  1. I mean, it's an interesting discussion, and I probably came a little hot there, but the thing to realize is that the only reason for all the eastward voyages was no one knew yet exactly how far to the west you would have to go. People did sail west, and had been doing so for quite some time since the Vikings and maybe earlier. The thing Columbus did was sail west specifically to get to the East Indies. Which of course he totally fucked up. Remember everyone knew this pretty quickly after he hit the Caribbean, Magellan went all the way around just a few decades later. And it was all because Spain was racing Portugal to get there faster. Columbus or not they were sending people there as quickly as that could, there absolutely no way America lies undetected for another century if Columbus doesn't show up. The question isn't really about Pre-Columbian expeditions, but Pre-Columbian contact where it becomes a big question if anyone came before him from Europe. Remember we are talking about this in context of hitting North America, not whether anyone was trying for the East Indies.
  2. That is an insane sentence and you know it. They were launching people westward like a t shirt cannon at exhibition basketball game.
  3. I'm not making a political discussion either, or saying what he did did not have far reaching consequences for us all, I'm saying he didn't really have achievements, he had dumb luck and doesn't deserve accolades for sailing to the wrong fucking continent. And that's fine. We can acknowledge he was consequential without making up shit like he was particularly skilled, because he wasn't.
  4. Haha, epic
  5. I'm not moving anything, I'm framing what Columbus did in a proper manner. If he didn't land here some other euro would have stumblefucked his way over at some point. He's just not as consequential as you want him to be.
  6. Well Leif Erikson did, but you are pointing out exactly what I'm saying. His accomplishment wasn't navigating, it was staying alive that long. And that was not as impressive as the Polynesians who crossed much bigger expanses of ocean long before Columbus was a twinkle in his momma's eye.
  7. Yeah I'm aware of what dead reckoning is, you learn it in beginning navigation course when you are like 12 years old. It's the all else fails option. There's a reason we call them the trade winds, and why they ended up in the Caribbean. He didn't really navigate much of anything, he just got blown there and home by default. There was not any precision navigation going on here, use a compass and vaguely wonder in that direction and that's about it.
  8. I am heartened to see so many young people moshing again.
  9. Why are young people such fucking dorks these days.
  10. The whole I didn't expect this has become such a meme I can barely laugh at it anymore.

  13. As someone who regularly navigates the ocean by sailing vessel, I'm going to disagree with your detective work there Lou.
  14. Thiel has been looney for a loooong time. My armchair analysis is autism plus self hating homosexuality that he can't reconcile with his weird christian beliefs = nutbar.
  15. My son is a little old for this thankfully, but I have heard of it via my wife from other parents

  17. I mean, Gwen Stefani has always been pretty trife, but I'm not exactly sure what this thread is about. Bands play shows last I checked.

I'm not the most mega Wet Leg fan or anything, but 'catch these fists' has to be one of my favorite song titles of all time.
  19. Thanks my friend. As with the other one, it's actually a 20 year old song, our goal has been to take some of the better stuff to commit to posterity. The next track may be another old one, or maybe a new one, not sure yet. I have an old one in the can, but we are tracking a newer one tonight in fact that I am pretty eager to get out. You have heard the rough demo of it funny enough, but now it will have actual drummers and bassists playing which should enhance the quality to put it mildly.
