  1. Gabriel's setting is good when she doesn't have to run set...but with the way Iosia, Logan, Parra, and Petersen were passing and digging up balls tonight, her setting was trash.

This is where this team is sorely missing Morgan O'Brien - she was able to consistently dig up a ball right to target, where Gabriel didn't have to move.

This is taught, that's why we see PAC 12/BIG liberos have excellent ball control.  Jerritt teaches them to just dig a hard-driven ball up off the net (even if it puts the team out-of-system) to give the setter an opportunity to just throw it up to the left pin hitter.

That's been his system and why he needs high-flying jumpers on the left pin.

She was the next big thing at setter, no?

I'm pretty sure she was the #1 setter in her class.

She enrolled early in the Spring 2020 to get a head start, but then the pandemic happened.  Then she was injured all last Fall, and played sparingly last Spring...

So, is Cabello a flameout then?

She's setting better this year and offers a better block at the net, but she's still slow getting her feet to the ball when setting and her floor defense is meh.

    I think she's gonna be Shook 2.0

I think they had to just about beg O’Brien to play last year, since it seemed she had accepted her career being over - she graduated from Illinois a year early, despite being the starting libero. Looking back, I wonder if Elliott knew she wasn’t going to return because he gave Iosia the chance to play libero quite a bit after Morgan got COVID.

It is looking like Parra is playing well in the back row this second set.

I wonder if Elliott will try the 6-2 at all this match

Not sure if a 6-2 would be ideal.  Need really good passing from Parra and Logan all 6 rotations for it to work effectively.

Uggggh.  Seriously, though.  I was so spoiled by Morgan and I don't think I can handle a reversion to our back row/passing mean.

Maybe Iosia can grow into the role.

Iosia makes great saving plays...but her passing technique isn't that great.  And Elliot isn't known for developing Liberos.

    I didn't know Morgan wasn't coming back.

My interest in the season just took a nosedive.

Yeah, Morgan was the difference maker last year...Never have I seen Texas be in-system and run it's offense so consistently...and I've been watching TX Volleyball for a very long time.

    Parra the next 6-rotation player?

That's what she was recruited for as she was the youngest OH for the Mexican National Team.

But she doesn't fit Texas' system TBH with it's current hitters/blockers on the roster.

Parra is a huge liability in this match. Just yank her in set 2 for Petersen

Petersen subs for Molly in the back row...but yeah, if Melanie can't play her role as a DS, might as well put Heinrich in, but Jerritt won't do that.

  9. Texas just received a transfer from a 6'0 setter from the University of Utah.  Saige was the starting setter for the past 2 seasons and helped Utah reach the Sweet 16 this season.

Saige is going to bring lots of experience from playing in the PAC 12 as well as provide a bigger setter block in the front row.  We won't be seeing opposing hitters hitting over her like they have been with Jhenna the past 3 years.

Hopefully, she quickly develops a good connection with all the Texas hitters, especially with setting Brionne in front and Asjia on the slide attack.

Unfortunately, Morgan O'Brien has left the team to focus on graduate school...but maybe she reconsiders with everyone that is returning...she really anchored and elevated the backrow.

  10. Avery Skinner from UK (Katy, TX) is rumored to be grad transferring to Baylor and has recently followed several of the players...seems she wants to see if she can win 2 National Championships on 2 different teams.

Penn State just picked up 2 grad transferring OHs who were multi-year starters at Minnesota and Maryland who are going to give them the ball-control and hitting that their current OHs lacked.

Is it bad that I’m hoping for Elliott to bring in an elite, taller setter transfer?

Jhenna did really well, but I don’t think our system is built for a short setter to play front row for us to take home the prize...even Chloe Collins who had major hops for her height (5’7) couldn’t bring in a Natty after 2 attempts...and Jhenna is the same height (with a shorter block reach).  Their blocks ultimately get abused by the the opposing team’s OHs.

And Naomi looks like she gonna need a lot more work to be setting full-time.  Her OOS setting unfortunately reminds of Shook’s and we all now how that went.

Texas has all the pieces to win it all next year, except setter IMO.

I get grumpy as hell this time every year. Dammit.

Yeah, but the 2017-2019 seasons were all really disappointing.

At least this year, they made it the the NC match and actually shored up the back row and serving...still not elite, but SO much better than what it has been the past several seasons.  Plus, they showed a lot of grit beating Penn State, Nebraska, and Wisconsin. No one thought we would make it out of our bracket when it first came out.

I just want them to continue improving their passing and back row play for next season.  Elite hitters will neutralize the Texas block, so back row play HAS to always get better. They are at least at a good starting point.

I think the biggest question mark will be setting...does Elliott continue to let Gabriel run the team?  She’s probably the most improved player and plays great defense, but the past 3 seasons have shown what teams with good setting and terminal left pin hitters can do with her up front. Hell, teams were doing the same thing with Chloe Collins and she was a better leaper than Jhenna.

If Logan and Melanie play 6 rotations, Skylar on the right with Nalani DSing for her in the back row, Bri/Asjia/Molly battling it out to start in the middle, and O’Brien in the black jersey, they could run a 5-2 system where Jhenna plays back row and Cabello plays in the front row. That might be one of the better line-ups to develop this summer and run it in the fall.

They also were going after another libero, Fleck from UCSB, who chose UCLA.  Then we got lucky finding MOB already at Texas

Yeah, Elliott was going hard after Fleck after the 2019 melt-down season...but she chose UCLA.

    O’Brien fell into Texas’ lap.

Petersen going from libero to 3rd DS off the bench, shows the level of incompetence Elliott has showed in the developing the back row in his tenure...
