  1. Sul Ross claimed to be the one who found Cynthia Ann Parker, but I read an account somewhere that another Ranger actually recognized her and took her into custody. When this was communicated to Ross, he took her and started telling folks that he, not the other Ranger, was the one to recover her. Charles Goodnight, who was a Rnger in that fight, saw that and never had a good thing to say about Ross afterwards. I've also seen the rumor that Goodnight was the Ranger who recognized Parker and had Ross steal his thunder. I wish I could remember where I saw that.
  2. Russia already "annexed" Crimea and claims it as Russian territory, and the Ukrainians haven't hesitated to attack assets there. Ukraine, backed by the US and UK, have said the the liberation of Crimea and all currently occupied Ukrainian territory is the end goal of their operation. Russia "annexing" the other occupied territories of Ukraine won't matter one damn bit. Ukraine will keep attacking.
  3. Another opportunity for the Abrams to show its complete superiority to Russian tanks. Let 'er rip.
  4. Sorry, I can't brag about that.
  5. Get well soon, man.
  6. Not entirely accurate about the amount of aid, but hilarious none the less.
  7. Hey, Girki: Don't start none, won't be none. Now take your licks like a man.
  8. As amazing as the Kharkiv offensive has been, there is still a lot of fighting left to clear the remaining occupied territory. The Kherson offensive seems to be grinding forward slowly, and the Kharkiv offensive is moving into the consolidation phase, slowing or stopping forward movement, at least temporarily. There are still western weapons systems that are not deployed in the Ukrainian Army, and a lot more Ukrainians to train. Obviously there are unknown actions planned by both sides, and the possibility exists that the Russian forces collapse and rapidly retreat or surrender, but successful generals have a plan for a long haul. We need to prepare ourselves for a long winter, some Ukrainian setbacks, and an even more active 2023. I still believe, more strongly than ever, that Ukraine will win all of their territory back, but it ain't over until the fat lady sings. As a wise man in a movie once said, let's don't go sucking each other's dicks just yet.
  9. I am mighty tempted to say Ukraine should respond by reciprocating and hitting Bolgorad, Kursk, and other Russian cities in range of HIMARS and destroying their infrastructure. I would rather Ukraine continue to concentrate on the Russian Army until they are all dead or gone from Ukrainian territory. Again, Russia shows that they are better terrorists than soldiers, and they know it.

  11. Praying for your daughter and your family, Shooter. It's hard when something is hurting our kids and Daddy can't fix it. What you can do is support her and be there for her. The advances in cancer treatment are about a nanometer short of miraculous, and the whole catalog is fixing to bet thrown at the evil attacking your daughter. Be there and help her through the rough days, and y'all got this. And I second the suggestion that you need to moderate the drinking, if not cut off completely for a while. It doesn't really help much, and your family doesn't need another problem to deal with. My 2 cents.
  12. Why does he sound like a seagull? He's too cute.
  13. Fair point that I hadn't considered.
  14. Now for something completely different: I can't find it now, but in the comments on one of the Tweets someone called the Ukrainian offensive the Blyatskrieg. Tickled my funnybone.
  15. That's not going to improve Putler's rationality. Hang onto your butts.
  16. I counted thirteen men in the top Tweet. I'm not familiar with the TO&E of a Russian motorized rifle platoon, but that's a squad in my old assed Marine infantry days, 1/3 of a platoon. If that's all that's left, damn.
  17. I cut my own hair, so I check the top and sides with a mirror to make sure it's cut evenly. I saw it a couple of months ago and asked my wife to help me keep an eye on it. I then asked my family doctor about it at my next checkup a few weeks later. He referred me to a dermatologist who took the biopsy, then the dermatologist referred me to an ENT guy who did the cutting. I really think he did a good job, I just didn't have a frame of reference on what to expect. My dad has had several basal cell and melanoma tumors cut off of his head and face, so since I get about as much sun as he has, I figured I had better keep an eye out. I don't fuck with cancer. That shit (esophageal, not skin) took my mom when she was just 53.
  18. That was pretty funny. I enjoy malapropisms, and that was a good one, I thought.
  19. "Navel" news? Damn. Real story, though. When my wife was teaching a college course as a GA, she had a student who was utterly crushed that he had been passed over for an appointment to Annapolis and said he had been told that his essay on why he should get the appointment was the cause. Since it was an English writing class he asked her to review it and give him pointers, as he was going to try again. In the first sentence he said something like, "I should be appointed to a position in the 1991 class at the U. S. Navel Academy because..." When she pointed his mistake out to him, he barfed in her trashcan. Poor kid never got an appointment, but he did get a decent degree, so I guess it worked out for the best.
  20. Sounds like it's HIMARS o'clock. Get cracking, guys!
  21. I also think that Russia also thought that Biden would be too weak to lead a response and that Boris Johnson would not respond the way that he did. Looking at it from Putin's point of view: 1. Zelensky looked too weak to rally Ukraine, Biden too weak to lead an international response, and Europe too divided to assist Ukraine. 2. Russia had Europe by the short hairs energywise, with no apparent alternatives that were economically feasible. 3. He had many Ukrainians bought and acting on his direction. He thought that they would all stay bought. 4. He had a powerful fighting force in position to execute a decent invasion plan. 5. He had to go before any of these conditions changed. He failed because too many of his assumptions were based on hope, not fact.
  22. Worst Michael Jackson impression ever.
  23. I got a melanoma removed from the top of my head yesterday. I caught it early, and the doctor said that it is only in the outer layer of skin, so it was removed in his office. I expected a relatively small excision and a couple of stitches. I have a six inch rift going across the top of my head with I don't know how many stitches and a headache like nobody's business today. I didn't sleep well last night because of the pain and worrying about pulling the bandage off, so I am a grumpy, sleepy mess right now. Still better than leaving a melanoma to go wild and kill me. Wear a hat and long sleeved shirt and use sunscreen, y'all. You don't want this.
  24. Check with a doctor. It could be rhabdomyolysis, which can cause kidney damage. I'm not a doctor, don't play one on TV, and didn't stay at Holiday Inn. I did have a coworker get rhabdomyolysis and have a bit of a hard time with it.
