Left Behind: A Quick Dose Of Post Big 12 Reality
CustersDoctor replied to LTtxfan's topic in Football
I watched at least one pod-cast from each of the 4-corners schools from the BIG12 media days. And though none of them are glad the PAC collapsed, in every single pod-cast EVERY reporter commented on what a good fit it was. How comfortable they were. Imagine you've gone to the last dozen PAC12 media days. Half the schools there are insufferable snobs. You have the elitist liberal intellectual snobs of CAL/FORD. Add to that the fact Stanford has dominated the Directors Cup and they make sure you know it. You have the Hollywood Social Status elitism of USC & UCLA. And the Pacific North West Libs of Oregon & Washington. Now your at the BIG12 media days and every member school is somewhat like your own. Not a lot of snobbery going there. Maybe Dion's getting a little to much attention. Maybe UU has there nose a little to high in the air. But none of condescension that overflowed from USC/UCLA/CAL/STANFORD etc. The 4-corners schools felt really good about the parity and the friendliness and the camaraderie. -
The GOR's don't last forever, they run in concordance with the current TV deal. So none of the PAC12 schools violated the GOR because it was due to expire. USC & UCLA's official exit coincides with the end of the PAC12 contract. OUT didn't violate the GOR either, the GOR was due to sunset on June 30th 2025. OUT agreed to pay an exit fee to leave early. GOR's do indeed have a lot of clout and so far nobody has gotten out of one, they all waited for them to sunset or they negotiated an exit fee.

If I had a 'LOCKED ON SURLY' podcast here's my my new fanboy clickbait proposal. The Big12 & the ACC have the votes to dissolve both conferences. Then they can merge into one big conference while cutting the schools that are dilutive. The Big12 will get 2/3 vote to dissolve from these 11 schools. TECH, OSU, ISU, WVU, AST, UA, UU, BYU, CU, Kansas & TCU. The ACC will get 2/3 vote from these 12 schools. UM, FSU, CLEM, UNC, UV, VT, UL, PITT, NCST, CUSE, CAL & Stanford. That's 23 schools. Getting to 24 would seem more complete. So pick one of the left behind to get to 24. KST, BU, UH, CINCY, UCF, BC, GT, DUKE, WAKE, SMU. The hardest for me leave out were 1. KST, They're competitive in everything. But they don't deliver great ratings in anything. And the state of Kansas has a small footprint. 2. UCF, they have had a growth plan for over a decade and have done a darn good job of climbing their way up. 3. Duke, they deliver big time on the #2 sport. This new 24 team conference gets a really good deal because they'll rid themselves of ratings disasters. There won't be any schools in that upper tier like what the B1G has, but the B1G has these super low performers: Northwestern, Maryland & Rutgers. And these not so great performers: Purdue, Indiana and Illinois.

Dos Equis Conference FTW. And though I hate Cal and Stanford, they have far better TV metrics than UH, CINCY or GT. Drop those three in favor of Cal, Stanford and Cuse. I'd keep Louisville & Miami both over Duke. The left behind will be: GT, UH, CINCY, DUKE, WAKE, BC & KST. SMU Don't get no mention here, they absolutely don't belong.

I remember when that contract was announced, nobody cared about the far off terminus. It was the biggest contract EVER. The other four conferences were agast. Wondering how they could compete with that ACC money. Then by the fall of 2022 FSU & CLEMSON are like, "WTF UCF is making more than us."

After the Wes Welker game an Aggie posted a long well written narrative about his entire day. His description of the pregame hype, the atmosphere, the crowd, the heat, the joy of Aggie having a big lead, the fear of a Tech comeback, the punt return, missing an OT extra point, Tech making their extra point, the abject depression and silence, the third degree sunburn with no thrill of victory to show for it. I'd love to read it again.

I look as these rankings obsessively. UT is usually in the Top 5. But what continually surprises me is just how far down UNC & UV always are. They are always 40th or worse. Some people act like the B1G is drooling to pick them up if the ACC collapses. I call BS, UV is actually less valuable than Maryland and Rutgers.

Glad to see Tech renewing their rivalry with ACU. They have not played since 1949. -

If only UT had the money to buy anything they wanted. -
The fact that CAL & Stanford get ZERO mentions on this page is hilarious. Forgetting them isn't on us. It's on CalFord. They weren't even a serious contender for the BIG12 and for some reason the ACC thought they'd turn the attic into a room for them. And they are letting SMU sleep in the yard. It just illustrates at how, not only did CalFordSmu not add value, but they damaged the brand.

Soooo. Mark Adams was pushed out the door after the 2023 season at Texas Tech. There were accusations that he used racially insensitive metaphors around his players. Lets just say he was kinda racist. (Even by Tech standards) Well, Chris Beard just hired Mark Adams to be his sidekick at Ole Miss. Fired from Tech for being racist, Ole Miss rolls out the red carpet.

When one uses the word, 'influential' it would mean that for years to come, everybody copies you. And to this day almost every teams quarterback is expected to be able to execute the zone read. Did MB and VY invent the zone read? NO. But everybody runs at least some form of it, solely because of how UT won a National Championship with the zone read as a key piece. So I think the 2005 UT team belongs. I also think Leach being at #5 for the 2008 season is dead on. Influential, heck yes. To this day you'll see plays that he popularized being run by every NFL team and every college team.

Pretty sure the SEC is watching. Waiting for the Allstate Conference to set the bar, knowing full well that the SEC asking price will be at least triple what they get. I'm betting on Coca-Cola stepping up to buy the SEC rights. -

If I were ranking how well the Big12 travels I'd definitely put OSt in the top three. 1. BYU 2. TECH 3. OkieLite 4. Tie BU & TCU & All the Old BIG8 schools. (ISU, KST, KU & CU) 10. UA, AST & UU 13. WVU, They have a great fanbase, but having to go of state just to get to the airport hurts their travel. Having a rival 6 hours away is really going to help. 14. UH 15. UCF 16. CINCY -

The local gumment knows all to well about the pending financial loss. You just can't come out and say publicly what lame replacements Cincy, UCF & UH are. -

Though it is quiet a haul from Norman and Austin to Georgia, SC or Florida, the SEC will certainly have the fewest miles of any conference. They are the only remaining regional conference. I found this info about Cal & Stanford: Cal's travel for Football=10,334, Stanfords=8,954. That's insane. -

You're not right about Lubbock. Tech has more fans there. (I live in Lubbock). Nonetheless, UT always brought an army with them. They always bought their ticket allotment. And they bought up as many "single" game tickets as they could. (There were never very many to be had) They'd pay a premium for whatever seats were on the resale sights. On top of that (and this is NO exaggeration) UT always brought at least 10,000 fans who knew they weren't going to get into the game. The parking lots around the stadium were filled with burnt orange fans watching the game on big screens in pick up beds or next to million dollar RV's etc. The bars were packed in every part of the city, the restaurants were packed and the hotels were charging triple rate with a two night minimum. I would dare say that the financial impact in Lubbock of the UT game every other year was $50,000,000. The A&M game in Lubbock was nearly as good and the OU game wasn't far behind. BYU will indeed have a lot of fans at all away games. Tech probably will be the second best traveling fan base. Colorado is looking forward to having visiting fans again. The west of the rockies schools didn't travel to Boulder. KST, KU, OSU & Tech always sold out their allotment in Boulder. (As did Nebraska, OU & UT). All is not lost here in Lubbock, we have replaced the UT home game with the mighty Bearcats of Cincinnati and replaced the Oklahoma Sooners with the Arizona State Sundevils. So the economic impact loss prolly won't be more than $80-$90 million. -
