  1. Well, he did spend millions of dollars chasing cases of voter fraud only to find a handful of cases. Then when he tried to prosecute to save face and justify the wasteful efforts, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals (all Rs) dismissed the cases because, as @TwiceHorn points out, he lacks constitutional authority to pursue criminal cases unilaterally. But he goes on MAGA talk shows and brags about how he's nipped voter fraud in the bud, and without his efforts, Texas would be just like one of those hot mess states like Georgia and Pennsylvania. And dipshits believe him. So there's that.
  2. I was 37. Mine was also minor and just on my legs, but it was very painful. Getting my vaccine as soon as I turn 50. I think that's the minimum age it's approved?
  3. This is pretty much exactly my story. I think our kids have turned out to be kind and empathetic people, and we've always told them that if they ever have an interest in seeing what church is all about, we'd support them 100%. And yet every time I hear some snide, judgmental comment from one my parents' church friends about how we are not religious and therefore not good people, it confirms for me that we've made the right choice sparing the kids that aspect of it. It amazes me that, with shrinking congregations across the country, some churches continue to double down on exclusionary teachings and practices. From a purely business standpoint, you'd think they'd be trying to grow membership.
  4. How should we expect APD to focus on crime when they have their hands full with elderly deaf women trying to fly home? https://www.austinchronicle.com/news/2023-03-24/austin-jailer-breaks-elderly-deaf-womans-arm-after-misunderstanding-at-airport/
  5. Reporting was that the defense did not object to the juror's dismissal. They whined about it, but that isn't the same as an objection and ruling on the record.
  6. Watched it last night. I've been following the story from early on, but the wow-moment for me was how shady the whole fucking family was/is. Maggie was all in on protecting her son and her lifestyle. Alex's dad and brothers are just as horrible and complicit in covering up Alex's and his sons' bullshit, yet the brothers gave an interview to ABC News early on pretending to be shocked and horrified by all of the dirty laundry coming to light. I think the whole law firm is dirty, and the only reason they cut Alex loose was to shield the rest of their shit from being exposed. And man, I feel so sorry for the kids who survived that boat crash.
  7. Our Council Member posted her attempt of an explanation for our outages on Nextdoor, which a friend set me last night. Basically, if you're north of 29th, AE can't figure out why you don't have power yet. If you're south of 29th, you're fucked for a while.
  8. I might murder someone. Fucking Monday.
  9. AE has texted twice that the power is back on when it's not, so we're having to re-report outages. The five trucks here last night are nowhere in sight. Zero expectation that they get power restored this weekend.
  10. I hope neither of you is on Wooldridge between 29th and Claire. Same neighborhood, and we've had a flurry of activity down the street. One AE guy told my neighbor that they can't understand why it's not coming back on. So here we are in night three of hotel living.
  11. Neither. Not sure what aspect of the coverage it falls under (not a coverage lawyer), but it looks like it's a payable claim as long as you're not claiming other property damage to the home from the storm or power outage. I claimed $500.
  12. Homeowners policy might cover your food spoilage. Made a claim on mine (USAA) yesterday, and they paid it right away.
  13. We did the same thing. Never seen this neighborhood so quiet and dark with no street lights even. Just the gas lanterns and a few well-prepared houses with a generator.
  14. Sounds like that'll pay for 100 miles of buried lines. Start with the big ones that take out entire neighborhoods when they go down. Coming up on 34 hours with no power.
  15. Yes, I'm willing to cut them some slack (talking management, not the line workers who should get all the praise). I get that you can't identify every branch that could possibly affect a power line. And I get the cost prohibitive ideas to bury power lines. But I'm exhausted by the predictability of it all and the waiting for someone to take charge. For example, the line that runs behind our house for four blocks routinely loses power -- either a transformer that blows or some other age-related excuse. Sometimes AE fixes it within an hour with what appears to be a band-aid; many times it's days. The neighborhood association asks AE and our Council Member for help getting trees trimmed and equipment updated. Sure, we'll look into it, they say. Like many of life's ills, the best medicine is prevention. Yet it feels like this is mostly just a slowly reactive agency. Yes, budget. Yes, staffing. But no vision or plan.
  16. At this rate, I question whether Austin Energy even has a plan other than "get in line." After 13+ hours of no power (and checking the family into a hotel because we've learned our lesson), we just got a text informing us that "there may be an outage affecting our address," and asking us to report if the power is still out. Oh, wait... So I'm thankful that the family is safe and warm in a hotel room for the night, but I know many are not as fortunate. WTF are we doing? It's 2023, and we can't proactively mitigate tree limbs crippling the city? We can't expect accurate and timely information from the utility that has many of us by the balls? I'll return to my hotel wine and see myself out.
  17. Booking a hotel room. Zero chance we get power back before dark.
  18. I think Cronk gets too much of a pass. He was hired to bring to Austin what he got done in Minneapolis: effectively end single-family zoning. We all know what a total shitshow the Land Development Code rewrite attempts have been and how divisive his and his allies' approach is. That's been almost his entire focus, although he's responsible for managing city operations. Issues with APD, the homeless population problems, and ABIA power outages and non-TSA/FAA staffing problems are just a few recent examples of his incompetent management skills. The buck should stop with him but that motherfucker just got rewarded with a raise. He needs to go.

I agree on the Mayfair Chippy rec. Another good one close by is Delfino Mayfair on Mount St. Really good pizza -- and still my kids' very favorite Thanksgiving meal ever.
  20. Save the trip to Monterey for another time because 17-Mile Drive and some the piers look jacked up. Plenty of good suggestions above to keep you busy for a weekend visit to the area. Ghirardelli Square is good for kids. You can catch the Powell/Hyde Cable Car from nearby.
  21. While the Idaho officials are keeping things tight, a few details are starting to leak from the PA authorities and others, including the allegation that he stalked these girls for weeks. He was also a creep to women who worked at a brewery and rejected his advances. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11589659/Bryan-Kohberger-went-teaching-University-Idaho-murders.html
