  1. I’m in western Wilco and voted yesterday. It was quite busy and the lady working said that it had been that way all day. Props to the workers for running a really friendly/efficient machine. It was hard to tell whether more R or D ballots had been given out because they had gone through so many sticker pages of each. In general I’ll take high turnout as it favors Dems. Wife and I both felt strange walking up and requesting a D ballot after spending so many years on the other side. I’ll fire the surly libtard pac thread up again after we know who wins the primaries. Let’s see if we can’t just swing a close general election.
  2. Elementary school administrator here. Yes, even young kids can cause a severe amount of damage to property, other students, and even staff. Calling the cops is typically not the right answer. Cuffs are never the right answer. Even with students in a state of crisis being removed from school directly to a mental health facility, we have never had to use cuffs. People need to understand that there are two very different sets of laws governing schools and their students. Special education and general education. Let’s say a student is in special education with an emotional disturbance diagnosis. This student cannot be suspended for more than 10 days in a school year without a manifestation determination hearing to determine if their behavior was a result of their disability. Guess what......every possible behavior is due to the disability and that kid is ours for the rest of the year. The only way that kid is leaving my campus is if they have an offense classified as non-discretionary such as bringing drugs or a weapon to school. We can physically contain a kid using SAMA techniques, but only if they are an immediate danger to themselves or others. Walking around and smashing computers? Nope, doesn’t cut it and it’s a fast way to get fired. You know what my only option is? Calling the cops when the level of property destruction gets to be over $100. If the kid is under 10, even they can’t do much about it. Punch a kid/teacher in the face? Spend the afternoon with me and they will be back in class tomorrow. Special education laws add great protection for some of our most at risk students. However, they have gone too far in protecting some really egregious behavior and allowing it to happen every day, year after year. That’s not helping the special education child develop a sense of reality about how people will deal with that behavior outside of school. Im going to cut this post off so that it doesn’t get into TLDR territory but I’m happy to answer questions.
  3. Pete is a weasel but he entertains me in this shit show.
  4. Jesus, terrible by the mods
  5. Steyer: well I think mod: thank you mr steyer, moving on now
  6. I’m a fan of Liz but that was a bit much for me.
  7. Warren after bloomerberg again.
  8. I threw up a little in my mouth.
  9. This. I was still weighing my options until a few days ago. Still plan to vote early but wanted to see how a few things shook out in the presidential primary first.
  10. When should we expect polling that will include the debate and its potential bump? Interested to see if it translated to anything. Also and word on a fundraising bump? I am constantly blasted with Bloomberg and Bernie commercials.
  11. Trump is -240 on my book to win.
  12. They get money off welfare while voting against such programs because its socialism.
  13. The Bloomberg line where he tried to downplay his sexual harassment as “only some jokes” was truly cringeworthy for me.
  14. I’m back. She’s the best candidate in the race and she will get the two votes from this house.
  15. Pete is that annoying guy in high school that didn’t do any work on the group project because he was busy promoting himself at a student council meeting. But he made sure that he got a killer spot in the presentation and took all the credit by being a smooth talker.
  16. Last couple of digs not withstanding, Liz is having a great night. Not sure it will translate to the polls but it’s a good night for her. Needs to finish with some positivity though.
  17. Wife and I went through all the candidates to decide who to vote for in the primary. We both like warren the best but aren’t about throwing our votes away. We ended up deciding to just roll with her and hope things somehow turn around. It’s a long shot but this race has been schizophrenic so far.
  18. Sounds like you are leaving right around then but Lone Star Park starts live racing in mid-April.
  19. I don’t have specific knowledge of any collectable but like to hustle to make extra money on the side. What is something easy to get into just to get some experience with this? I have bought and sold on eBay in the past but it was just stuff I wanted to get rid of, not something I was trying to flip. Any advice you have would be helpful.
  20. I’m in for ‘bout tree fiddy.
  21. 10 years ago - solid republican voter 8 years ago - luke warm republican voter 4 years ago - luke warm Democrat voter Now - Democrat donor and solid voter who will be an insufferable prick to republicans when this state goes blue. Fuck those vote suppressing mother fuckers and the bullshit they pull to try to retain power at the expense of the least advantaged in society. Unlike republicans, Dems won’t have to play those games because when this state goes blue, it’s never going back.
  22. I’ll gladly vote for her if she is the dem nominee. If you like her policies, I highly suggest you register and vote for the eventual dem nominee as well. They will have much more in common with her than a cruel con man like Trump.
  23. I have so much respect for Beto and what it is doing. He could easily be sitting at home or making a shitload at a corporate gig. Buts he’s been out campaigning for other people, even if they have little shot at winning. He’s done more to turn Texas blue than anybody since the republicans took over.
  24. I’ve read through the thread and thought about it. I moved here as an 8 year old in 1991 so I have seen most of the changes and I have two answers. 1. The late 90s tech boom because it populated the suburbs. Austin wasn’t really a city where many people lived in the burbs until around that time. At the beginning of that decade, in 1990, around 5,000 people lived in cedar park. Now there are 80,000 there with an additional 130,000 in round rock. It was the first time where the greater Austin area began to stretch across large swaths of land. 2. 2009 The freak out over the 2008 collapse was in the beginning stages of recovery and people started moving to Austin from all over with good paying jobs. They growth was always there but this time it was different. Many were coming from outside of Texas and with a big budget. They wanted to live in the city and didn’t mind paying a ton or living in a high rise condo. This is when the culture of the city changed as much as the skyline. I never cared much about money growing up because I could do everything that I wanted to with my middle class parents footing the modest bill. Rich or middle class didn’t matter too much because we all hung out at the same places. Hell, half of what I did was completely free. You never knew if the guy next to you wearing jorts and an obscure band shirt was homeless or a millionaire. Money matters a lot in Austin now. It’s expensive to live in the parts of the city that make Austin cool. Most events and the better restaurants are expensive as well. I still hang out at places like workhorse and draughthouse that have a local vibe and won’t break the bank, but that’s not most people’s version of Austin anymore. Im not too bitter about the changes because it’s been a constant since I’ve moved here. There was never a time that Austin wasn’t growing. I think the poster that said Austin is in it’s weird pre-teen awkward phase is pretty correct. There is a lot of almost anxiety about what Austin is and what it will become.
  25. Would love to hear prosecutors defend evidence collected by that cop in their upcoming trials.
