  1. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.chalkbeat.org/platform/amp/2021/1/12/22227990/covid-teachers-school-reopening Could be related to more testing but teachers are also testing positive more than their surrounding communities. I can’t say definitively that my teachers got it at school, but it would be quite the coincidence. Negative for 8 months then kids show up with covid and they get sick 3 days later.
  2. Covid spread in my school last semester. It wasn’t terrible but it happened and affected students and teachers.
  3. Depends on the campus most likely. We are trying to figure out how many/which kids are coming tomorrow so we can plan for staff, breakfast/lunch, virtual schedule vs in person schedule, special Ed kids that get extra support, etc. It quickly became a clear the calendar type of day.
  4. We can’t turn anybody away per TEA. We can say it’s for the groups I listed above but at the end of the day, we will teach anybody that shows up.
  5. So does this mean specialized programs, K, and pre-K? Basically, just like how it opened for the fall semester. There is some flexibility campus by campus but mostly mean kids with no internet, special education kids, kids with nowhere else to go because their parent is a first responder, etc. We are caught in between city health officials telling us to close and TEA saying we have to stay open. Seems like this is the compromise.
  6. And my teachers are teaching right now so they don’t even know this. Austin city health officials really pushed this.
  7. This is pretty much it but we still have to stay open for people that really need it in order to fulfill our TEA obligations. So now schools are scrambling to figure out who is coming, getting supplies home to those that aren’t, and it’s supposed to be 28 degrees tonight with wet roads.
  8. Anybody claim the title for 2020 or are we all losers in this shit year?
  9. I’m betting the state won’t let them. Schools are state funded and they have let us know repeatedly over the last 8 months where the orders come from.
  10. People of a certain persuasion during normal times: public schools are left wing indoctrination camps that teach little useful information. They produce graduates that are barely functional at basic skills. Same people during covid: public schools are an essential function of society and kids will greatly suffer if they cannot go in person. There are risks but it’s worth it because schools are so important in social and academic development.
  11. Teachers left out of priority vaccinations: HOUSTON – The Centers for Disease Control suggested teachers, first responders and other essential workers receive the COVID-19 vaccine next. However, Texas health officials seemed to disagree. Officials announced Monday that the second phase of vaccinations, Phase 1B, will focus on people 65 and older and those with certain chronic medical conditions. Edit: this happened a couple of weeks ago but it’s a response to people saying to get us the vaccine quickly. I’ll be first in line when it’s actually available to me.
  12. The ticket industry needs a disruptive force like uber was to the cab cartel.
  13. If only my staff was made up of 30 year old teachers with no health conditions and healthy families that they go home to. I promise you teachers are looking at that risk/reward calculation as well. I know this because they come into my office and resign. Im not arguing that schools should be closed fwiw. People just need to understand what we are asking of teachers right now in terms of health risk. I see a lot of dismissive comments on the internet. Then I go to work and see teachers that don’t see their parents for months on end so they can be there for somebody else’s kids. I hear the arguments about low income kids a lot and generally agree. The elementary schools in Austin that are title 1 (poor) have about 30% of their kids coming in person. The white schools are over 60% in person already or will quickly be there after the break. So, by opening schools, you aren’t really capturing much of the demographic that needs it the most.
  14. Those community numbers become impossible to keep out of the school at a certain point. Up until December we were doing well. When the Travis county numbers got over 300 a day it became common for community members we knew to have it. When it got over 400 it was in the school with students and staff testing positive. It’s over 500 most days now.
  15. Wife just got the email from her principal. She's really upset about it. Yep, managing the emotions of working in this environment is the toughest part of the job right now. We had students and staff test positive in December so there is a lot of fear/anxiety about going back.
  16. Do you get negative points for people over 100?
  17. I had him in 2020 and it was a waste of a spot.
  18. Who is winning this thing? I doubt John Lewis and Trebek have me anywhere near the top.
