Looks like Brent Z. beat Looch to the (koolaid) punch:
Recruiting DBs a Fisher specialty, perhaps why Leon O’Neal is exiting
Brent Zwerneman , Houston Chronicle Feb. 28, 2020
COLLEGE STATION – Safety Leon O’Neal always seemed so happy and sassy at Texas A&M, at least based on his social media posts. O’Neal announced via that platform on Thursday night that he intends to exit the Aggies, entering his junior season.
“I want to thank Texas A&M for everything,” O’Neal posted to Twitter. “Every game was one I’ll never forget. Win, lose or draw, the 12th Man never lost (its) spirit. I want to thank my brothers for the love and support. Our bond will last forever.
“I have now placed myself in the transfer portal.”
When his football days are done, O’Neal needs to consider public relations. Talk about getting out ahead of an uncomfortable subject. The announcement came as a surprise to most outside the Bright Football Complex, but truth is third-year coach Jimbo Fisher has loaded up on defensive backs in his short time at A&M.
Keeping in mind entering the NCAA transfer portal doesn’t always mean a transfer (with A&M tight end Glenn Beal as Exhibit A over the holidays). But it probably does.
Since that time Fisher has hauled in a slew of highly-recruited defensive backs, including four-star signees Demani Richardson (who started in 2019), Erick Young and Brian Williams in the class of 2019, and five-star Jaylon Jones and four-stars Antonio Johnson and Joshuah Moten in the class of 2020.
While some of those additions are cornerbacks, the positions have at times been interchangeable, especially if a coach is trying to get more speed on the field in situations.
In addition, O’Neal was listed as a co-starter with soon-to-be-senior Keldrick Carper at the tail end of last season, and the coaches are confident Carper can spend plenty of time on the field if needed. He’s also one of the clear-cut team leaders.
O’Neal, who on Feb. 21 declared “I’m the best safety in the country” via Twitter, might not have been on the field as much in 2020 with so much competition. He recruited like crazy via social media and other means to his own class and then future classes, so Aggies should appreciate those efforts no matter his destination.
In the end a program will get a witty player best known for his zingers off the field, although he wound up with 55 tackles and two interceptions over two seasons.
