  1. While this season is not complete, this is the third season he is on campus. He played for Texas three seasons ago when he started against Bama as a true freshman. He played in the playoff game vs Washington and had 64 yards rushing on 9 carries and 1 TD. More importantly, he's a cool dude and I want him to win. I can't imagine how hard this is for him. He could help the team if he was healthy.
  2. “…some other euro would have…” But they didn’t. He did. You can’t give others credit for something they didn’t do. Hence, he receives and deserves the accolades. I personally don’t care about the political discussion here either way. As a history lover, I was responding to the posters who are trying to negate his achievements, which were extraordinary for their day, and kicked off a golden age of exploration, because of today’s conventional wisdom. The fact that he was brutal by our standards doesn’t negate his achievements, just as the brutality, human sacrifice and cannibalism of the Polynesians and brutal raiding culture of the Vikings doesn’t negate their achievements. i leave you with this actual funny quote from one of Pizzaro’s captains about why they came to conquer the Incas. “We came to spread light into the darkness. And to get rich.”
  3. Sure those things are very impressive, but they don't negate what Columbus accomplished in any way and neither had 1/millionth of the impact that his voyages achieved. But sounds like you're ready to play the popular game here on Surly:
  4. Many tried before him and none came back. He was the first to succeed, and he did it four times, so yes, it was an incredible achievement in its day.
  5. Being that it was good 'ole Spain, I bet the crown was far more upset about the corruption charges (not getting their cut) than the cruelty charges. Plus, he had many jealous rivals who wanted to take over his position and gains. Regardless, he was pardoned and the king permitted him to fund his final expedition to the New World. And while the Spanish conquest was cruel, so were the indigenous peoples they conquered, as evidenced that it took Cortez around 15 minutes to gather lots of tribes to fight the Aztecs, who were pretty awful themselves.
  6. Perhaps you should explain your theory instead of just disagreeing. Yeah, he kinda used the stars and dead reckoning: "According to Columbus' logs, he mainly used dead reckoning navigation. Dead reckoning was a method in which the navigator would measure the distance and course from a specific point, such as the port."
  7. Say what you want about the Nazis, but Hugo Boss was the bomb.* * I looked it up. Apparently, Hugo Boss didn't design the uniforms, as commonly believed, but happily produced them.
  8. I'm sure he was a total dick. Many an amazing feat was accomplished and/or created by people who were total fucking dicks, cause sometimes, that what it takes. Joseph Heller wrote my favorite book, Catch 22, and pretty everyone said he was a total dick. Heck, Charles Schulz, creator of Peanuts, was supposedly a total fucking dick.
  9. As happy as I am for Tre Wisner, I’m sad for Cedric Baxter. If you remember him from three seasons ago, he was a force and completely fast, elusive and strong as hell. Plus, he’s a really nice person. I am afraid we may never see him reach his former self. I hope he has used his NIL money wisely. He told em that he wanted to start an apparel brand and had even created the logo, which was nice. More power to him for a full return to his former talent and I wish him health, wealth and success!
  10. His feats of navigation were fairly incredible, considering he made four trips back in forth in ships that were 50-70 feet long and he sailed by the stars and dead-reckoning. His first voyage took two months across unknown seas, so yeah, it was impressive. It's difficult to judge someone from antiquity by our standards. Spain was emerging from 800 years of Moorish rule. Much of it was brutal and it shaped their world-view. The cruelty he exhibited was fairly standard for the times. Anyone who loves history, and I assume you do, knows humans kinda suck. And his discoveries laid the path for development of the New World, so yes, he had a huge impact on the eventual forming of the United States.
  11. Yes they have. Go read the Florida game thread.
  12. Yet so many people here have been trashing him. Our fans really are the worst.
  13. Hahahah from Dirt Burgler. Sounds like....SurlyHorns FRE VENABLES10-11-2025, 04:37 P CLEAN HOUSE FIRE EVERYONE! START WITH LOSER CASTIGLIONE NAGY THE ATT GUY - BURN IT DOWN AND FUCKING START OVER.
  14. Been saving this one for a special occasion.
  15. He was a beautiful writer, for sure. Just the first sentence of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: “We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold.”
  16. Assistant coach allegedly said, “What we’ve done to the kids is fucked up,” lol.
  17. Apparently lol Uncle Bill is discussing a buyout w North Carolina, his coaches said they couldn’t get a hold of him during the bye week, and the school might be using recruiting violations to reduce his payout. Wow. Shoot, the story just keeps getting better but I’m gonna be sad if it’s over. https://www.foxsports.com/stories/college-football/bill-belichick-unc-reportedly-discussing-possible-buyout-options
  18. Fair point, but again, pure speculation. America does a great job of reinventing itself. When I worked in Europe, all those fuckers used to rib me about how bad our phones were compared to Nokia. (Which is funny, since none of those assholes were from Finland, but they took credit for it.) Now, all of them have iphones, tablets, airpods, etc.
  19. Sounds like whomever is behind AMD's stock strategy needs a promotion!
  20. That has nothing to do with what I am discussing.
  21. I'll let you guys argue all those points because you're better informed than me. My point is agnostic to politics: That it's common nature to think things are bad when by any measure, things are pretty good for most Americans and the world in general. You're presenting an imagined scenario that you envision could happen, and are referring to it like it's realty. It's not reality.
  22. It's our nature to think things are always bad, especially as we age, but actually, the world is in pretty good shape right now. There is a much higher percentage of people marked as middle class around the world than ever before, and that's astounding considering how many more people there are today. There are a higher percentage of democracies in the world today than ever before and lots of them are doing well. Wars are contained to hot spots. That's actually pretty good by the normal horrible standards of mankind. Our economy is, relatively speaking, pretty good. It's much better than the '70's when all the cities went broke. It's better than the .com bust of the 2000's. And it's way better than 2009-2011 and unlike much of the world, we had a very strong rebound after 2020. Look at all the investment in the cities. New York looks like a palace compared to when I moved there in 1982. And for having so many people struggling with inflation, those same people sure do buy a lot of stuff, travel, snd buy bigger houses than anyone in the '70s thought was possible. etc.
  23. It's an interesting point, for sure. I guess we will see.
  24. One historian agrees with you. He said fascism arose in Europe due to the economic uncertainty and fear caused by the Industrial Revolution coupled with the rise of Bolshevism. He claims today the technological revolution and the fear of islam/terrorism is causing the same effect in the West. So perhaps those forces are causing something similar.
