  1. 12 is one more than 11, so it's even better.
  2. No, it was an ultralight, like a hang glider with an engine and prop hung from it. They look fun until you think about the prop catching up to you.
  3. In 1980 my Marine Reserve unit was in Houston on Old Spanish Trail. We were in formation facing a big empty field behind the reserve center and this little experimental ultralight craft took off about 200 yards away. The guy pulled back too hard, went straight up, stalled, and then nosedived straight into the ground from about 200 feet up. The sound of the crash and the knowledge that the engine was right behind him has stuck with me all this time. Someone wondered aloud about the last thing that went through the pilot's mind, and one of the Vietnam vets said that it was probably the prop. My paternal grandmother had a heart attack in front of most of the family and died as my little brother and I did CPR on her, with my dad freaking out behind us. We were told by the ER doctor that they couldn't have saved her if she was in the ER with a doctor right there when it happened, but that doesn't help. I have occasional bad dreams about that.
  4. Maybe he's on Apollo 11. Besides, CO2 has more O, so it has to be twice as bad, now doesn't it?
  5. When you wet them and put them on the windshield or any other glass they stick almost like they were epoxied on. They are very hard to remove, and they leave a residue that's hard to remove. I haven't seen them applied to painted surfaces, but I imagine that the stick to those just as well, and may damage the paint when removed.
  6. Show up for Marine Corps basic training named Yamajesty and you are going to catch more shit than you ever dreamed could exist.
  7. What passes for "Texas Pride" is people now living taking credit for the whitewashed, mythologized, and usually dubious actions of others over 100 years ago.
  8. Construction contractors are horrible slobs, so the trash you are seeing may not strictly be because of the city/county. Many contracts require the contractor to do the clean-up after construction is finished, but if the contracting entity doesn't ride their ass and hold their feet to the fire, they'll cut their costs by skipping the clean-up.
  9. Still weird to see the Jolly Rogers markings on anything other than an F-4 or F-14. Yes, I'm old. Still one of my favorite tail markings, whatever it is on.
  10. Yeah, upon further reflection I think a can of sardines in the front vent or some jolly ranchers stuck to the windshield are better options. If one must go for the paint, polka dotting the hood and doors with Barbasol works well, as I found out the day after my wedding.
  11. That vehicle needs some long, wavy key scratches. Lots of them.
  12. Yeah, I occasionally click on it for news, but end up sifting through a ton of shit for a milligram of news. I'm not a smart man.
  13. According to my GP and others whom I've seen about my back, back surgeries are tricky, and more frequently than I'm comfortable with result in no improvement or even further degradation. Right now it hurts infrequently enough and I have enough range of motion that I don't want to risk surgery that may or may not give me relief and full range of motion. As things progress, that may change. The brother who had the diskectomy had about the same amount of pain for a while after the surgery, and got a little better range of motion. As I understand it, the pain is still low, but he doesn't have the same range of motion. He also still gets back pain at about the same frequency that I do. That's less frequent than before, but still uncomfortable. Unless you have an injury, back pain is largely caused by carrying too much weight in the front. And too much weight in the front often causes back injury, or makes one more prone to back injury. My brother and I both (he more successfully than I) have greatly improved our back problems by losing weight, stretching, and working our cores. I think that it has helped us both more than surgery would.
  14. I've discussed that with my doctor. He doesn't recommend it now, but may in the future. One of my brothers had it done and got very mixed results, so I'll just wait.
  15. I have a ruptured disk that intermittently does this to me. Sometimes it's like your case, temporary and low duration, and sometimes it lasts a week or more. Sucks, but nothing I can do about it.
  16. My niece's fiancé brought this back from Rwanda for me recently. It is delicious, but a little goes a looooong way.
  17. Maybe by the time it gets through the atmosphere it will only be the size of a chihuahua's head.
  18. If you're wondering where the laid off/fired government employees are going to go, who do you think will be expected to build our buildings, pick and process our food, and bus our tables after the deportations are done?
  19. Gotta love a mugshot with that kind of joy in her face.
  20. The smell of freshly mowed wild onions.
  21. That just proves that there's no damn excuse for the mail to be slow.
  22. I'm very sorry for your loss, Brisket. It sounds like your dad was an awesome man. I wish that I could have known him. RIP, Papa Brisket.
  23. "Wah!! A guy who's supposed to be objective didn't suck our dick on national TV! Then he didn't apologize for not making us happy! Wah!!" Silly aggy.
