  1. Sweet ice climb. Break out the crampons and ice axes.
  2. Also research options regarding leaving in existing 401k vs converting to ira regarding being protected in bankruptcy or other legal judgements against you.
  3. I put one of these on my generator and pressure washer. Seem to work great. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A43PKOE/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
  4. Agree manually controlling breaker and plugging into a dryer outlet is not good. The issue is forgetting to throw the main before connecting up and powering the generator and back feeding the power lines. A double pole, double throw transfer switch, which completely isolates the power company side, installed by an electrician is best but there are other methods that will work. A generator breaker interlock switch which, when installed correctly, prevents the backfed breaker and the power mains disconnect from being turned on at the same time. The one I just bought for my breaker panel is made by the manufacturer of the panel and has a code listing. Here’s what I did: I had previously purchased a Ryobi 3400w generator for use at a ranch property that doesn’t have power and have used it boondocking with my travel trailer. Is was fairly cheap, had good rating, has an inverter output which makes it better for electronic devices. I have a Square D 150A Homeline breaker panel that uses QO breakers. I bought the Square D interlock kit that fits my panel and a dual pole QO breaker to go in the upper right position in my panel. The interlock is just a plate that slides up and down blocking the lever of either the main or feed breaker from being switched on while the other is on. I bought this 50A Generator power inlet box to connect the generator power cable into my panel. This is the same inlet connector as my RV so I could use my existing RV cable setup but will buy a new one separate from the trailer. The cable used will depend on the generator outlet and whether you have a 120/240 or 120V generator.
  5. I’ll do a post in a bit to show the parts I bought to connect into my breaker box so that it is quick and easy to connect and isolates the mains power so you don’t back feed the supply lines in case someone is working on them.
  6. My garage ceiling fell on top of a lot stuff stored on one side including 2 boxes of garage door insulation that I bought last year and have yet to install. Probably soaking wet right now and if I would have put it up i bet it would have helped some. FML.
  7. If you have a warm dry house with food and hot showers, you can get two chicks, at least the kind that would double up on me. Sugar baby thread over there should have told you that.
  8. You would not want to do that but some have the ability to drain the tanks and carb and/or run it dry. You would still want to start it up and run it at least every couple of months as stuff like that doesn’t like to sit long and you don’t want it to fail when you need it. As for recommendations for a portable unit, IMO Honda sits at the top of the pile and it goes down from there. I bought a $550 3400w Ryobi Inverter generator to use with my RV and it will power all the emergency house loads that I would want.
  9. Since I can’t get back to my house yet to repair and haven’t turned my dads water back on, I spent yesterday ordering shit online and made a couple of hardware store stops when I got out today. Generator breaker interlock kit for my breaker panel, feed breaker, power inlet box and some cable parts. If I was home, I could have temporarily wired my genset into the panel and probably wouldn’t have broken a pipe. Wife would not have been capable of doing that but she should be able to drag it from the storage shed, fuel it, plug it in and get it running if I’m not there. 4 fuel cans with treated non-ethanol gas. Every quarter oldest goes into the car tank then get refilled. Waterbob bags for bathtub water storage. for us and parents households, a couple more 7 gallon water cans too. A good backpacking style water filter. Micropur water treatment tablets Extra 20# propane tanks and a couple of the Mr Heaters Window A/C unit for when shit fails in the summer Some additional led flashlights and lanterns A bunch copper and pex fittings for repairs Some of those freeze misers maybe
  10. What kind of fishing, fresh or salt? Look at either a dual console type or some of the family crossover center consoles. The crossover are kind of new that incorporate more general boating/cruising type features that a typical center console. I have a older 20’ Key West dual console that has served my family week when our kids where growing up. Lots of mid tier manufacturers of both of these styles that will get you in your price range. https://keywestboats.com/our-boats/239-fs https://keywestboats.com/our-boats/239-dfs Old post on my boat
  11. Y’all don’t remember a year or so ago when griddy had just came out and there was a event that temporarily caused wholesale prices to jump way up. There were people on here that got charged big bills because they didn’t realize it and shut off their A/Cs during the spikes. if you sign up for a energy plan that variable or wholesale rate in Tx you better be smart enough to track the rate and take action to eliminate your usage during spike. I mean griddy sent alerts to theirs customers telling prices were going to spike and the change to another company.
  12. If it’s your arm you beat off with, I would head to the ER. Counterpoint: The Stranger for a couple of days before heading in.
  13. I hope you shut off your water if your power/heat is back on an you aren’t there. Mine burst and leaked when thawed, neighbor across the street had a water heater burst and thawed after power came back on and they had left for some reason. Flooded whole house, ruined all floors and parts of the walls.
  14. In lieu of a full transfer switch, see if you can find a generator breaker interlock device for your breaker panel. It is a mechanical interlock that only allows you to switch on a breaker back fed from a generator once the main breaker is off and vise versa. The interlock, input receptacle, back feed breaker and cable can be had for probably less than $250 if you are competent in basic electrical work. Roll the genny out, connect a cable, through the main and let her rip. Small 3kw genset will run most winter time loads in an emergency situation.
  15. Yes they are very easy to work with. If your lines are copper, you might consider getting parts to establish ground across the tees and unions. Per the installation instruction “Sharkbite Universal fitting are not an electrically conductive fitting”
  16. I would be chipping and digging until I uncovered it and turned it off. Shovel, hammer, axe, crowbar, whatever until I had access to it. If you have a busted pipe when it thaws ( like mine did) you need to be able to shut off quickly.
  17. It still snowing/sleeting in Tyler and I haven’t gotten out of the house yet but after call a couple of local hardware stores checking on some plumbing parts and seeing posts on here, I did a preemptive Amazon order just to make sure I would have some parts on hand when I get back to Houston. 1/2 and 3/4 copper and pex fittings and pipe are probably gonna be in short supply in the Tx DIY retail market for the near future.
  18. Interesting the difference in wind and NG comparing 2/8 to 2/14 and how scalable our NG generation is until supply shits bed.
  19. Still at my dads. Just got a call from City of Tyler saying city in on a boil notice now. We killed the water Sunday but cracked it a bit yesterday to refill a tub for flushing water. Good luck.
  20. Some read gallons some read cubic ft. 100ft^3 = your 748 gal.
  21. Do you have a flow indicator on the meter? Mine is still old school dial and it has a small red triangle that rotates if there is the slightest drip or leak. My dads meter has a newer digital readout and shows xxxxx.xx gallons. If it is dripping you can see hundredths of gallon increments
  22. Yes, welcome. You’ve already got the wall open, two sharkbite pex coupler fittings, a 5’ piece of pex and a tubing cutter or hacksaw can fix that in about 10 minutes.
  23. Maybe my sarcasm meter is frozen by being outside jacking with plumbing but this is Uncle Joe level advice. See Col. Cooper’s Rule #2. Correct way to handle trespasser is identify if possible and let sheriff or GW deal with it.
  24. Garage ceiling not supposed to look like this
  25. This is exactly what happened at my house where my wife is by herself. If your pipes freeze and burst, the ice in the line may make a ice plug that keeps it from leaking any water. Once it warms backup the ice plug melts and water flows. I didn’t get any pics but a while my wife was getting the water shut off, water soaked enough of my garage ceiling for a 4’x6’ portion of the Sheetrock to collapse. I would at least make sure I know where the water cutoff is at and have a tool available to cut it off. Mine happened about 4 hrs after the power came back on after being off for 36 hrs.
