Like the national forests? Go while they're still there.
OregonHorn replied to Captainant's topic in Daily Texan
The issue isn't as simple as the new directive wants to make it seem. For context, I live on the border of commercial tree farms in the coast mountains (almost all Weyerhauser after they bought Willamette Industries in a hostile takeover) and national forest. I've been here since the late 90s, so I've witnessed the changes. I've had many friends who started working in the woods the week after high school graduation. The local logging industry is not like it used to be for a few basic economic reasons. First, the infrastructure is gone. There used to be mills all over the place. Fed conservation efforts like spotted owl protection led almost all local mills to shut down. I could have reached a mill in either direction from my house in five minutes. Now the nearest is an hour away in the Willamette Valley. The first big consequence of that change is that transport costs have increased dramatically. There are more efficient ways to transport finished product long distances than logs. Coupled with much higher diesel prices, it simply costs a lot more to log here now. Throw in a new housing bubble burst 15 years ago, and it's even worse. Much like re-shoring industrial manufacturing, the stated goal of the new tariffs, the solution would not be achieved in the short term, and big business is loathe to invest without long term guarantees, which aren't available when regulations are subject to change at the whim of the executive branch. No new mill would be open here before the the next president takes over. Second, the population is less than half what it was in the early 90s. There used to be post offices and small stores within easy reach. Now there's only one option to grab a beer within a half hour, and the postal service tried to shut down our weekday only, 4 hour per day post office. Round trip to the grocery store is three hours. The workforce left when the employers did. Those who remain are mostly unemployable tweekers. It's a long commute for a very physically demanding job. Good workers have better options than trekking out here, and they'd have very few housing options locally compared to 30 years ago. TL;DR there's no magic wand solution to start utilizing the national forest land nestled right here in the most productive timberlands in the country. It's gotta be even worse elsewhere. -

"but it *cuts* both ways" would be more appropriate given their history with mental WRs. -
I just read an article written an hour ago by an msn analyst who has aggy vs baylor in the Gator Bowl. He also has us beating GA in the CCG, then again at DKR in the CFP. I didn't know the guy, so I read his bio. He left school at 18 to become a milkman.

Alchemy has to fit in there somewhere as well. Their only mistake was that they figured out how to make pot metal out of gold instead of the other way around. Bad metal judging. -

There are a couple of effective plant-derived pesticides that kill spider mites on contact but won't penetrate the plant or fruit: azadirachtin derived from neem seed oil and pyrethrins originally derived from pyrethrum daisies. You can apply them frequently, and they're tank-compatible. You have to hit the actual bugs, so make sure to get full coverage on the undersides of leaves. Start before you see any leaf perforations or webs for best effect. There are some very effective products only labeled for ornamentals that you can use on neighboring trap plants all growing season. I'll use a product called Avid on hibiscus plants that I mix in with anything subject to mites. They go straight for the hibiscus first, dine & die. Avid will persist in the plant for about 30-40 days, but it has to be applied to any new growth. Its action in plants is called locally systemic. It penetrates the leaf surface, travels a short distance through intracellular spaces, then parks for the rest of its time. Keep trap plants in. pots that can be moved away from edibles before reapplications. If you ever have issues with aphids, nasturtiums are very good trap plants. -
My bad - I didn't provide context. I was born and raised in Houston. The day in the blast furnace here in Oregon that I was posting about was 4f hotter than the all time record high in Houston. It was 20f+ warmer here that particular day plus rain forest humidity. It was the only summer day in 25 years that I would have traded for Houston weather.

Ethanol saturated tissues would be good fuel, but you'd want to measure that against the likely exposure to radioactive waste.

True, I'd be wishing myself straight into the middle of hurricane season. I haven't been through one of those since Alicia.

Squirrels hate safflower meal. I top dress with it, and it keeps them out of the garden. I also mix it with chicken feed. It's cheap and makes a decent high N fert. -
While movie credits were rolling, my wife asked me if lead paint was still legal. When I told her no, she asked me why every movie has a lead painter.
