Meanwhile, tomorrow's a federal holiday so at best they're ticking off some circuit court judges and clerks who are going to be pulled in to work on the "emergent" filings trump's lawyers spent days fucking around on.
  10. Amateur hour. It looks like trump finally filed the motion for the stay before the district court. Stupid that they didn't have it ready to go last night so it could be filed immediately after the judge issued her decision. Now they have to wait for another ruling from her, and I think courts are closed tomorrow. trump's lawyers are running out the clock until the documents are released Friday themselves. Although, again, I'll believe he faces consequences for anything when I actually see it happen. Which will be never.
  11. Maybe. Although I doubt moreso than the other north shore burbs mentioned. It's not like Winnetka is cheap. But, while I still have a lot of family there and am familiar with the area, it's been years since I've lived in Chicago. I lived in Evanston for a while, and then moved into the city to Andersonville. And I was renting at the time, so I can't really speak to housing prices.
  12. Doesn't he have to ask the District Court for a stay pending appeal first (which it would have denied)? I don't think he can just seek a stay from the appellate court. Of course, he filed a motion for a stay pending appeal last night, but that was before there was a decision, so the motion was denied. But I think he would have to properly file that motion before the District Court before he could seek a stay from the Circuit Court. All that said, trump never faces consequences for anything, and nothing the court does would shock me at this point.
  13. I would just add that the only one of these suburbs that is on the el, as opposed to having to take the Metra into the city, is Evanston. I lived in Evanston for a while and loved it there. Still very close to the city with easy access, and with a lot of walkable neighborhoods with restaurants, bars, etc. The other north suburbs mentioned are nice, and I have family who lives there and happy there, but for my taste too suburban. I've heard Oak Park and Naperville are nice, but know less about them.
  14. Thai curry. You could make it with veggies, sweet potatoes, etc., and then just add in chicken or shrimp to some of it.
  15. Yes. Winters are cold in Philadelphia, but nowhere near as brutal as Chicago. Philly gets cold in the winter, but it's not the unrelenting snow and wind and sub-zero temps of Chicago. I lived in Chicago for many years, and loved it there. I think if I could magically pick up my job, family, friends, etc. and go anywhere, I'd be back in Chicago. Agreed, it is like a city with a small town vibe. Also, as mentioned above, probably need to be in one of the close in suburbs to get decent schools.
  16. 1. Voting rights 2. Climate change 3. Access to healthcare, particularly for women.
  17. So what is CRT? And what schools other than law schools is it being taught in? You don't get to lie that CRT is being taught in elementary schools and then rely on the actual definition of CRT, which you've been misrepresenting this entire time. There is zero reason why Dems should let the GOP control the narrative in this nonsense way. Yet they just did.
  18. Bingo. They should have immediately come out with something like the GOP is scared to have their children learn about slavery, Jim Crow, and redlining, and think their children are such snowflakes they can't be exposed to those things. Instead they just ignored it. The Dems need to be way more aggressive in their messaging, and stop letting the GOP get away with this bullshit. Fucking call them on it.
  19. A lot of angry people, including business owners and those who were out of work during Covid or parents who were home schooling their kids for over a year, voting against an incumbent. Combined with a change in how to vote--after 2 election cycles of mail in voting going back to in person voting, which wasn't communicated well, meaning that the less engaged people weren't turning out. Combined with the national Republican nonsense on CRT causing working up their cult members.
  20. This. Spent a week in Estes Park this summer, and had a great time. Terrific hiking at RMNP and Estes Park is enough of a town that there are good bars/restaurants, etc. We rented a cabin at the YMCA there. It was nothing fancy, but had a porch with views of the Rockies and a decent kitchen.. Also had a great time a few years ago at Moab, UT, just maybe 10 miles from Arches National Park and IIRC about an hour from Canyonlands. Stayed at an Airbnb just outside of town.
  21. Only this, from a 2014 interview: "You know what solves it? When the economy crashes, when the country goes to total hell and everything is a disaster," Trump said. "Then you’ll have a [chuckles], you know, you’ll have riots to go back to where we used to be when we were great." Can't have an economy that actually works for the people, or does well when Biden is president. The GQP needs an angry populace to keep the grift going.
  22. I did finally get my new passport, about 4 months after sending it in for renewal.
  23. Yes.
  24. How would they have executive privilege? Doesn't it attach to the executive--i.e. Biden. I don't think a past executive employee can invoke the privilege if the executive branch is waiving the privilege (to the extent executive privilege could even possibly apply to a plan to overthrow the government).
