  1. Just got the dreaded text. Doesn’t appear that my friend’s girl survived. I think they found her body.
  2. Damn, that was great. She’s feisty. I like feisty.
  3. Not many companies offer flood coverage up to policy limits. It's mainly the HNW carriers such as Chubb, PURE, etc. You can sometimes buy excess flood (like an umbrella) that sits above the standard 250/100 flood policy that the NFIP offers, either thru a HNW carrier or a wholesale/surplus lines avenue. The thinking was you could have a foot of water on the bottom floor of a home but once the water recedes you can clean shit up, replace flooring and whatever was damaged. In instances like this, or New Orleans in Katrina, the whole home is destroyed. (Hurricanes are probably a bad example because then you get into arguments over whether the primary damage was the force of the wind or the rising water.) Oh, and flood insurance can be very expensive depending on where it's located in the flood maps. If you're not a primary flood zone, they're pretty cheap $500 or so annually. I won't tell anybody they don't need a flood policy any more. There ain't a place on Earth that can't flood given certain situations.
  4. They're more acquaintances at this point, one or two are former newspaper industry colleagues (the few who aren't liberal anyways). They were so giddy to be buying Tesla at "the bottom" and were proudly gonna ride it back to the top!
  5. Unless you have a separate flood policy, you're out of luck in situations like this. Depending on where the property is and official flood zone it is in, a lender can require flood insurance is bought. Typical flood policies cover up to $250K for the structure and $100K for contents. They're not designed to help all that much when the home is a total loss because it washes down the river and is smashed to pieces. You can buy supplemental flood, or some policies will cover the whole house, but those are few and far between.
  6. That’s accurate. Jane Ragsdale. https://www.dallasnews.com/news/weather/2025/07/05/beloved-texas-summer-camp-director-killed-in-hill-country-flood/
  7. The Apple News story linked a few pages back said over three trillion gallons (I think) of rain came down.
  8. Holy shit. I didn't think you could come up with a worse scenario than multiple cabins with elementary age girls washing away in a flood but this might actually be worse. Jesus.
  9. Just heard that next summer was to be Mystic's 100th Anniversary. This is true. Back in HS, my best buddy tried to drive us across a low water crossing on George Road in his little VW. Halfway through the car stalled out. We were about to go out the sunroof when he got the engine to turn over and he was able to drive the rest of the way across. The log that we saw float by was actually his front grill. We were extremely lucky to not have made the news that night. Weird connection to this event is that he went to Baylor and spent multiple summers working in the kitchen at Mystic. He met and wound up marrying the equestrian instructor from there.
  10. Heard from a colleague that authorities have recovered 13 bodies of missing Mystic campers. If true, not sure why that isn't out there with names held back but maybe that will come out in the next PC, which I think is scheduled for 2. Still hoping and praying for miracle for Lulu.
  11. Damn that would be hilarious. I know people who were gleefully dumping all kinds of money into Tesla earlier than year. They’ll take a bath on it. (These are not savvy market investors — they’re MAGA dipshits and I’m here for it, even though some of them are friends.)
  12. I don’t think Mystic will ever reopen.
  13. UT alum Ed Lavandera doing a live report now. He’s a good friend and an overall good dude. About the only thing positive I will say about CNN.
  14. No news is bad news indeed for those of us who wait.
  15. I fear the worst at this point. I can’t imagine. Praying for a miracle.
  16. Now hearing their entire cabin is gone. What that means, I don’t know. Jesus.
  17. Back to not knowing. The person I got this report from said she just heard from the aunt of one of the girl’s my friend’s daughter was with is confirmed dead. They play tennis together. Fuck me.
  18. Just got an update from another friend on this that Eloise (Lulu) has been found but is waiting to be rescued. Please let this be true.
  19. Eloise Peck is my wife’s best guy friend from college’s daughter.
  20. Just found out one of my wifes’s best friends from college’s daughter is/was one of the missing from Mystic. She might have been seen on dry land and waiting for extraction by helicopter.
  21. My folks had a lake house right below the damn many years ago. Agreed. God, I hope this is accurate.
  22. I was very good friends at UT with a girl in the family that mostly drowned that night. I think she, her husband and kids and maybe her sister survived. Everybody else drowned — both her parents, BIL and her nieces/nephews. It’s still upsetting to think about.
