  1. Ok, I’ll play along. Let’s take a look at this place on the upper east side that rents for $2,175 and is 1,000 sqft. Link at bottom. I picked this place because it is comparable to the cost it would be to rent my current house in the Austin burbs. It’s actually about 200 more but would take less maintenance such as lawn care. Close enough to call it even. The wife and I probably spend an average of 1,000 a month on normal cars when you factor payment, gas, oil changes, maintenance, repairs, and insurance. It could actually be more than that. Transportation costs in nyc I’ll estimate at 500 a month for two people. I’m coming out 500 ahead now. I work in public education and would get about a 1,000 a month raise after taxes as best as I can figure but that’s a guess. My wife would make the same salary but pay more in taxes. She doesn’t make enough for it to be a significant hit though. Let’s say 500 a month to be on the safe side. Now I’m 1000 at month ahead in NYC. Subtract 500 a month for shit being more expensive there and I’m 500 a month ahead. What am I missing other than the cost of a divorce because we are living in less space? https://www.apartments.com/312-e-62nd-st-new-york-ny-unit-2/zw6w34x/
  2. He’s a complete lying piece of shit....and it won’t matter at all. Too many cognitively declining, Fox News zombie, olds that hit the R button no matter what.
  3. There is a concern/theory that Texas has a lot of lazy republicans that don’t show up often because they simply haven’t had to. When Texas starts to get more purple, these people will kick into action, keeping Texas slightly red for longer than expected. You can see a bit of that in the beto race. Dems showed up in force, but republicans showed up more than usual to match them. Hopefully this theory is incorrect or less significant than some think.
  4. That’s my plan. Let’s see who makes it through, hear some pitches for candidates, vote on the best, then support the heck out of them. In the mean time start thinking about Texas house districts that are ready to go blue.
  5. 2022 will tell us a lot. Trump being at the top of the ticket is going to skew things. I’m not sure which way as he is such a different character but it will bring out different voters from both sides.
  6. The republicans can’t gerrymander their way to victory in statewide elections. The more I think about it, Dems will probably get the governorship before the senate. I could see the house being blue, the senate being red, and the statewide offices going to the more popular candidate of either party for a while. Eventually it will all be blue if the republicans party doesn’t reinvent itself after trump.
  7. I’m hopeful that Dems can take back the Texas House this election cycle but for the sake of discussion, let’s say they don’t. Republicans will pull out all the stops to gerrymander the maps to hold onto control as long as possible. My main wondering is how they can draw a map in 2020 that benefits them but won’t completely trash their chances by 2028. Right now they can draw some 90% dem city districts and that won’t change. But they can draw enough rural areas into suburban districts to keep them red. What happens when these fast growing suburbs turn more blue and completely overwhelm the rural areas they are paired with as far as population? Long term it seems like republicans would be better off giving up on some suburbs and drawing the maps to give others more rural areas than is currently needed. They might not get as many seats in the short term but it would protect them more in the longer term.
  8. This. The directional change thing needs to happen. Also, I take the flyover from mopac to 183 north during rush hour everyday. It would be so much more functional if lanes didn’t abruptly end for no reason 5 times in a 2 mile stretch.
  9. Bloomberg and yang with 12 for me. I have some unorthodox liberal views so these aren’t really made for me. It would work better if I could weight the importance to me. For example I’m a complete socialist on healthcare but don’t believe we should eliminate student load debt for people that currently have it. But I would weight the healthcare issue as 10x more important to me personally.
  10. Pretty sure this election is already on everybody’s radar and not worth throwing our money on, but it’s worth mentioning again. If you have friends in the area that are registered but typically only vote in presidential elections, get them to turn out. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/ncna1116516 Although the winner of the special election will have to run again in November, before the Legislature even holds its next session, the contest has become "a tremendously important race for the future of Texas Democrats," said Brandon Rottinghaus, a political scientist at the University of Houston. Democrats believe demographics have already shifted in their favor, he said, but to win, they'll need to get those groups to vote. Gov. Greg Abbott recently wrote an email urging supporters to back Gates, saying his opponent was backed by "radical liberals like Beto O'Rourke," who, Abbott said, "want to confiscate your guns, tax churches, and allow abortion up until birth." And in an email to local Republicans last fall, a Fort Bend County party official described the special election as "our Alamo," seeming to acknowledge the changing political winds in the community west of Houston. Once a Republican bastion — the home district of former U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay — Fort Bend is regarded as one of the fastest-growing and most rapidly diversifying counties in the country. "Democrats are licking their chops, ready for wins," Rottinghaus said. "I think Texas Democrats are tired of the good fight. I think they want to be the ones standing in the ring alone at the end."
  11. Much appreciated. Seriously. 1. I think this will be him, but I do think we have a window where he is scared enough to seek change. He and his parents are stubborn individuals in general, which will make this difficult. 2. This is a family of enablers. They are in no way capable of doing their part without outside help. In fact, I believe they would unwittingly sabotage the recovery process unless they have very strict instructions. Having somebody come out to talk with them is a good idea. I honestly don’t know if the MIL will talk to someone not affiliated with the Catholic Church. I’ll work on that. 3. I agree but need more information on what are healthy boundaries to set. 4. I’ll get on that. Does the big book have information for families?
  12. Would it be appropriate for them to demand that he enter treatment (or at least AA) or move out? I know that the alcoholic needs to have a certain amount of buy in for there to be success. But what other card can they play while he lives with them without being complete enablers?
  13. I don’t disagree with anything you said, I’m just not in a position to do any convincing. I don’t have that relationship with him nor the education on the subject.
  14. Oh, they are messed up. Check the bitch about your family/in-laws thread in lulz for a dose of it. They really aren’t in charge of caring for him but he is living with them. He recently got a new job in the area and moved in with them before getting his own place set up. He makes just under 6 figures so he can afford to move out. But they are living together so I feel like they need to be a part of the solution. Brutal is probably better for them, honestly. Anything too polite and they will continue to live in denial. How hard should they be pushing him to go to treatment right now? Seriously, thanks for the responses.
  15. He was very scared in the hospital but I don’t know how he feels after learning that he doesn’t have MS. They were not able to conduct an MRI for four days because he was shaking so bad. I 100% know he needs serious treatment. It’s his best chance at a somewhat normal life. I just know his family is going to be desperate to act like there is nothing wrong and live in denial. Im not sure where BIL is with all of this but it wouldn’t surprise me if the answer is also denial. What do I do to better help them understand alcoholism and how they should move forward with him? I don’t think staying out of it is an option because my wife wants to force the issue with her parents. She will listen to me so I want to give her the best resources/advice possible.
  16. It may be worth nothing that the treatment he received in the hospital was entirely medical stuff not related to him getting help with addiction. They were mostly testing for a while host of diseases.
  17. I searched Alcoholics Anonymous and got this thread as the top result. I am about to go back and read it but wanted to ask for advice with my situation as it’s a bit time sensitive. My BIL was admitted to the hospital by his neurologist because they thought he had something along the lines of MS. Turns out he drank himself into partial paralysis and likely caused serious damage to some organs. Managed to hold down a full time job but still lives at home with his parents. It had become clear that he was drinking too much but nobody knew it was this bad. It’s become very evident that he’s a serious alcoholic and needs help. He was discharged from the hospital after about 5 days this evening. His parents are completely clueless about a lot of things, and I’m sure alcoholism is one of them. My wife told them to take all of the booze in the house to the dads office but they refused saying that he doesn’t drink much at home. While they are incredibly worried about him, this shows me that they have no clue what they are doing. How do I get this family on the same page with this? What resources should I read and suggest to them? Should they be pushing him to go to rehab? How much should they be forcing the issue with any of this? I’ll go back and read the thread now....
  18. So if you remember BIL that drinks too much from my previous posts.....he’s in the hospital now getting tests done because they thought he had MS or something terrible. Turns out he’s drank himself into partial paralysis. Hard to do when you hold down a full time job. But this thread is about me, damnit. That house is going to be dry as a bone for every holiday gathering in the future. I’m happy to do it to help my BIL......bit it was the only thing saving my sanity with the rest of the crew.
  19. She turns 91 this year. Just not a lot of points available.
  20. I assume that means you watched two reruns of Big Bang Theory.
  21. If Wally wants to amend the rules, I am happy to replace those two.
  22. Go to Flair’s wiki page and read the health section. Pretty rough. Dick Cheney’s is 12 paragraphs but it started in 2000 so I doubt all the heart stuff catches up with him now.
  23. Never played before and actually did some research. There’s a morbid excitement when you run across a 12 paragraph detail of a former pro wrestlers alcohol fueled heath problems John Lewis (2/21/1940) Lamar Odom (11/6/1979) Jerry Sandusky (1/26/1944) Dick Cheney (1/30/1941) Ric Flair (2/25/1949) Alex Trebek (7/22/1940) Rush Limbaugh (1/12/1951) Hulk Hogan (8/11/1953) Aaron Carter (12/7/1987) Michael J Fox (6/9/1961)
