  1. No way trump ever picks a female vp. His entire schtick is a bizzaro version oh hypermasculinity. Women are only sex objects to him. And the GQP wants to put those uppity sluts in their place. Which you need the power structure to consist entirely of white men. On the off chance he does somehow replace Vance it will absolutely be with a white purportedly straight “Christian” man.
  2. Is the only place the story that Biden won't endorse Harris an unsourced tweet from a Newsmax reporter?
  3. Good thing Biden is immune from prosecution.
  4. I'm old enough to remember this.
  5. I thought he was a billionaire. Why should the taxpayers give him a handout? Can't he afford to hire his own security detail?
  6. By the time I voted in the primary, Biden was unopposed. To the extent there were even others running against him, and it sounds like there were, that was only in the earlier states. What I'm getting from this thread is that I'm supposed to be fine with what a few voters in a few states decided six months ago.
  7. You have one party that's completely unseriousness, running a bigoted felon who thinks windmills cause cancer. While they're whipping up their base over bathrooms and drag queen story hour. Meanwhile, the only party that is ostensibly serious about governing, is running someone who is rapidly losing the capability to govern. You win by drawing a contrast to the clown car. Frankly, at this point Biden isn't providing much to contrast with. The party itself certainly isn't if they think installling an 82-year-old who appears to be in the beginning stages of dementia is a way to govern.
  8. This. Dems win when they stop acting scared, of racists, trump, whatever. Right now the dems' argument is that they're not running a convicted felon who tried to overthrow the government. Which, okay is good enough for me, and is shocking that it's not good enough for large swaths of the country. But it would be nice if there was something a little more inspiring to actually vote for. And polls in this context are next to meaningless. No one can predict who's going to turn out to vote in swing states at this point. But if half the country is going all in on a felon and a traitor with dementia, the least the other half can do is something better than non-felon, non-traitor with dementia.
  9. I don't get the only Biden can win take. The country's been fucked since trump won the first time. Likely from well before then. But you win by being charismatic and bold. Hell, trump won by being a charismatic, raging asshole. And the dems win when someone with charisma, Obama or a younger Biden, run, not when they're playing it safe and uninteresting. And the take is that an 82-year-old who if he can make it though a short press conference is a huge relief is the safe choice boggles my mind. Never mind that the safe choice rarely wins anyway. We should be able to do better than demented evil clown vs. demented nice guy. And if we can't, we deserve what we get. Dems may well lose regardless, because huge swaths of this country are fucking morons. But at least go down fighting, and not being so scared of losing they're running someone who appears to be in the early stages of dementia.
  10. I was on a zoom with a coworker who lives close to the epicenter. He said "Hold on" like something was wrong in his house, and I was thinking what the fuck is going on there, and a second later my whole house (about 50 miles away) started shaking.
  11. Suggestions for a single day in Charleston? Never been before and going for work. I'll have a day on my own first, before getting tied up in meetings.
  12. Bad. I live a few miles from there, and am surprised LGA was even open. Just driving was shit with torrential rain, flooded roads, and strong wind.
  13. Meanwhile, Southwest 737 almost hit the tower at La Guardia. Not that this has anything to do with the plane itself.
  14. Whale watching in Juneau was phenomenal. I'd been on other whale watching trips in Maine and New Zealand, and they didn't hold a candle to Juneau. We saw dozens of whales, really close up. I don't have any real recommendations for other excursions. I did a canoe trip in Ketchikan (or Skagway? it's all run together in my mind), and a hike in the other of the two, and scenery was spectacular. But it was an overly packaged, you're in a giant canoe with 20 other people for 15 minutes, or you're hiking 2 miles at low elevation and not seeing much. I just wanted to stay and rent a car and really see things. All the excursions felt frustrating, other than the whale watching, which I wasn't gung ho on doing beforehand, but got talked into and it turned out to be incredible.
  15. https://www.wsj.com/business/airlines/cockpit-mishap-might-have-caused-plunge-on-latam-boeing-787-ee3dd7b4?st=lk5dgm4o5yrcr20&reflink=article_email_share Boeing BA0.73% advisedairlinestocheckthecockpitseatson787Dreamliner jets after a seat mishap likely pushed a pilot into the controls, causing a sudden, terrifying plunge on a flight to New Zealand this week. A Latam Airlines flight attendant hit a switch on the pilot’s seat while serving a meal, leading a motorized feature to push the pilot into the controls and push down the plane’s nose, according to U.S. industry officials briefed on preliminary evidence from an investigation. The switch, on the back of the chair, is usually covered and isn’t supposed to be used when a pilot is in the seat. Boeing issued a memo late Thursday to operators of 787 jets recommending that they inspect the cockpit chairs for loose covers on the switches and instructing them how to turn off power to the pilot seat motor if needed. Boeing said it is considering updates to flight crew manuals. A switch on the back of 787 cockpit seats controls a motor that moves the seat forward or back. Boeing in 2017 provided airlines with instructions for maintaining the switches. “Closing the spring-loaded seat back switch guard onto a loose/detached rocker switch cap can potentially jam the rocker switch, resulting in unintended seat movement,” according to the memo, which was viewed by The Wall Street Journal. The memo says this was a known issue and that Boeing had issued a related service notice in 2017. The memo doesn’t indicate whether a loose switch cover played a role in the incident on the Latam flight. The part is on roughly 375 planes, according to a person familiar with the situation.
  16. I'm not defending Boeing, which has real problems. But I don't think any of these incidents have anything to do with Boeing. Today's issue appears to be pilot error and a wet runway. Boeing doesn't make the engines (Monday's engine fire). And I doubt the wheel falling off was a Boeing problem in a plane that's been in service for years--that's probably a UA maintenance issue.
  17. This. You can also send USD to yourself using Western Union. Don't use an ATM in Argentina. You should also bring something to put all those pesos into. I exchanged 100 USD there, and received a giant stack of pesos, I think 130,000 pesos or so. Their largest bill in regular circulation is a 1000 peso note which is worth less than $1 (fluctuates constantly though).
  18. Two month old MAX at a plugged emergency exit. But, sure, no quality problems here.
  19. This. I went to Finnish Lapland a few years ago in early March, and maybe the best trip I've ever done. Saw the northern lights multiple times, stayed in a glass igloo, dogsledding in untouched gorgeous wilderness, skiing, snowmobiling, Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi, ice breaker boat, sauna
