  1. The shutdown has led me to go down a rabbit hole to try and improve my EDC by measuring time and score on IDPA and CSTAT standard drills. My EDCs are Gen 5 Glock 19s w/RMR and a pair of Glock 30S. Many thousands of rounds thru each and numerous defensive classes and training hours. Since there was very little I could do other than play golf and go to the range, I thought I would try other handguns in search of the holy grail of defensive pistols. Started off 1911. Custom steel Commander. Grip safety issues and pinned it. Shot ragged holes slow fire. At speed, not even close. DW ECO. Very accurate but would miss the grip safety at fast draw from concealed. Pinned the safety but had a couple of hammer bites from poor grip. Par time for me at 5 yards from concealed is around 1 second. 4 shots in two targets in less than 2. Could not match. Very impressed with this gun. Easy to conceal. Next, EDC X9. Nice little pistol. Center of gravity was a little high and hammer bite got me trying to go fast. Next Sig 365. Extremely accurate and easily concealable. The grip angle is off for me and it naturally pointed low. At speed, shots were all over the place. Then on to 365 with RMRSc dot. Super accurate at slow pace. Could not find the dot at speed. Sig VTAC. The Kyle Lamb version. This gun is perfect in every way. Extremely accurate, fantastic sights, soft shooting. Too big to comfortably carry every day and I never cared for the Sig trigger safety system. If I was shooting competitively, this is the gun I would use. Sig 320 Compact .45 acp. Bore axis was too high and never felt right. Moving on. EDC X9 again, this time with suppressor height sights and RMR. Great point of aim, extremely accurate but about 1/2 second slower at every drill. Sold all of these and now content with what I have. I burned a few thousand rounds, lost a few thousand dollars in the resale market, have lots of holsters and burned into my memory to pick a system and stick with it. I did have fun and managed to take up some time during this crazy year.
  2. One of my neighbors got it. Pretty mild symptoms overall but got pneumonia. Took himself to ER/hospital. He got checked out, prescribed medications and sent home to get better. He is almost back to normal after about a week.
  3. It is the culture there. They are very social, have multi-generational housing, attend Mass regularly, and love neighborhood cookouts. By and large, the older population is very unhealthy. All of my employees there have tested positive some time this year. None had anything over a couple days of feeling not so good and all worked from home until they tested negative.
  4. I have the 20 Platinum w/ Eco Boost, 10 speed, 35 gallon tank. I get around 12 mpg in town and 16 on the highway. Made 2 trips to Colorado this year already and a steady 16 mpg. If I drove slower, maybe the mileage would be better. Running 80-85 most of the way and RPM is right around 2100. If I ran around 65, I think the mpg would be closer to 18. My buddy has same ride with V8 and gets a little over 20 on trips to his place in NM. The Eco has much better power in the mountains.

    Getting old sucks

Not a doc, but stayed places and such. Based on my experiences, it could be diverticulitis. Could be gallbladder issues. Hopefully easy enough to diagnose and stabilize.
  6. On Thursday I counted 30+ dps vehicles between Austin and Abilene. All headed towards Austin. I thought there may be a convention. Over 1000 troopers being brought in for the weekend protest + dhs, dea and border patrol.
  7. Just got back from Nashville. Statewide mask rule in public spaces with emphasis on bar districts. Broadway was packed after dark with little or no mask wearing. The Gulch and M Street were crowded with young professionals burning cash at bars/restaurants. Very little mask wearing. Rural Arkansas apparently does not have internet service for keeping up with the news. Not many people wearing at the gas stations or fast food. Ate dinner in East Texas on the return trip. All tables full on a Tuesday night. Servers wore masks but did not see anyone come in with one. Maybe limited internet service there also.
  8. 2020 3.5 Ecoboost here. Averages 15 mpg per 35 gallon tank. On a road trip, avg. gets up to 16.5. I have the 10 speed.
  9. This is the correct answer. Ambien every night since surgery.
  10. 2 weeks ago today I had rotator cuff repair to all four tendons, two of which were complete tears that had retracted across humerus head. First 2.5 days were absolutely miserable. Had the nerve block, lidocaine catheter and oxy. I have had a lot of orthopedic surgeries due to a false sense of ability and never stopping when I should have. Nothing compares to the pain of this surgery. Good news is that after icing with the machine for 60 straight hours, I pulled out the catheter and stopped taking oxy. By the evening of 3rd day, I felt pretty good. I took my arm out of the sling every couple hours and straightened elbow/did hand exercises. I slept in a recliner for 5 nights. By the end of the first week, I was in the sling 50% of the time. This week I stopped sleeping with the sling at night and don't wear it during the day. Only wear the sling when driving and hiking. I am trying to walk at least 5 miles per day. I can 100% complete all of the range of motion exercises allowed. I don't start pt until 3 more weeks. After a very rough start, I am very happy with the progress.
  11. Wrapped up a pretty spectacular couple of weeks of dining out with Barley Swine. 12 course chef's tasting menu. Very good. Some of the starters were not as good as Hestia, but the wagyu ribeye was spectacular. So, my rank: 1.Hestia 2.Tie for Barley Swine/Comedor. Little better food at Barley but better wine selection at Comedor.
  12. Comedor was the destination last night. Great atmosphere, courtyard and plexiglass separations at the bar. The bone marrow tacos are amazing. Very good margaritas and a decent wine list. A good date night spot.

How do you like reverse replacement? my two surgeon consults said I was too young at 58. even though one of my tendons was not fixable they said I will be ok with 3 and have options in the future.

    Getting old sucks

rotator cuff surgery last Wednesday. Nerve block, nerve catheter and oxy. Had ice machine on 60 straight hours. Pretty miserable thru Friday. Took out catheter Saturday am and stopped oxy. iced all day Saturday alternating with taking off sling and straightening arm and hand exercises. felt great Saturday pm. Sunday walked for an hour and alternated sling on/off all day doing hand/elbow exercises. did ice machine after walk. did not sleep with sling last night and have not worn today. no real pain but have not used shoulder. had all four torn tendons and bone spurs and loose debris. first two days sucked but really happy with progress.
  15. Hestia is amazing. Had chef's 12 course menu Saturday night. Highly recommend.
  16. Had mine done in 1997 when I was 35. 23 years later and still test at 20/15 in both eyes. Have to wear readers but overall very happy. I think the technology then was PRK? The cost then was $1500 per eye. Steven Dell did mine.
  17. Went to Domain yesterday evening for MD with wife/daughters(no pics). At least 80% of people walking around did not wear a mask. The restaurant we went to was over 50% full, no masks for guests. All wait staff had on masks but weren't happy about it. On the way, Bull Creek and Pennybacker were packed with young adults, not a mask to be seen anywhere.
  18. I "hear" from last week's faculty meeting that football is off for the fall. Season ticket holders will be refunded. Classes will resume in the fall. Sizes larger than 100 students will be online. Smaller classes will meet in lecture halls and spread out. Regular class times will extend to at least 8 p.m. Profs are expected to teach more classes to smaller sizes. I have no other information or insight.
  19. I have this on my T-rex sidecar rig for G19. The end of the barrel sticks out slightly from the holster. When running a lot of rounds, adding the heel pad keeps me from getting burns. Glad to have had it. Recently completed a 3 day defensive pistol course and the gun got very hot.
  20. We have 4 in our gym. Have tried it a dozen times and it is mediocre at best. The classes are not live, and seem to be very repetitive. I just got bored with it very quickly. There are some setups and virtual reality bike tours that I like much better. Wife and daughter(No pics of either) only used it a few times and quit. It is free and they still do not use it.
  21. I really like the Benchmade auto openers. I have carried a Mini Presidio for over 15 years. The black is worn off the blade from Krav knife drills. I really like it. Due to being stuck at home for the past few weeks and online buying habit, I ordered the Phaeton OTF. It is not as ergonomic as the Presidio. When drawing from pants, the button is not where your thumb is. It requires some fumbling around to get it just right. Also, the blade is very thin and may be good for sliding between ribs, but for general household cutting, prying it does not make the grade.
  22. I have got to get back to work. This stay at home is making me crazy. I have bought over 5000 rounds of 9mm, 1000 of .45, a Clark custom .45, various spring kits for Glocks, recoil spring assemblies, etc... Seems like everyday I get something from Brownells, MidwayUSA, AmmoToGo, etc... Today, I installed a Zev Pro flat face trigger on a Gen 5 Glock 19. Love it. Very little Glock sludge in take-up and crisp 3.5 lb wall. Been shooting a couple hundred rounds per week.
  23. The market overall is still frozen. Using Austin as an example, many sellers have pulled their homes off the market due to the pandemic and not wanting DOM to accumulate during a dead period. Selling agents are very keen and incentivized to have low DOM. This artificially depresses the supply market. The shutting down of the economy has resulted in mass layoffs, combined with an unprecedented upheaval in the oil business, has eliminated the buying pool. The mortgage servicing industry is having record payment lapses which tightens up the lending part of the equation. In the $1MM+ market, which for Austin is a large sector, there are a total of 10 homes under contract in the past 30 days. One is a new build that had a deal working for a long time and one is a foreclosure. There are 316 homes currently listed for sale in Austin over $1MM. What does this information tell us? Nothing, the sample size is too small and the numerator/denominator have unknown variables at the present time. I am going to go with frozen. No-one knows what to do, what next month will look like and what the unintended consequences of this shutdown have caused. I think it is dramatic and there will be a gap down in residential prices. Especially above $1MM. The $3-500 market may be less impacted? A lot of those people are laid off but not in the marketplace yet. We will know more in 60-90 days.
  24. I watch MidwayUSA, luckygunner, SGAmmo and AmmoToGo daily to see what is in stock. Last week, supplies were very limited with very few options for 9mm or .45 acp. Yesterday, all had plenty of stock with prices from .21 to .35 per round. Higher than before, but less than 2 weeks ago. There is still plenty of demand out there. I got a notification yesterday from MidwayUSA that they had S&B 124 grain 9mm ammo in 1000 round cases. By the time I dicked around the yard, went to get drive thru lunch and back home, they were sold out.
  25. I have been wearing a Cartier Santos for 36 years. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It was cleaned once 13 years ago. I shower with it and clean it with soap just about every day. It loses about 30 seconds a day. Once a week, I adjust it to my iPhone. It has been a great watch.
