  1. I mean, why would they even need to? If countries keep extra dollars around just to trade with us, why not spend those same dollars on each other?
  2. I am not so sure. IIRC the best time in relatively recent Mexican history was from the 40s to the 70s when I believe they were running inside their own economic bubble. Maybe some uncouth Gringo flailings revive the almost religious pride in doing things that way, instead of the current "do backflips for money." It is Mexico, and we are us, so given our mutual track record I expect to be disappointed.
  3. RDCanecutter-style Vulture-Picking-at-the-Carcass investment opportunities comin up y'all.
  4. I may switch to a Costco CC if I ever murder my current one. Until then it'd be like a character from Trainspotting buying extra heroin. I do see several gold and silver options on my Costco app. All are online only. No prob with that, ordering looks pretty simple. Bottom line is I think that the shiny is just generally too high right now to sink thousands into it with the hopes of making a few percent back at year's end. Would be happy to be wrong. In other plans, my next silver dump will be Canadian 1960s silver, but only if silver hits 35. (Arbitrary number I pulled out of the air.) It's from when $5 Canadian = 3 troy oz. ASW. I will undergo the ceremonial dealer poor-mouth about "People around here don't buy that" from guys who sell every Canadian silver coin they get. Or maybe it won't hit 35. Sore-ry.
  5. Also, lots of the best (price paid) dealers are technophobes. They work over the phone (talking on it, like animals) or verbally. Their websites, if they have one, may be straight off the Wayback Machine. It's its own crusty culture, just how it is.
  6. I need some ICE pointers should I be questioned. I am King of the White Race so I figure I can get away with anything. Once. 1. Am I required to speak English? My Spanish is pretty fly for a White Guy. Maybe only speak with the Hispanic Mordor Orcs who assist the Uruk Crackers? Seems like putting my safety in the brittle masculinity of an agent could be interesting, like how the Japanese prison guards would choose the tallest Americans to beat half to death. 1b. Or maybe should I keep it in Scottish Gaelic? Family names tell me that's a legit, honest option. Zero clowning, answer questions 100% to the best of my ability, in Scottish Gaelic. Not my fault Officer McSomething has a Sasanach soul. 2. Or maybe just sorta lie down.
  7. Now, why we gotta insult an actual currency? 😛
  8. I don't get it. I enjoy planting okra and cherry tomatoes. For the rest, we recently finished up needed repairs on the garage and the roof. Our neighbors mostly bought new cars. Hope the guys who did our work are back safely hanging around the Green River in the Huasteca with savings in their pockets.
  9. Just when you think you know Peggy Hill...
  10. A'ight I just got the "executive" membership to Costco, and now I fully expect my phone to start blowing up with offers of gold under spot price. Which I resell 15 minutes later, for more. What are the cool kid tricks for doing this? How do you know when it's on sale? Is it only in-store, or can you order it online?
  11. Counterpoint: considering the alcoholism and PTSD, those old numbers are way better than you'd think.
  12. That dude is gonna pull with the "I-gwas-deported, I -am-so longly" schtick.
  13. Basically, Early George Wallace the place.
  14. If the guy had any Dos Equis Man in him, he'd sell all his crap and go live like a baron (rookies live like kings) in Venezuela with his Lady Love, and maybe grill out with local politicians that he very tastefully cultivates as friends.
  15. You're doing it wrong. Enter the Buc-ee's. Peruse the goods. Spend an extra hour in there everytime they want to stop. Be the one who makes them hate the place.
  16. I've got a feeling she won't stay lonely.
  17. I hope you can take something he told you, showed you, or gave you to help you make it through this time.
  18. This changes everything.
  19. Back to trivial shit like the food supply, I've seen this movie before. We had an unusually gumpy state senator named Scott Beason, who possessed the reverse Midas touch of turning everything to shit. One of his deeds was to wreck the picking of tomatoes. (another was to harass a cleaning lady at Miles College by turning her water off, but he doesn't know that.) Beason is a dead-squirrel toupee-wearing churchy-chik-fil-a drip. He finally got voted out, in Alabama, after being too bone-headedly doctrinaire. https://www.al.com/wire/2011/10/chandler_mountain_farmers_comp.html After talking with farmers at the tomato shed, Beason visited the Smith family's farm. Leroy Smith, Chad Smith's father, challenged the senator to pick a bucket full of tomatoes and experience the labor-intensive work. Beason declined but promised to see what could be done to help farmers while still trying to keep illegal immigrants out of Alabama. Smith threw down the bucket he offered Beason and said, "There, I figured it would be like that."
  20. Aptera: a wingless parthenogenetic female aphid that lives on the definitive host plants producing other generations of like aphids and later a generation of alates (Merriam-Webster)
  21. Poverty is a feature of fascism.
  22. @troph certain coins, eg American Eagles, Mexican Libertads, maybe some others, get you a better price when you sell, quite likely over spot. Also, I'd call everybody. You can see a 10% difference in payout just by doing recon. The best paying coin store here is a simple hole in the wall. The big one that claims to offer the most is about 3rd on the list. I would take it slow and also see if anything has numismatic mark-up, ie rare coins that have been graded. Those should bring you extra $ if you're not in a hurry.
  23. Think I'll roll down to Waffle House and have some eggs today. After I get dressed.
