  1. My MIL died of early onset Alzheimers when she was in her early 70's. Started exhibiting signs in her mid 60's and full memory care by late 60's. Also a family history on her side. My wife has the APOE -e4 gene and is in her late 50 's. We were starting to get some early warning signs during the flu bug of 2020-2021. Read Dale Bredesen's book End of Alzheimers as recommended by a MD friend. It makes a lot of sense and I pretty well have it memorized. We changed diets completely to limit insulin resistance, inflammatory chemicals, etc... Simply put, we eat a lot of natural fats, brightly colored vegetables, fish, pasture raised eggs, no processed flour or sugar and 85% chocolate and/or red wine as a treat. It makes a real difference and has really helped with mood swings, overall cognitive ability, and outlook. We have friends that are on the same journey and they have also experienced a "roll back of the clock". We are all aware that the end game is fixed, but quality of life is without a doubt better.
  2. Andre Agassi was right when he said "pickleball is where old tennis players go to die". I played in a senior pickleball tournament this week and it was full of old high school and college tennis players that are over 60 that can really play. I played with a senior lady that played pro tennis in the 90s. Lots of fun and very competitive.
  3. I have a 44 and it is horrible. Figured out how to do the mags. Once the magazine has 10 rounds in it, fully depress the button on the side. The rounds will drop a little and realign. Release and should be good to go. You have to use high velocity rounds. Standard velocity does not work in mine. As far as accuracy, it sucks. I average 6-8" groups at 10 yards. Looks like a shotgun pattern. This is a common theme with this model and I understand that you can send it back to Glock. They will replace the barrel and maybe do some other work. They will send a test target back showing its new performance.
  4. I had a bike from S&H Green Stamps that had long handlebars, a banana seat and chrome hoop at the rear. The farm kids in the area built ramps, hauled in sand for landing areas and really worked at who could jump the farthest. Finally broke the frame of the S&H jumper and that was about the time I heard of a girl that lived 2 miles down the road. It was time for a Western Auto road bike.
  5. Albert's Hot Sauce for the win. From Kilgore, TX. My parents served it almost every meal growing up.
  6. The A5 is legit. Cooked it a few times. It is so rich, 1 steak will feed 2 couples with leftovers. Pro tip: Sear very quickly. Using typical cooking times for rare, medium rare, medium is too long for A5. On the Blackstone, I do 2 minutes each side and it has a nice crust and a perfect rare/medium rare.
  7. My annus miracle started about the time my wife hit menopause. Both kids were out of the house and we were traveling/having lots of fun. I had a good run of about 8 years. Then, like a noannus miracle, it stopped.
  8. First job was working for HL Hunt shooting crows in his pecan orchards. $1/crow. Summer after 2nd grade. Got dropped off at 7:30 with a sack lunch, a pocketful of shells and a single shot .410. Picked up at 3 pm for an accounting with the ranch foreman. At 14, drove family truck and dad built gooseneck trailer to Laredo to drop off missionary supplies. The original driver got sick and I said I could do it. How hard can it be to read a map and drive in a straight line all the way down 35? I had been driving our gooseneck all over the farm the previous 2 years. I had zero issues on the trip. Our house did not have any insulation because my parents saved a few bucks and bled off natural gas from a well that was pretty close to the house. Still darn cold in the mornings. My folks would light the fire about 5 a.m., wake us up about 5:40 and it sure feels great to put on your Tough Skins jeans. The polyester/nylon reinforced denim felt amazing after being warmed by the fire. Alternatively, in the summer, always loved laying on fresh washed sheets that had been on the clothes line all day and laying next to an open window while the attic fan sucks in all the fresh air. With warm clothes on, gather eggs, feed the pigs and then walk down to the road to catch the 6:30 bus. Home about 4 p.m., saddle the horses and move cows to different pastures or move hay around on the tractor. At dark, neighbors would show up at our house for a little headin & heeling at our lighted ropin pen. Had a party line and my parents would not allow a long distance call to the town where I went to school. So, had to work with what I had and cruise the nearest DQ and Sonic for potential conquests. For us, a very normal Texas life. Don't miss it.

    Getting old sucks

Had rotator cuff surgery 3 years ago. 3CM supraspinatus tear, infraspinatus tear, bicep tendon tear, SLAP tear, bone spur removal, etc... Have already torn the supra and infra. Dr. says no to surgery. He thinks they will just re-tear. Doing physical therapy to build up muscles around the cuff and just make it for a while.
  10. We went thru this. My wife had a mole on the back of her neck that looked kinda funky. Had a biopsy done and it came back melanoma. I think it was Stage 2. Went in and took a much longer and wider piece than I thought possible and the lymph nodes on either side of it. Margins and lymph nodes came back clear. No other issues in last 10 years other than wide brim hats, sun screen and long sleeve shirts when out in the sun.
  11. 39 years ago I got my first job in the big city of Houston. $6/hr + overtime + an office + wear dress clothes. I treated myself to a Cartier Santos to celebrate the milestone. I still wear it every day.
  12. It is ridiculous the amount of information you will get. I joined the Colt Forum, sent pics and got instant responses. Built in 1873, lot 6 to the US gov. Inspected by all the right people. Barrel cut and repurposed for the Spanish American War. Mismatch of other 4 digit parts which was common for the day. Inspected again by all the right SAW personnel.
  13. I recommend going to the Colt Forum. There are a lot of experts on that site that will give you a good idea. Inspection stamps are a big deal. I have a 4 digit, built in 1873 SAA that they provided a tremendous amount of information for.
  14. I like Poke House in Westlake, next to Twin Liquor and Walgreens. Very good bowls and reasonable price. Quick in and out for lunch.
  15. 1911 fan here. Been shooting/carrying a long time.
  16. Have to admit that I had to use the Google to decipher this question. Based on the age, I would say no. Based on the accuracy of time keeping, I would say no. It keeps good enough time, but not anything great. It will get get off a minute or so every week. It runs slightly fast, but not worth the time/cost. I like it just the way it is. Been wearing it a long time.
  17. I live in the much more civilized NF in Colorado. My experiences with black bears and mountain lions is the same our Alaskan resident. By the time I see/hear them they are running across the next valley. We have a lot of both, and they just do not have any interest in human contact. I have seen lots of cubs, but never been between one and the mother. Mountain lions kill fawns in our yard in the summer, but don't mess with the dog. Moose is by far our most dangerous neighbor. They are unpredictable, can be ornery and are so big, a casual assault can be deadly. I carry every day on hikes. Almost always a .45 with Lehigh Defense ammo.
  18. Daily wear for 39 years this month.
  19. If only ONE caliber, then the 30-06 for me. As a handloader, it works great. I loaded the 110 grain Barnes TTSX at 3500 fps for years. Shot a couple hundred deer with that load. 180 grain Sierra Pro Hunter at 2850 fps works wonders for stag, elk, Wildes, zebra, black bear. 180 grain Swift a-frame at 2800 fps works great on giraffe, eland, oryx and the occasional braining of a buffalo. 240 grain Woodleigh soft point at 2400 fps, just because.
  20. Our experience with Ridge Grapplers has not been as good. I am a dedicated KO2 guy but have Ridge Grapplers on wife's SUV. They hydroplane a little in big rains and she is not as confident in them. Will be switching soon.
  21. Used to race in the Big Bend Open Road Challenge in the 90's. DPS shuts down 285 from Fort Stockton to Sanderson. Start in Fort Stockton, drive in your specified class, get official time for first leg in Sanderson. Drive back for finish. No electronic/computer assisted odometer. I had a navigator with a stop watch, book with road markers, HP calculator. Pretty desolate area. The cactus is fierce out there. A couple guys brought a new Viper GTS, got too much lift under the body and spun off the road. When trailered back to town, it was wrapped in old barb wire fence and inside/outside covered in cactus spines.
  22. Congrats. You are doing well and appear to be having similar(great) results as my friend. He is 3 weeks out today and down 30 lbs. Already on the 4 week diet and adjusting to a new lifestyle. New clothes are just around the corner!
  23. Good for you. I have a friend that is 2 weeks post op. Private pay in Austin for around $15,000 all in. Very easy recovery. Has already progressed to soft foods and feeling good.
  24. Headed to our home in Pagosa Saturday. We have 3' of new snow at the house and the mountain has 4' of new snow. Should be great skiing. We are going to stay the month of March and get a few runs in.

    Getting old sucks

We had a party line for a long time. I was a transfer student and the school district was on a different exchange. My parents would not let me call any girls at my school because of the cost. So, I had to cruise the Dairy Queen/sonic in another small town that was closer to the farm and on the same exchange.
