  1. This. The directional change thing needs to happen. Also, I take the flyover from mopac to 183 north during rush hour everyday. It would be so much more functional if lanes didn’t abruptly end for no reason 5 times in a 2 mile stretch.
  2. Bloomberg and yang with 12 for me. I have some unorthodox liberal views so these aren’t really made for me. It would work better if I could weight the importance to me. For example I’m a complete socialist on healthcare but don’t believe we should eliminate student load debt for people that currently have it. But I would weight the healthcare issue as 10x more important to me personally.
  3. Pretty sure this election is already on everybody’s radar and not worth throwing our money on, but it’s worth mentioning again. If you have friends in the area that are registered but typically only vote in presidential elections, get them to turn out. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/ncna1116516 Although the winner of the special election will have to run again in November, before the Legislature even holds its next session, the contest has become "a tremendously important race for the future of Texas Democrats," said Brandon Rottinghaus, a political scientist at the University of Houston. Democrats believe demographics have already shifted in their favor, he said, but to win, they'll need to get those groups to vote. Gov. Greg Abbott recently wrote an email urging supporters to back Gates, saying his opponent was backed by "radical liberals like Beto O'Rourke," who, Abbott said, "want to confiscate your guns, tax churches, and allow abortion up until birth." And in an email to local Republicans last fall, a Fort Bend County party official described the special election as "our Alamo," seeming to acknowledge the changing political winds in the community west of Houston. Once a Republican bastion — the home district of former U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay — Fort Bend is regarded as one of the fastest-growing and most rapidly diversifying counties in the country. "Democrats are licking their chops, ready for wins," Rottinghaus said. "I think Texas Democrats are tired of the good fight. I think they want to be the ones standing in the ring alone at the end."
  4. Much appreciated. Seriously. 1. I think this will be him, but I do think we have a window where he is scared enough to seek change. He and his parents are stubborn individuals in general, which will make this difficult. 2. This is a family of enablers. They are in no way capable of doing their part without outside help. In fact, I believe they would unwittingly sabotage the recovery process unless they have very strict instructions. Having somebody come out to talk with them is a good idea. I honestly don’t know if the MIL will talk to someone not affiliated with the Catholic Church. I’ll work on that. 3. I agree but need more information on what are healthy boundaries to set. 4. I’ll get on that. Does the big book have information for families?
  5. Would it be appropriate for them to demand that he enter treatment (or at least AA) or move out? I know that the alcoholic needs to have a certain amount of buy in for there to be success. But what other card can they play while he lives with them without being complete enablers?
  6. I don’t disagree with anything you said, I’m just not in a position to do any convincing. I don’t have that relationship with him nor the education on the subject.
  7. Oh, they are messed up. Check the bitch about your family/in-laws thread in lulz for a dose of it. They really aren’t in charge of caring for him but he is living with them. He recently got a new job in the area and moved in with them before getting his own place set up. He makes just under 6 figures so he can afford to move out. But they are living together so I feel like they need to be a part of the solution. Brutal is probably better for them, honestly. Anything too polite and they will continue to live in denial. How hard should they be pushing him to go to treatment right now? Seriously, thanks for the responses.
  8. He was very scared in the hospital but I don’t know how he feels after learning that he doesn’t have MS. They were not able to conduct an MRI for four days because he was shaking so bad. I 100% know he needs serious treatment. It’s his best chance at a somewhat normal life. I just know his family is going to be desperate to act like there is nothing wrong and live in denial. Im not sure where BIL is with all of this but it wouldn’t surprise me if the answer is also denial. What do I do to better help them understand alcoholism and how they should move forward with him? I don’t think staying out of it is an option because my wife wants to force the issue with her parents. She will listen to me so I want to give her the best resources/advice possible.
  9. It may be worth nothing that the treatment he received in the hospital was entirely medical stuff not related to him getting help with addiction. They were mostly testing for a while host of diseases.
  10. I searched Alcoholics Anonymous and got this thread as the top result. I am about to go back and read it but wanted to ask for advice with my situation as it’s a bit time sensitive. My BIL was admitted to the hospital by his neurologist because they thought he had something along the lines of MS. Turns out he drank himself into partial paralysis and likely caused serious damage to some organs. Managed to hold down a full time job but still lives at home with his parents. It had become clear that he was drinking too much but nobody knew it was this bad. It’s become very evident that he’s a serious alcoholic and needs help. He was discharged from the hospital after about 5 days this evening. His parents are completely clueless about a lot of things, and I’m sure alcoholism is one of them. My wife told them to take all of the booze in the house to the dads office but they refused saying that he doesn’t drink much at home. While they are incredibly worried about him, this shows me that they have no clue what they are doing. How do I get this family on the same page with this? What resources should I read and suggest to them? Should they be pushing him to go to rehab? How much should they be forcing the issue with any of this? I’ll go back and read the thread now....
  11. So if you remember BIL that drinks too much from my previous posts.....he’s in the hospital now getting tests done because they thought he had MS or something terrible. Turns out he’s drank himself into partial paralysis. Hard to do when you hold down a full time job. But this thread is about me, damnit. That house is going to be dry as a bone for every holiday gathering in the future. I’m happy to do it to help my BIL......bit it was the only thing saving my sanity with the rest of the crew.
  12. She turns 91 this year. Just not a lot of points available.
  13. I assume that means you watched two reruns of Big Bang Theory.
  14. Damn, beat me by seconds.
  15. Too late to add David Stern?
  16. If Wally wants to amend the rules, I am happy to replace those two.
  17. Go to Flair’s wiki page and read the health section. Pretty rough. Dick Cheney’s is 12 paragraphs but it started in 2000 so I doubt all the heart stuff catches up with him now.
  18. Never played before and actually did some research. There’s a morbid excitement when you run across a 12 paragraph detail of a former pro wrestlers alcohol fueled heath problems John Lewis (2/21/1940) Lamar Odom (11/6/1979) Jerry Sandusky (1/26/1944) Dick Cheney (1/30/1941) Ric Flair (2/25/1949) Alex Trebek (7/22/1940) Rush Limbaugh (1/12/1951) Hulk Hogan (8/11/1953) Aaron Carter (12/7/1987) Michael J Fox (6/9/1961)
  19. More like the free space in bingo. Everyone gets him.
  20. “pick at least guess who is currently under 40“ I’ll play, just want to clarify this part though.
  21. Does that mean drink heavily?
  22. It’s about what everyone on here expected. She’s in the foulest of foul moods. BIL and FIL went to work (by choice) so it’s just me, her, wife and SIL. Of course, SIL continues to be great and calls her out on her shitty attitude. Nothing over the top, just incredibly rude to anybody that tries to talk to her. SIL told her at 9:30 this morning that she’s packing up and leaving if it continues. That is actually a threat because MIL like having everybody over. Somehow she hasn’t made the connection that people would come over much more often if she acted like a human. Probably because people keep coming back. I actually think she has a mood disorder or something. Just a quick story on the rib roast ordeal from yesterday to give you a picture. SIL asks her husband when he is going to start cooking the 3 rib roasts. From across the house MIL rudely yells that he won’t be cooking any of them because she didn’t like the way his turned out last year. He doesn’t care then leaves the kitchen to watch sports. An hour later MIL comes back and yells at him that if he doesn’t start cooking his roast (1 of the 3) that it won’t be ready in time. We all look at each other like WTF. SIL proceeds to give it to MIL about her absurdity. He cooks his one roast, she cooks her two. As he’s cutting his up, she makes all types of noises and proclaims his to be raw and that nobody will eat that. 5 minutes later his is gone and only MIL and one other old lady are eating the shoe leather ones. His was actually slightly over cooked unintentionally but still ok. Well this pissed MIL off even more because she’s had mostly an uncontested reign of all things, including the food, until last year. Later she got sent to bed pissed off. I don’t really have any hope that it will get better, but it’s much more bearable when all the people in their 30s stick together.
  23. Yeah, I’m sure that will be next Christmas. I actually think it will be an ongoing battle but it will be better now that we are all on the same page. One on one battles were impossible and demoralizing.
  24. Today is a day that will live in infamy. 5 brave people stood up to a reign of terror than has lasted well over 30 years. The 3 children of MIL decided that no more shit will be taken and the the outlandish rudeness will stop and two were supported by spouses. It did not come without many battles throughout the day but she was thwarted at every turn. The final battle came around the great fire pit when SIL told her she should return to her dwelling (go to bed) if she is going to be negative and rude. MIL desperately looked for support, which she did not find, before heading to her nest. For over an hour now the victorious children have celebrated the win and regaled each other with battle stories from the day, something that has never happened before. The battle of breakfast, the battle of prime rib, the aggression of cleaning before guests, the counter insurgence of child rearing criticism, and finally the battle of fire pit. We may be lean, but for the first time we are unified and organized. The MIL has been put on notice, with a clear directive, that she shall ruin no more holidays. The long game has won. Let freedom ring. On a more serious note, she was really told repeatedly that she is ruining everyone’s Christmas with her negativity and lashing out. Sounds like everybody has felt the same way for a long time and we finally got organized in supporting each other in putting a stop to it. Hallelujah.
  25. I will celebrate it’s demise when the day comes.
