  1. My S550 had the air suspension go out over time. Had an independent shop do each corner for $800 per. MBs are well known for this failure. AMG package had 20" wheels that were 275 in the rear and 235 in the front. Never got 15000 miles on a set. So about every 1/1.5 years there went $2000 for tires. Other than that, no real complaints. It has been my favorite sedan.

    Tax reform

Limited Partnership guy here. A substantial reduction in overall tax burden for 2018. But I thought the 39.6+% marginal rate was too high in 2017 and damn near intolerable.

    Getting old sucks

Last year I was hauling a deer out of the woods and after pulling it up out of a ditch, felt a slight burning in my crotch, off to the side and close to my belt line. Next day, saw a small bump there. A week or so later, the bump was bigger and I could push it in, feel the squish as the intestine went back in the wall, and all would be good. It would go for a week or so, then bump out again. Then it got to be an every day thing. Called my cousin who is a general surgeon. He told me over the phone that it was an inguinal hernia. Be at his office the next day at 7 a.m. and he would confirm, fix it and send me home by lunch. He put in an internal rubber gasket that uses internal pressure to keep a seal and then sewed a mesh liner into wall. Home by mid afternoon and felt ok. Got pretty sore a couple of days later, then no problems. Back in action with the wife in a week(no pic). I am 57 and getting old does suck.
  4. Jeffrey's has gone from overrated in my opinion to great again. Ate there 2 nights ago and meal was fantastic. Deviled eggs with shaved truffles for app and wagyu tenderloin for main course. Paired with a nice Malbec. Been going there for many years and last several have not been fantastic, but seems to have regained its form. Place was packed and a considerable amount of local talent. Will go again next week.
  5. For everyday carry, no I do not carry an extra mag. I carry a 30S or G19 every day, so 10 or 15 rounds is plenty for the statistically unlikely event that I will be involved in a gunfight. If I am doing some sort of security related work, then an extra magazine is in the Tier 1 appendix holster, either 9mm or .45 When traveling, I do carry an extra mag in the car or my backpack. After throwing a couple of forgotten mags away at the airport, they tend to be in my car.
  6. This is a South African Police Service training video. Staged.
  7. Carried the Benchmade Mini-Presidio for 15 years with no complaints. Still opens lightning fast. All the black is worn off the blade from stabbing/slicing dummies(not human) in Krav classes for years. Switched the clip since I am left handed.
  8. My EDC is: Gen 5 Glock 19 carried in Tenicor Velo AIWB. Alternatively, a Tier 1 AXIS Slim or T-Rex Sidecar. Or Gen 3 Glock 30S carried in Garrett Industries AIWB. Or a Tier 1 AXIS Slim. or Sig p365 in Concealment Express tuckable AIWB.
  9. Pact. It's pretty easy to use.
  10. Kids are grown and out of the house, phasing out the work life and looking at moving to Austin. Are there any good ranges for defensive handgun shooting? I currently have my own range with IDPA style steel, 8" plates, 4" and 6" trees, 1/2 size IDPA, etc.... Do all of my training from concealed(AIWB) and with a timer. I have inquired at a couple and they were no drawing, no timer, no rapid fire, etc... For a hobby I do some personal protection, bodyguard type work and shoot/train 100 rounds per week because it's fun and I enjoy it. We will be living on the west side, outside 360. Any suggestions appreciated.
  11. I am traveling and just saw that I did not follow the rules. When I get back I will upload a photo. Saw a mention of Bailey Bradshaw in Diana. He has an interesting action that dangerous game hunters really like. He has a horrible reputation for slow work. Google is your friend.
  12. Speaking of single actions, I have a 1874 SAA with a 121XX serial number. Letter from Colt says made 1874, so made during the first full calendar year of production. .45 Long Colt, 5.5 inch barrel. It has stag grips that look right and have shrunk on the frame, but can't swear they came on the gun new.
  13. Its Complicated, The Intern,The Holiday, Something's Gotta Give, Home Again, Father of the Bride, etc.. Nancy Myers is a romantic movie making machine.
  14. I thought I heard on the podcast "How I Built This" that Herb started it?
  15. The GT4 is a bad boy. It really comes alive at the track. SW has/had one for sale in the past month that I drooled a little bit on.
  16. That Toyota is awesome. The professional hunters in Africa all love the Toyota. They all drive them. Mostly the four door pickup like the white one above. Then they install front/rear winches and various racks for hauling trackers/clients/game.
  17. Improvement to habitat is beneficial. We emphasis CRP grass, make sure there is adequate water and have built some artificial shelters in the CRP. We spread milo in the winter to help with their access to food. What we have found that works best is rain at the correct times. Rain at the right time so the native grasses grow tall and thick. Rain at the right time so there are plenty of grasshoppers for the chicks to eat. Rain at the right time so the grasses remain tall and thick. Not too much rain at any of those times to decimate the population. So, in reality, we have spent a ton of money trying to improve our quail habitat with very little to show for it. We buy 500-1000 birds per year, feed them all summer and fall, have them in a flight pen and have their water/food raised so they have to fly to eat/drink. There are fox, bobcat, coyotes that roam around the exteriors of the pens so the birds get a lot of flight time. The predators can't get in because we have 2 strands of 50 mile fence encircling the pen. That fence will kill every rattlesnake and any juvenile predator. It really pops. We put the birds out in the CRP when the wild quail are not worth hunting, which seems to be more often than not.
  18. Sorry, you will not have any of the pen raised birds survive. They will not be savvy to the ways of the wild and predators, mostly hawks and a few fox/bobcat/coyote will kill them all in very short order. We buy quail every year for our place and I have never seen one survive till spring. We are high fenced but the hawks leave little piles of feathers all over the CRP in just a couple of days.
  19. It is hard to imagine that Israel is similar to the size of: Dallas to Houston from north to south Waco to Tyler east to west. I have been all over Israel. It is pretty easy to travel around for a U.S. citizen. Just have to be wary of A, B or C zones. Don't act weird in public places, don't carry a Torah in the West Bank, don't carry a large bag to the Western Wall. Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Tiberius all have great restaurant and shopping districts. There is a really nice resort on the Dead Sea. Jericho has interesting historical artifacts. I enjoyed the old shipping ports along the Mediterranean as well as Megiddo.
  20. As stated, it is impossible to get to the $10MM level without some sort of equity boost via inheritance, company equity conversion, investment that paid off in spades, lottery, etc... I'm 57 and nearing the end of the work party. Been an entrepreneur my whole career and have started/sold 3 businesses as well as venture capital exposure in 4 software companies. There is a tremendous amount of luck having it all go correctly. I planned for the possibility of each venture failing and lived as frugal as possible. It helps having grown up in a small town with poor parents who never had anything. At my age now, it is time to go conservative. I don't have the time to start over. I have. very little stock market exposure(only dividend stocks),ladders of tax free municipal bonds and tranches of private equity exposure.
  21. Lazy, rainy Sunday afternoon. Watched The Upside at the theater, came home and cracked a bottle of wine with the wife and watched a few episodes of Bordertown. A Finnish mystery series. We liked it.
  22. I have been 11 times to Argentina and absolutely love it. My favorite combo: Fly from DFW or Houston to Santiago. Arrive in the morning and take bags to Hotel Aubrey. Have a driver take you on tours/lunch for the day. Dinner reservations at Como Agua Para Chocolate. Fly next morning to BA. Stay for a day. Shop on Florida Avenue, eat at a steakhouse that serves grilled cheese and a nice hotel(I like Four Seasons) Travel over to regional airport for trip to Bariloche. Stay at LLao LLao resort. Spend a day or two shopping, hiking, etc.. Then drive north thru the lakes to San Martin. Stay at Tipiliuke ranch for a few days of fly fishing, hiking, red stag and quail hunting, etc.... Airport in San Martin will get you back to BA. Have also flown into Delores/Merlo from BA and pigeon hunted and winery thing. Chartered a plane from there to Cafayate and spent a week visiting vineyards, desert, acoustical chamber, and stayed at some really nice resorts. Flew back to BA via Salta. Beautiful country.
  23. Saw The Green Book last night. Knew nothing about Dr. Shirley or his driver. It is a pretty good movie.
  24. the 992 Carrera S is 430 hp and 0-60 in 3.3 seconds. Base price $113,000. Laps the ring 5 seconds faster than 991. Technology/innovation is a wonderful thing. I want one.
  25. Its be interesting to see where those countries rank on immigration and racial relations. What is interesting is that all of these countries are so much smaller than the U.S. The largest on the list is 1/10 the size of the U.S in regards to population. Yes, if the U.S. were the size of Dallas/Fort Worth then there are a lot more things that can be done socially and economically. Figuring out health care for a small, income producing group is not that hard. What is impossible is having a national health care system for 350 million people that will not bankrupt the country. The U.S. has an impossible task with Social Security and Medicare. Universal coverage for this population does not work.
