Agreed, Canada benefits tremendously as well.
-
(I should add that the more mls and ussf can do to increase mls club funding to academies the better. The bigger the pond we create, the bigger fish we’ll find.)
-
The MLS is a relevant league for mid-tier European clubs (and rarely big clubs) poaching cheaper young talent and for Central American clubs to build talent pools their domestic leagues can’t afford. IMO, the MLS will never, and should never aspire, to compete with any of the big 4/5 European leagues.
-
If this is your opinion, it is entirely wrong. If you are just stating some public announcement of MLS’ strategic priorities, than fine. A major issue holding back the USMNT is the commingling of MLS’s and US Soccer’s priorities. The USMNT is not helped by keeping talent in mls or paying oversized salaries to talent that should be challenged in better leagues. Barring teenagers who are being showcased before they can move to europe, it’s a great fall back and oversized paydays for has-beens or never-hads from a USMNT perspective. It should be no surprise that 9 players on the roster (and 5 starters today) have never had any affiliation with MLS. Everyone else barring Ream, Zimmerman and Turner left the moment they turned 18 (Adams, Aaronson, McKinney, Wright, Scally, even Shaq Moore).
-
Greg is what he is and should be thanked and not renewed. We need a far better tactical approach than he can provide. The only usmnt players that should come back to mls are those who can’t hack it for their Euro club and want a payday. Any who do should then be removed from serious consideration in the player pool. Ream will have retired and Haji Wright will be 30, but everyone else on the roster who matters will be in their prime in 25/26. Our standard should be a top 4 euro league starting xi player.
-
Greg is what he is - a mid tier mls coach. He got totally depantsed in tactics and team selection today. 1-11, the Dutch are better than we are, and Van Gaal closed the door on any real opportunity for the win. Happy to provide us with possession and dare us to be technical and tactical enough to break them down and finish. We have maybe 7-8 players capable of that level of play, and two started on the bench. Really love seen Jordan Morris coming in as our offensive punch in the 80th minute! Bull in a china shop, right? We met expectations in this tournament, but did not exceed them. He should be lauded for transitioning the playing pool from the aged 2014-ers to a lot of young talent and winning some national team recruiting battles for Musuh and Pepi. Musuh is definitely a huge piece going forward. Greg should get a hearty “thanks” and we should look for a stronger manager going into the 2026 cycle.

Two points lost. Bad foul by Zimmerman, obviously, but the goal was deserved after a dominating last 30 min from Wales. Would have like to see Musah, Dest and Mckennie subbed off earlier, especially given we needed to adjust to the higher press. Confused on Gio, who says he’s 100% fit.

I haven’t seen anything regarding CTE and Akers, but she definitely had concussions, multiple knee reconstructions and played much of the ‘99 World Cup knockout rounds with a dislocated shoulder. She’s probably the best soccer player, relative to her peers, the US has ever produced. Unfortunately, she played in an era where she made zero dollars and had to retire due to injuries after the ‘99 World Cup. A few years ago she auctioned off all of her medals, awards and memorabilia off to raise money to continue a horse rescue farm she runs.

Can we get an NIL program going for a competent HC?
-
Let’s not forget USC. 4-8 to currently 8-1.
-
My favorite play was the 4th down on our first offensive series where TCU had 9 in the box. Great stuff.

Thompson sucks. Card sucks. Ewers sucks. There’s a through line. Ewers is throwing the ball where he’s told to throw the ball. Does anyone think the deep balls to Worthy are the 2nd or 3rd reads on those plays? Could he execute those throws better? Yes, absolutely. Could Worthy run through the route and fight for the ball or try to draw a PI? Yes, absolutely. It’s like saying Bijan forgot how to run, when we’re running zone into 9 man boxes. Why can’t he find a cutback! This is a poorly coached and poorly disciplined squad, executing to varying degrees week to week. We’re screaming at symptoms not addressing causes.
-
Combined with last months results, they need to seriously look at a coaching change. We don’t seem to have any tactical plan in attack other than “Let’s hope Sophia Smith or Mal Pugh do something individually amazing.” Horan is constantly pushed forward, and Lavelle is a natural 10. We don’t have a strong enough 6 to control the middle by herself. We really miss Julie Ertz, but she’s not coming back anytime soon (or at all). We haven’t seemingly developed any consistency or chemistry on the back line. Combine all that with the explosion in popularity of women’s soccer in Europe combined with existing clubs and academies and the gap has disappeared between the USWNT and at least 5 Euro federations.

I think just chugging horchata would be more culturally sensitive.
-
You're right. Let's get a random mexican american and have him sit on the bench. Maybe even tell him to grow out a mustache and wear a sombrero so the kids know what's up.
-
Unless the china shop is the bench, Morris ain't much of a bull. Silly me, I thought the goal of a USMNT manager was to win games and advance in the tournament, not send messages of inclusion to Mexican-American kids.

Two indefensible call ups and absolutely fireable squad management imo. The call ups are Long and Morris. Morris serves no role in this squad and plays our deepest position. Our top 4 attackers are all wingers (in order): Pulisic, Reyna, Aaronson and Weah. Just calling Aaronson a midfielder on the roster doesn't make it so. Morris is a far, far inferior option to those four in our deepest position. Even planning for Reyna to miss time with an injury or limiting his minutes, we've got options here. Hell, I'd rather have Sargent out as a wide F over Morris. Just zero value add, but he'll be brought on as a sub most of our games. Long is well below this level, especially post achilles injury. Just does not have the foot speed to keep pace. Pairing him with already slower CBs in Zim and Ream is brutal. Especially when they have not been playing together routinely for the cycle. The bigger point is squad management. Calling in CCV and Ream when neither has been with the team in years and creating no chemistry in our CB pairing all cycle. Running off John Brooks for seemingly personal reasons. More broadly, Greg thinks he's smarter than everyone else and can will things to be instead of tweaking the system that plays to the strengths of the squad in attack. These should all be fireable offenses, and ones that we all saw coming over this cycle. Maybe the issue lies at the Federation level and there's pressure to bring in MLS guys, who knows. I tend to think it's Greg's arrogance more than anything. We're going to get JF as the starter at 9 with Zim and Long as the CB pairing against Wales. It will not go well.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power - Amazon Prime
eljinca replied to Michael Knight's topic in Movies and TV
I admit that it is very hard for me to divorce my love for the Tolkein lore (have read LOTR. + Silmarillion + other work like Unfinished Tales at least 10 times), but even taking this show on its own merits, it is some of the laziest writing I've ever seen wrapped in decent CGI landscapes. I'll put the actual shitting on what Tolkien wrote in spoilers for those who don't care, but let's just go through this show on its own merits. 1) So Galadriel, the badass Commander of the North, important royal elf in Middle Earth, is unaware that there hasn't been a king in the South for 1,000 years? She needs a scroll from the catacombs (bonus points if you wonder why immortal beings like elves have catacombs) to figure that out? What about the elves, like Arondir, who are explicitly keeping watch over the Southlands for the past thousand years? Have they forgotten to mention the lack of a king in their dispatches? 2) The Southlands appears to be a single village of less than 100 people, who are also unaware that they haven't had a king in 1,000 years. The Numenoreans show up with some dude with a sigil (never explained) and Galadriel says "here's your king" and they all accept this? Zero conversation, just "Hail King"? It's beyond ridiculous. 3) So Galadriel figures out Halbrand is Sauron, the big baddy she has been chasing with a singular purpose for thousands of years, and her reaction is 1) I can't tell anyone, but trust me and 2) yes, keep making the rings Sauron wants us to make, but make three because of "balance". It's ham-fisted hackery of the finest vintage. 4) Let's talk Halbrand/Sauron. So he's on a raft in the middle of the ocean. What's the plan? Who are the other people with him? He's come up with a heck of a long-term plan to get shipwrecked out there so that he can run into not only an elf, but one of the most powerful elves who can then convince Numenor to invade the Southlands and install him as king, against his apparent wishes, then take him to the elven capital where they are trying to craft some powerful objects. Also, if he's Sauron, how does a stab wound we don't see bring him to death's door, since he's immortal? Doesn't matter though, that elven medicine fixes him right up in the next scene, so move along and don't think about it (or anything). 5) Moving to the Harfoot story line, can anyone me walk through a purpose of having it in the show besides memberries of Gandalf and Hobbits? It related in no way to anything else in the show and nothing happens unless you thought that wizard was Sauron (which would actually have been interesting; that the precursor to Hobbits somehow created/enabled Sauron). 6) When we are actually shown some Harfoot culture (don't step off the trail, don't fall behind the wagon train, clearly the leave stragglers to get the rest of the group to safety) it is different and somewhat interesting. Those concepts are then immediately contradicted by the same characters ("what makes us different is that we stick together!" insert other saccharine tripe dialogue). It's like the writers realized the wrote something original and different, so then had to expel their bowels on top of their idea and crank up the minor chords on the soundtrack so mouth breathers can feel the emotion. Those are just a few turds from the toddler's diaper that is this show. Lore related nonsense in spoilers for those that care: -

Pretty sure we just saw it in episode 5. -
I went to a wedding this afternoon and evening for a high school friend with a number of people I hadn’t seen in 20 years. Later in the evening one high school classmate asked if Texas won today and I realized I hadn’t checked the score a single time. Absolute apathy from a multi-generational alumnus who used to plan my family’s entire weekend around the UT game.
