  1. About three months post surgery.  Saw doc for final post op appointment today  Pain gone.  Creakier rehab than I thought.  Really lost lots of muscle in one leg.  Slowly bringing it back.  Long sitting spells still a bit uncomfortable.  But doing normal stuff.
Will start increasing the mileage on the bike, which I have avoided.  Going to be a regular at the gym.
Didn't realize how shitty my core was until started PT.  The elastic bands and doing squats on the wobbly were the biggest eye openers.
Who did you end up seeing
  2. One added tip I’d give to consider when flying to California (especially from Dallas) is make sure to check the airfare via Alaska Airlines. Their routes used to all be via Virgin America before Alaska acquired them. I’ve found that Alaska’s flights are often cheaper than Southwest (which seems to be everyone’s default “that’s the cheapest airline” thought) plus you get to choose your seat on Alaska (which is the thing I hate the most about Southwest) and I find their Skywest planes they use on the route to be especially roomy leg-wise. They typically have 3 flights out of Love Field (another plus) every day to at least SFO and LAX. I’ve also caught flights back to Love from San Jose and which can save you an hour or so if you’re coming from Monterey or somewhere south on your last day of the trip.
Thanks MDL. Any thought on best time of year to see the W coast? Cost or weather wise
  3. I'm thinking about scheduling a Cali trip with the wife.  I really want to do Napa (or just a wine region, in general) for a day or two.  All the pics on this and the PB/Monterey threads of Big Sur or where ever are breath taking.  Would it be possible to hit those areas up on a 4-5 day trip?  We would be flying from DAL into anywhere SWA services.  I don't know if it would be best to fly into Oakland and drive up to Napa for those few days, down to Big Sur, and then back to Oakland to return the car/fly home?  Thoughts?  I need to figure out a good itinerary, places to stay, eat, sites.  I would love to do a light morning hike one day that doesn't take all day so we can fit some more things in.

Any strong feelings on strains of St. Augustine?  I'm going to resod the back yard (fairly shaded) and parts of the front (shaded, but less than the back).

Currently at King Ranch turfgrass in South Austin Amerishade is $255/pallet, Floratam is $195, and Raleigh is $165.  We have a fairly clay heavy soil if it makes any difference.

I've got the same issue but have been unsuccessful in getting the SA to take root over the past few years.  I'm thinking just too much shade (needs a minimum of 6 hrs of sun I think).  I've seeded some fescue along the N side of the foundation and it has done quite well over 2 seasons.  What are the thoughts fescue?  For reference, I'm in far North Dallas.

Felt like cooking this weekend since being sober gives you a lot of extra time on your hands.  HEB had pork loin on sale for $1.49/lb - there weren't any decent ones in the case so the butcher brought me a 8.5lb'er from the back. Decided to make this Tuscan pork roast recipe:

    https://www.cooksillustrated.com/recipes/8643-tuscan-style-roast-pork-with-garlic-and-rosemary-arista

Didn't get all the steps documented like making the infused olive oil and the reverse sear at the end, but the result was good.  Would have been great had I not cooked it about 10 minutes too long - I overestimated the amount of time it would take a roast that big to get to 130.  Served with baked sweet potatoes mashed with maple syrup, lemon zest and balsamic vinegar, and sauteed asparagus.

Any chance you can copy/paste this recipe?  Pay wall

  6. tried the reverse sear-my version of it today, on a NY strip.  Awesome! Whoever invented that shit should be a millionaire.  My little adjustment was that my frying pan wasn't hot enough when the steak hit the pan, so I turned the steak twice to get that first side an additional 30 seconds.  Was the best steak I have ever cooked at home, and not close.  Pink but plenty hot.  The steak stayed hot the entire time I ate, which is not always the case.  Most of the time I cooked a steak before I could get it to medium rare but it would be cold by the time I was halfway done.
Got me started thinking, would that technique work on a Chuck Roast?  I really don't see any pitfalls.  I will give it a shot, and instead of one minute on high for the sear, I think I will try 2 minutes each side.  I don't have a thermometer, so I played it by feel today for the strip.  My feel is pretty good, having worked as manager of Luby's cafeteria for 8.5 years a lifetime ago.
I just had a flashback to Luby's.  The best steak I ever cooked I cooked at Luby's.  Two episodes really.  One time there was a ribeye in the cooler that looked like it was about to go bad, so I drenched it with melted butter, and then cooked it.  I put a little pan on top of the steak while it was on the grill.  I wanted to know if that technique worked so I cooked a 2nd ribeye for my dinner, same method.  Melted in my mouth good.   Later I would learn that the famous steak place in Austin-OMG I can't think of the name- cooked their steaks at 500 and soaked with butter.  Ruth's Chris- there it is.
The other Luby's flashback was this: we were trying to get rid of some ribeye's one Saturday night in Sherman, so we cooked them and put them on the counter.  Price was very steep for your typical Sherman resident, and we relied upon the police to help us with high dollar items such as that. (Police got 50% off, and some locations would give food free if policeman entered location during the last half hour-can't remember if it was free in Sherman or not) I guess the police didn't show up that night, so my boss who was absolutely exceptional in creativity, decided we could try to sell the 3 remaining ribeyes the next day, but the rule at Luby's was you have to change the form of the meat.  So, we had Chicken Fried Ribeye.  I was the butcher that Sunday morning, so I put the three leftover ribeyes through the tenderizer a couple or three times and the fry cook did the usual- flour-batter-flour-batter-cracker crumbs.  They came out beautifully, but only two sold.  I took the plunge again- I was such a good food taster- and ate the last Chicken Fried Ribeye--ummmm good!
I still occasionally have Luby's dreams/nightmares, but this was a pretty good series of flashbacks.  I guess when you work a job 14-15 hours a day, it does something to you.  I still know the ingredients for mayo.:   SESOVDM - salt eggs sugar oil vinegar dry mustard.  Whenever I completely forget that I guess I will be ready for the alzheimer's unit.  The wife occasionally gives me a hard time about remembering stuff.
I should call that manager in Sherman and tell him this story.  Last time I checked property tax appraisal records he still lived in Sherman.  Great man.  Like a lot of great Luby's men, he got screwed, starting with that idiot CEO from the clothing business, Barry something- Parker I think.  100% jackass, didn't know what making food entailed.  Wow! I'm tripping.

I know you're asking for recs; however, I'd stick with a good pair over 3 cheaper pairs myself.

A two year old does not respect sunglasses on face, shirt, or head.  Everything is fair game to be thrown, eaten, or ripped apart.  Hence the need for cheapness at this stage of my sunglasses need.  (FWIW, my previous 3 pairs were Raybans and Maui Jims -- I'm not paying that again until I have grown kids)

This rec is suspicious.  They have been blowing up my facebook page for weeks with this brand.  Do you have some and are they legit?  I like the idea that they float for the lake

  8. Any good recommendations? I'm tired of buying expensive pairs only to have them ripped off my head by the toddler and broken. 3 criteria the new ones must meet:

    1 Polarized

2 Somewhat cheap (probably getting 2 or 3)

3 Comfortable (those 90s neon shades kill my ears)

What do y'all do to combat hard water?  Add a Brita filter to you hose?

Also I noticed WalMart is selling chemical guys products.

If you're super hardcore I suppose you could use a filter.  I just wash, then park the car in the garage to give myself a more time to towel dry.

It also makes it a lot easier to shop around from year to year for insurance. I didn't like having to get my mortgage company involved in that decision.

This makes absolutely no sense to me.  I shop insurance companies every year.  I've never had to deal w/ my mortgage company once while switching.  My agent simply sends them the new provider year over year.

I just closed today on a refi, but read this thread too late.  When I asked to opt out of escrow this past week, I was told it was too late and they would have to redo paperwork with my rate lock expiring before then.  It's almost certain that the lender is going to sell my mortgage before the June 1st payment.  When they sell, is that my opportunity to opt out of escrow?

What is all the hype around foam/ Foam cannons? You still have to use soap and water in a bucket to wash it

The more foam in you have, the easier it is for dirt, dust, etc, to get suspended and then wash away, which is great if you're doing a contactless maintenance wash.  If you're doing a contact wash, it decreases the amount of stuff that can be an abrasive while wiping the vehicle.

  12. We've recently booked a trip w/ 6 other families to go to this beach house in/around Galveston.  I haven't been to Galveston in about 25 years and about the same with our fellow travelers.  There will be adults and kids from 3 months old to about 5/6 years old.  What are some good things to do in/around that house? Any decent places to get a bite?  I'm not sure if we're planning on having all meals at the house or if we're going to have a night out.  Is there a grocery store nearby or should we plan to arrive with all groceries in hand?

  13. Washed the wife's car today. First picture is products used.

Washed w/ Chemical Guys Snow Foam Honeydew....smells awesome by the way

    Iron X over the wheels

Clayed with Wolfgang rinseless wash (0.25 oz in distilled water spray bottle)

Wheels -- Mean Green degreaser w/ the Meguires Hot Shine (not a huge fan)

Minor paint correction w/ Chemical Guys VSS with orange pad

Buffed on/off Ultimate Fast Finish sealant

Mother's Back to Black trim dressing (not a fan)

    Vacuumed car

    Armor All Glass Cleaner

    Armor All FreshFX

Looks pretty damn good.  Maybe I'll get a beej.

Lots of bugs and shit all over the front end:  Yeah, it happens.  A shortcut:  spray it all with WD-40, then let it soak for an hour or so.  Then come back and wash the car.

I've heard of this technique but also read that WD-40 can "soften" the paint which can lead to marring if there is any physical touching of the car.  Obviously, I don't think that would be an issue if you're doing contactless wash right after.

When you go to the Rangers game, take a short detour over to Division Brewing off Division Street.@mdleast would recommend Turning Point beer in Bedford.

    https://turningpointbeer.com

In Dallas proper, Peticolas, Community, Noble Rey, Pegasus City, Manhattan Project and Deep Ellum are all around the downtown area. Lakewood and Oak Highlands are good but they're on the far NE end of town.
When you go to Pecan Lodge, stop off at Braindead Brewing.
If you like burgers and are going towards Ft Worth, work in a trip to Fred’s Texas Cafe or Kincaid’s.

Hilarious. I grew up in Bedford. Place turned into a complete dump years after I graduated and we have just moved my folks out of there to prosper this year. AND NOW they open a fucking kickass brewery...in the old #1 Fun Street building of all places.

I have no reason to go back to Bedford, but damn if this place doesn't tempt me
