  1. A couple of weeks ago I was introduced to ranch dill pickles, and now I am addicted.
  2. An offensive like this can cut both ways. If the Russians can stop the Ukrainians and throw them back, they would want to keep the pressure on and counterattack wherever Ukraine is weakest. Russia could be trying to reinforce to hold, set the situation to allow a withdrawal, or reinforce to throw back the Ukrainians and take the offensive themselves. If I were in charge of the Russian forces, I would try for going on the counterattack. With their logistical difficulties, it may be the best option. See also Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain at Little Round Top during the Battle of Gettysburg.
  3. A pleasant thought just occurred to me: since Putin has shoved Shoigu aside and taken direct overall control over operations in Ukraine, if this offensive is successful, the responsibility is all his. Politically, logistically, and operationally. To steal a line: he remains a genius.
  4. Ok, Ukraine. Time to fuck up some trains.
  5. I want to believe, but the guy who is supposed to be surrounded sounds pretty calm and rested, there's no background noise, and the signal sounds remarkably good for not having much left in the way of comms. It sounds too staged. I am skeptical.
  6. We don't know that it has happened yet. Such maneuvers take some time, especially with the number of forces involved and the terrain. With the operational security that Ukraine is trying to enforce, we may not know that it has happened until well after it is completed. Patience, man, patience.
  7. Does Kenneth Copeland know that's missing from his dresser drawer?
  8. Maybe some of the oligarchs see the writing on the wall and deal with him first. You know, Do unto others before they do unto you. What moron would fly over this war zone now? The world knows that Russia would shoot down a civilian airliner in a heartbeat.
  9. Yep, same thing: emblem of a loser.
  10. That would be a damn big drone.
  11. If A-10s could mount a full suite of SEAD/DEAD equipment, yes, I think they would make a big difference. Otherwise, they are sitting ducks. Even in Dessert Storm, where we had air supremacy, A-10s had to fly above 10,000 feet due to SAMs and AAA. That cut down on their brrrrt ability by a lot.
  12. The real question, and crux of this battle, is can Russia launch a big counterattack to try to break through to them? With the river in the way and how HIMARS o'clock has been eroding Russian supplies and equipment, I don't think that they can. ETA - This doesn't mean that Russia won't try, nor that Russia won't do something else, like shoot cruise missiles at Kyiv or Odessa.
  13. Something tells me that the Russians will see that ammo again, but not static in boxes. Get some, Ukraine!
  14. Ice makers are just one more thing to break and have to repair. Besides, I'm in the wrong Surly 1%.
  15. People who don't refill the ice trays when they get ice. C'mon, it isn't hard to put water in trays and put them back in the freezer.
  16. Or any meeting that you organize and schedule. I had an engineer on a project who would schedule progress meetings or meetings to go over technical problems that arose on the project, then be at least 15 minutes late to his own meeting. I had to call and remind him of one of these meetings. Asshole wasted hours of other folks' time. And my employer still hires him for projects, but not mine.
  17. The Poles have always been badasses. The geography of Poland makes defending Poland very difficult. Germany and Russia have meddled in Polish politics for centuries, influencing and directing events to their individual and mutual benefit, but the Polish military has generally been top notch. Read up on who saved Vienna from the Ottomans. When I was a young Marine mortarman, we learned about the Soviet and Warsaw Pact forces. The Poles were always mentioned as equal to the best Soviet and East German forces. On top of that, Polish intelligence was the class of the Warsaw Pact, even better than the Stasi. Don't sleep on the Poles.
  18. Doesn't matter; the cake and candles melt before you get to them anyway.
  19. Looks like someone was unhappy with the divorce settlement.
  20. I was going to comment that the Guard troops probably appreciate the fresher MREs. And the troops in Korea must feel better about having fresher ammo.
  21. The thought occurred to me that someone may have lit up a cigarette or stogie and set off the smoke alarm, too. But, yes, stupidity is deeply involved, just because of where it happened.
  22. I think some dumbass pulled the fire alarm and doesn't want to own up. That or detection of an actual fire seem, to me, to be about the only ways to set off all the sprinklers and the announcement.
  23. Yeah, the bitch wasn't hollering stop when her punks were jumping the big man. Momma needs to shut the fuck up and let her crotch goblins learn the lesson.
  24. Scheduling a meeting after 11:00 am on Friday.
  25. If they had the valor and honor to eat a bullet, they would have had the valor and honor to take out the shooter quickly. They are entirely bereft of valor, honor, and both physical and moral courage.
